Stacey's Belated Yo Yo Build Thread

Well went to attack the golf with a service, health check, and cambelt but have only done a couple of bits as think have discovered the juddering cause?

Engine cover off

Had ummed and ahhed wether to delete the egr and had previously decided to leave it as looked clean

Inside the inlet mani has obviously been cleaned previously

But today have discovered it makes a rocker cover bolt almost inaccessable and also other bits in the area harder to get to so after getting the hump have decided its gettting deleted lol

Offending bolt which can be seen once egr valve is removed

Once got the rocker cover off i inspected the chocolate cams and lifters to find a couple of them are worn and have clearly worn through the case hardened outer part of the component, its not anywhere near as bad as most have seen on the net but a couple of them are clearly fudged

Excuse the terrible photobucket editing lol

Can see on this lifter it has worn most of the top face all bar a little ring around the edge

High point of the cam on another cylinder has started to wear

With regards to all the work was going to do am now holding off doing cambelt oil and coolant change until i tackle the camshaft and lifters, i got round to changing fuel, pollen and air filter, as well as removing the relay box to tidy it up a bit ;)

Bits removed

Is there anything anyone could reconmend doing to tidy up the bay and simplify things on a pd150? Like N249 etc that rip out of the 1.8t as got loads of silicon etc knocking about?

Added the tuning box to mine. Nice easy job and extremely noticeable difference. The increase in mpg is immediately noticeable too.
Worth looking out for mate and easily justifiable. 😉

Cheers mate :)

Have already got a map lined up and would already have been done but want to get it running 100% before start tuning it

The juddering which is at low revs I suspect is down to the chocolate cam, Karl had offered one out of a pd130 head on his garage but this also has the same issue :(

Options are
1. Keep running it and not worry
2. Replace with a cheap cam kit £200 ish
3. Replace with a stronger dark side standard forged cam £350 ish
4. Upgrade with a performance cam (seen some gain 20 bhp on stage 1 map) £600+

Mmmm what to do?

Hopefully can find a cheaper performance cam lol

I seem to recall someone saying something about not being allowed to modify the diesel?
Are you living in the garage these days :)

it's a cheap daily driver mate, replace with standard as cheap as possible.

If you get the performance one, and a map, it'll only eat the clutch, and land you another £500 Bill and more work.

Save funds for the Monster this thread is all about.

I've now got my push bike fixed to save me even more money by riding to work

And to get fitter

Some wise words guys :)

Think I've found somewhere that does performance regrinds for simular price to the eBay standard grinds so may give it a go as they're not that lairy....they do one that doesn't even reconmend a map adjustment...mmmm

Although nothing has physically happened to the S3, things are in motion, I just assembled a 10 x 8 shed today which once finished the concrete base will releive the garage to become workshop status with only tools and car stuff present.....plenty of room to work around an engine stand ;)

Does anyone know if the 1.9tdi's have simular oil pick up issues to the 1.8t? If so will pull the sump off whilst I'm at it?

I don't think so.
I did mine and there was nothing wrong. It was really clean.
The pick up is also part of the pump. so you have to buy both.

Not sure I agree with you, Last 1.9tdi ATD I had was a seperate pickup.. Which was blocked!

Cheers guys will drop the sump for piece of mind.....the tdi pd camshaft is a bit more envolved than the 1.8t, thought I'd be finished by now lol

I like changing the cam on a pd, it's a satisfying job! Hope you've got new bearings and stretch bolts, the bolts like to snap if re-used lol.

Is that the same engine where they had issues with the injector loom that runs in the cam cover?

The 8v pd like staceys doesn't 'really' suffer with injector loom issues although its not unheard of.
2.0 16v PD's do suffer with broken looms.......... and injectors..........and turbo's..........

Oh ****** will have to get some bolts then :( think Chloe might be making a trip to Gsf for me

Thought they would technically be a one use bolt but the 1.8t's get reused all the time

I miss working on the 1.8t and forgot how much of an **** it is to get the 3 legged engine mount out of the cambelt side.....there was lots of swearing involved lol

The cam itself isn't as bad as I first thought but the 4 of the lifters are fudged and one worn really badly, hope it will help rectify the low down juddering when in higher gears

Then time to wack a map on it once I'm happy it's running well

People complain of the charge pipework leaking badly and am wondering if it's worth giving it a refresh with new o-rings as will be a lot cheaper than the aftermarket pipework kits

If your thinking about taking the head off it i would love to do a TDi head as its been years since i did one

Haha don't tempt me

You lot are a bad influence ;)

Might as well blank the egr while your are at it.

Did mean to buy one but forgot and now won't be here in time, it's definately on the list of to dos

Dude, it totally needs a GT42 strapped to it.

Also, can you get your S3 finished? I'm over for Christmas so a passenger ride would be nice. Sort it out already.

How long you over for dude? You back in the home land or Pompey or somewhere else?

Yeah down in good old Pompey. Planning on going for beers/dinner with Rob and Andy at some stage but yet to properly sort it out. Pop along if you're around? Be good to get a passenger ride in your machine!

Seeing as you're making the effort to travel half way round the world, I guess I could make the effort and drive 30 mins down to pompey yea, why not

Sorry for the Hijack Stace, although you've already Hi-jacked your own thread with all this tdi nonsense

I once did a 1.8 Ford TDI head that made 300 horse power's with a massive 500 NM of torque's ( top gear style )

****** hell mate that's impressive for a ford ;)

Sounds like a mental oil burner

Haha gt35 is wishful thinking and gt4x is in another league ;)

There's more chances of pigs flying than mine being done before Christmas but if you happen to be round the Essex area give me a shout

Lol suppose so....really need to get my **** in gear and stop ******* around with the derv and house decor ;)

Anyhows after more decorating got an hour on the car, due to me leaving it to late I couldn't get any bolts in time for me to have the car back Monday morning so have reused the old ones and hope they hold out :(

S3 got some attention being used to store bits lol

Weird that all the bearing shells were worn on the bottom and not the top apart from no5

Will hopefully be posting up some not very interesting s3 updates soon although may be held up financially as other half has just been told she's being let go by end of the month :(

Edit: forgot to add a big thanks to the usual vag parts supplier (jasons) who has supplied a lot of the parts as usual and put up with my constant enquiring :)

Stacey.

on your s3 what condition was your cylinder head in? Was it fully rebuilt?

Head was ported, polished, exhaust ports matched to TSR manifold, ferrea valves and spring kit fitted, valves were lapped in and spent a day doing it and head was then pressure tested after all the work.

The head was sent to Stacey to fit lifters and cams

I have offered to check the head over for free as i stand by my work and if theres a problem i will fix it

Im not doubting your work in any shape or form Andrew, I was more interested in what was fitted and whether the additional upgrades to the cams, valves etc has caused a side effect with regards engine noise.. I have a theory but it needs proving..

also Staceys cams need to be properly timed rather than just replaced, I feel there is somethig going on there. With the added mechanical noise from the hardware, may explain a few things
