Anyone using this? As a £90 extra seems a good addition, if like me, you have a wife who tends to stall cars after stopping on hills!

I have got this with my S-Tronic. It's fantastic. It's much better then the old Hill Hold option, which stops you rolling back for about 3 seconds to give you chance to get the biting point.
With Hold Assist, when you come to a stop, a green P icon comes on the dash to indicate the system is active. Then you can take your foot off the brake for as long as you need to, as if the handbrake was applied. When you are ready to drive away, just do so as if you were on the flat. It's well worth the £90

Blimy a £90 piece of gold. My wife will be so excited, or I will when she drives back from a late night meal with boozy friends and I don't have to worry on hills.
Seeing where you come from you don't know my friend's the Slacks; as in coaches? I went to Woodland School at the top of Matlock Bank ... so that shows my age!!

I do know Slacks Coaches yes. I don't know them personally, but their depot is based up on the top of Matlock Bank, on Lumsdale near Highfields school. It's not far from me
Having driven a saloon with just the electromechanical handbrake I'd be comfortable just having that seeing as it only involves putting it on and then it is auto released when pulling away...

I would say for the sake of £90 it's worth adding, and if you don't like it turn it off. I find it such a useful piece of kit, pull up to a set of lights the car stops, foot off the brake, relax. Lights turn green foot on the throttle and off we go, simples!
If that doesn't appeal then the first time you get to some stop start traffic on a long journey you will suddenly realise why you ordered it
Have not touched the handbrake since I turned hold assist on. Like I say though if you don't like it just turn it off, the car will remember if it was switched on or off every time you start it.
Hi, as I stated in another thread I have got this already as a standard fitment in my Focus, my partners Fiesta also has this as standard too, however both cars have a mechanical handbrake which doesn't release automatically, thus I do not need an explanation on how it works. However having tried the handbrake on the A3 saloon, and seeing how well that works, I cannot see the point of spending £90 because I am too lazy to lift one finger. Thus, for me, I would chose to spend the money on something else useful.

That's fine, just trying to explain some of the advantages. I guess it's like a dishwasher, once you have had one you would never be without it
and that's why they are options, some people will like them others not so fussed.The way I see it if the technology is available why not let it work for you

No problem and I appreciate you taking the trouble to explain it. Coming from the car I have I can see some duplication in the systems that Audi have created. However it is to do with personal preference...

Having a manual A4 at the moment I hate the fact that the hand break auto disengages! I will be sat on a slight hill and pull the hand break on and the clutch is to the floor. While I'm sat there I just let the clutch up a couple of centimeters and the hand break goes off and I'm not really ready to set off, and I roll back a bit.

I hired a MK7 golf when in Spain this had the hold assist, found it very good when used as mentioned above when the car is stopped the handbrake is applies and then drive off without touching anything. When you stop the car and switch it off the handbrake is automatically applied.
Knowing how good it is I would have spec'ed it for my A3 and Q5

The only possible problem I can think of is getting mixed up driving an 'ordinary' car and forgetting it has no hill assist. Could be 'embarrassing' rolling back when stopping on a hill.
Other than that it seems a win, win situation at £90. Will be phoning my dealer tomorrow to try and add this.
We have the equivalent of Hold Assist on our Golf Mk7 SE (where it comes as standard with the electronic handbrake). It's absolutely fabulous. When you come to a stop the hold assist engages and stops the auto from creeping forward. The slightest pressure on the accelerator releases it and off you go.
Btw - Hold Assist does not apply the handbrake. It seems to work by increasing the hydraulic pressure in the brake system. When the electronic handbrake applies itself you can hear the motor physically applying the handbrake.

Do you still have to apply the hand break when turning off the engine and parking then?
Thanks. Mine is a manual gear box though but no difference I would presume. I never put my hand break on when stopping in my other car which is auto.
