My A4 has displayed some several random warning lights. The other day is was a red symbol of an oil can, yet the oil level is perfect. It didn't stay on long.

Today (during a heavy rain period) my wife had the chime and Brake warning symbol and an orange? Triangle flash up for a minute then go off.

There was another last week but due to negotiating a roundabout I didn't get chance to view the symbol clearly before it went out.

What would cause these random things?

The brake pads and brake fluid are all fine....

Cheers,

Dan

common denominator is the dis system and clocks
but its an unusual failure for them to go
i would make sure first that the warnings youve had are not in fact genuine ...especially the red engine oil warning light

ESP light on the roundabout? Sounds plausible.

Brake warning might be down to the pads?

Sounds like something to do with wheels... well it doesn't but had the same symptoms on mine after putting some dodgy one's on, came on and off intermittently for a couple days then went away.

As you state heavy rain and going round a roundabout, perhaps you have water in the plenum chamber that's sloshing around???

Oil levels are fine, as it's new to me is the vehicle, I always keep a close eye on fluid levels for the first month or so, then check every 3/4 months.

Pads are fine all round. Fronts are new and rear are about 50% worn. ESP is plausible but it was dry and I wasn't accelerating hard at all, no feeling of any wheel slip when setting off.

Dodgy wheels? It has the standard '5 spoke' alloys on at the moment. Did you fit aftermarket/copies?

No, the rain was only when the wife was driving, the roundabout was a dry day. The only time in the rain was with the wife driving.

I'm wondering if maybe the ECU box or somewhere else is letting water in? Will have a look at the ECU box over the weekend. The carpets feel dry and we don't have any inside condensation issues to suggest damp inside but I could still be wrong.

Is there any 'common' water ingress on the B6's?

Cheers,

Dan

just because your oil level is ok dont rule it out!

It could be a clogged strainer like the 1.8T suffers and could have been low oil pressure!

The pad light is orange I think, they can still give trouble if the wire is damaged or something. Low fluid level is a red light if I remember correctly.

They tend to leak water around the ecu seal if it's damaged or disturbed, and if the drain plugs under the battery get blocked the plenum chamber will drip through on the passenger side.

yellow banner is low fluid ... red banner is oil pressure , something you most certainly cant check with a dipstick

Does the 2.5 suffer with clogged strainers? It has FSH. I'm getting the timing belts done next month, will get them to service the car and check the strainer. It only happened once and has not done it since. Covered 200 miles since the light flashed up.

It was definitely a red light that flashed up. Will check the ecu box and drain below the battery tomorrow.

Was the red symbol, not yellow. Only came on for a second or two, then straight out. It happened as I put my foot down in second gear up a slight incline?

An update, last night I popped to the local and had the car facing downhill on a steep gradient. Jumped back into the car after an hour, started it and left it idling whilst putting my belt on (foot on brake pedal, handbrake on) and I heard the 'beep', looked at the dash and my ABS, Traction control light was lit up on dash, and BRAKE! in RED on the DIS flashing.

I didn't drive/move it. Pumped brake pedal a few times and no difference in feel.

Turned off and restarted the car, no faults returned. Tried to replicate it today at work, but no joy. However, no rain since it did last night, however, it was raining before I went to the local!

So i'm leaning more and more to water ingress somewhere playing havoc?

I have ordered a licence for VCDS Lite......should get my email back on Monday hopefully so I can scan the car properly. My EOBD tool scanned it but couldn't make out any of the faults, but one was ABS ecu memory error or something? Will wait for vcds to confirm.

Ok, I've done another scan with vcds-lite (UNREGISTERED I might add) and got these: (I did Engine, Brakes and Instrument modules)

It is possible that the ABS had been unplugged and car started at some point and codes not cleared? I have cleared all of the codes, and we are going out for tea so will scan car again tomorrow to see what/if has returned.

I'm beginning to think I've bought a Lemon! :-(

best thing to do is see if anyone close to you who has a full version can scan the car for you

look on the vcds map on here

any engine can suffer with it if the strainer is blocked!

one thing that does stand out to me is the Internal Control Module Memory Error fault you get this sometimes with a duff battery which causes the brake warning to come on while cranking

not sure why yours would do it after running though might just be a coincidence

Got my VCDS registered just now. My activation came through email at 5pm. Will scan tomorrow.

I do have my reservations about the condition of the battery on the car. It does't struggle to start but I've noticed the voltage is never brilliant on it unless the car is running.
