Hi all,

I am looking at getting some window tints added to my A3 Sport 2007. My main reason is for sun protection for the kids in the back as I hate the silly window blinds that never quite work and look awful! But of course the secondary reason is that I think they finish off the sportback nicely.

Does anyone know if the factory Tint/Protection has any special quality i.e. solar protection or UV protection etc...? You know the standard sort of green ish tint I suppose it is?

I am looking at using Dappa Tints Dapaa Tints - Mobile Window Tinting Specialists | Window Tinting Leeds - Dapaa Tints - Mobile Window Tinting Specialists

The workshop is not far from me. They offer a range of products but I am not sure what to go for in conjunction with the factory glass. Not going for blackout or anything too harsh either.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Regards,

Richard

Hi,

Never heard of them before. I like the idea actually, but what are they like to live with? Do they fall out easily if they get pressed by the kids? How do they look up close?

I suppose the advantage over tints is that they stay up and can be removed, but with tints they are simply there and require no interaction as such.

Something to ponder....

Mine stay in 24/7 You can see through them really well, they are not solid, as the mesh is perforated. When clipped in they will stay in place with the window down and driving.Unlike tints you will still have the protection as they are still in place.
Here they are on my old car

I see.

Did you overcome the falling off problem you described in your thread?

Do you have any close up pics of inside and out on your A3?

They are sending additional clips to secure it in place at the bottom. Not sure if all A3's rear windows go fully into the door, or if some stay out of the door a bit? Can get more pics if you like

Some more pics

Cheers mate - gives me a good idea about the look of them now.

I just need to weigh up the options. Tints have been quoted £129-£159 and those blinds are £83 posted by the looks of it so not a massive ammount in it I suppose.

No problem bearing in mind when the window is down so are the tints.

This is true, but to be honest I don't tend to put the rear windows down when the kids are in the car.

My 5 year old does she loves the wind through her hair, not at motorway speeds though lol

Anyone have any thoughts on my original question please?

I got light smoke tints on the back of my car... standing further back they give the impression that they are more tinted than they actually are.... great for sun protection and like the overall increase of the look of the car... not too sure about uv protection, but i'd imagine it does have some qualities as glare is vastly reduced in the back...

A pic of my car the day they were done

Thanks, and nice motor!

How much did the tints cost you?

Thanks... I got mine done for £80.. but that was a friend of a friend.. and it'll be slightly more expensive on a sportback due to more windows, but not by much.. :)

I have been quoted £129 as best price so far. About 1.5 hours to fit.

I got medium tints in my rear. I think they look nice, not completly black that you can't see in. Cost me £70 to get them done

Additional clips have come and fitted, they are not going to fall out now

if you go for tints, try a company which does it in a dust free environment, so ideally not mobile tinting services.

Cheers bud. Yeah I thought that might be sensible. Dappa Tints whom I am looking at do both, but as the workshop is not far I would take it in.

Ended up getting home late and it was nearly dark and the car was covered in water. They look completely black in this case. Will try again this evening!

Hmm insurance want £26 extra till August for tints. Interesting. The window blinds are growing on me though as a good option and safety fetaure for the kids.

LEE69 - I assume you didn't need to delcare the blinds as they can be removed?

Could you do me a massive favour and take a couple of pics of your car as general shots as if you are just looking at it? I just want to see the genreal effect rather than the close ups you sent before. Thanks again!

To answer the original question - I am 99% sure the OEM tint filters out UV (although not glare) - one reason I think that is that the reactor lenses in my specs don't work inside the car at all, even in very bright sunlight (pah!). Apparently they are triggered by UV.

Cracking thanks.

What is the visabilty like from the inside out? My little boy loves shouting at trucks and busses as they pass!

Liking the look of them, might get a set for myself, once Chrimbo is out of the way.

Visibility isn't hindered as they are a perforated mesh fabric, perfect for seeing through.

Also the window can be lowered with them in-situ.

That is good to hear as I have just ordered a set! :icon_thumright:

Hopefully I won't need any extra clips etc... I did ask and the seller said the kit should be correct for my car.

Yeah i think they may have added them after i got in touch with them.

The mesh nets look quite good and doesn't darken the rear windows as much as most rear tints do, which to me look ridiculous as the car looks like a van. If the law allowed front side windows to be tinted then I can see the appeal of tinting, but as only the back is tinted it looks rubbish to me!
