A4 2.0 TDI DPF cleaner??

Hi just had my 2009 2.0 TDI in at a halfords autocentre for a air con recharge and got them to do a diagnostics check while it was in. Had the DPF sign come on a while a go, it went into limp mode for a bit. Next day went for a blast round motorway symbol went off but now the emmisions light has stayed on since. Only fault said DPF Blocked. I mentioned a possible sensor fault cos ive heard that being common, but he seemed to rule that out.

He said the can take the DPF off the car and leave it in some kind of solution overnight to help clean the DPF then force a regen the next day for £180. I've had it in a few times for little bits an he's normally pretty good so im happy enough that hes not bull****ting me. Anyone had this done??

I am tempted to jus get it removed and remapped but still got a warranty from when i got the car (DPF not covered) so didnt fancy affecting that. Could do without spending the £500 for removal/remap too.
Jus wondered if anyone has had any experience with DPF cleaner?? I know you can get these ones for £20 but cant see that doing much.

Thanks for that! Does anybody know that if the emissions light is on due to dpf being blocked this can stop a regen? Doesn't sound right to me but heard it somewhere?
 
yes if its over 40g full then a forced regen while driving is needed . seen one over 200 percent full
 
I take it that has to be done via computer/vag at a garage then? Can they usually be unblocked via this method then? Wondering wether to take it back in to same place where they said to take off dpf and clean then do a regen or maybe find a audi vw specialist
 
anyone with vcds can do this for you , a garage or a member of the forum .
some can be regenerated fine but others require a new dpf ,by the time you have done it will be cheaper to get the dpf removed and deleted from the map.but that is your choice the fault usually returns in the future
 
Thanks for info, i am tempted to get it removed but hear it could be made part of MOT test at any time. I know its not a requirement at min. Should of got a petrol!!
 
To remove the DPF is quite labour intensive ,which company gave you that quote?

A halfords autocentre believe it or not! I spoke to vw audi specialist and they said £300 minimum. Got it in on Saturday so hopefully all will be well!

No that's just to get took off cleaned and put back. I don't fancy it getting took off for it to then become compulsory on MOT. That's all that's putting me off. I wouldn't mind getting it remapped anyway.

Thanks for that that will bear it in mind. U know much bout the whole dpf delete and how likely will be enforced on MOT?
 
I would also love to get my DPF removed from my 3.0 tdi but I am also worried about the rumours that it may become compulsory on the MOT. Does anyone have any info on this?
 
I know I may be biased as we do this a lot, but there is no plan at all to have it in the MOT. It has never ever been officially mentioned - just scaremongering.

Ah that's good to hear. It's thrown around so much these days I just assumed that someone had heard it from an official source
 
Getting my DPF removed was the best thing I've ever done, loads more torque and more miles to the gallon.
The £800 I invested has almost paid off with the miles I do.

Give Nv motorsport a call ,their service and understanding is second to none. I left my car there with piece of mind and they kept me informed through out the whole process. They were slightly pricey then most but there quality does show .There's so many company's out there who haven't got a clue what they are talking about, do your research and find the most qualified and experianced people.
 
Rather than starting yet another thread about DPFs I thought I'd tack onto this one to try and find some advice...

Last week I had an emission control warning light appear (08 A4 B7 2.0tdi 170 quattro avant) that was diagnosed at the local garage as an intermittent EGR valve problem and (having had experience with that last year) I thought it may be clagged up so bought some fuel treatment in the hope it would just flush it out. Unfortunately this just created more problems as a few days later the DPF light also came on so I drove it hot to try and eliminate it but it kept coming back on after a few minutes into a new journey - and then it finally went into limp mode with flashing coil light. So I first checked the EGR and discovered that the gear mechanism had sheared - replaced with new, disconnected battery hoping it would reset, but it still had all 3 warning lights on when switched back on so took it to my local garage for a diagnostic. They said the EGR fault has gone, but there is a DPF fault (they weren't specific) that will not reset but it sounds like the DPF could be knackered. It's booked in for Monday with a view to 'have a look' but all the warning lights are still on and it's in limp mode.

Ideally I want the DPF removed. I doubt my local garage will do it so:

1. Can anyone recommend a DPF remover and remap in the South East, ideally Kent/East Sussex border area?

2. Can I/should I drive the car in limp mode. It's ok but a bit scary up hills but am I doing any damage?

3. Has there been an update on MOTs since the last post above (ie will it fail if I get it removed - prob not but worth asking)?

Hi Chris,

the car can be driven in limp mode, no damage will occur although if it is really blocked then eventually the car will simply not run.

No MOT update :)

I would remove EGR as well as DPF, we insist on doing both now as they are both problematic. Maybe a day trip to Stockport is in order. I honestly wouldn't bother with your local garage, they aren't going to solve your problems.

Cheers Rick. Shame you're not nearer - I'd probably get arrested if I try and drive it to Stockport in limp mode!

Anyone know if limp mode can be disabled despite all these warning lights flashing? My local garage didn't have any luck but then they didn't seem too confident about what they were seeing on the diagnostic.
 
One thing to point out is with the DPF removed, the car will smoke a bit more. This shouldn't be excessive but without the DPF to catch all the soot etc, its got to go somewhere. Personally I haven't had mine removed purely for this reason, I hate seeing a nice car sitting at the lights then disappearing in a cloud of smoke when the lights change!
 
Yes, all that "scaremongering" seems to have been based on fact! Glad I didn't go to the expense of having a DPF removed after all.
