A3 real fuel consumption

Is the screenwash really empty, or is is just registering as empty because the car is on its side? 
I've recently changed from a 2.0tdi (8P) to a 1.6tdi (8v) and find it VERY noisy compared to the 2.0. It definately cannot be described as 'petrol like' in my experience to date. I'm also seeing only low 50s mpg after the first 500 miles. My previous 2.0 averaged about 55mpg over 3 years and 70k mostly motorway miles. I decided to go to the 1.6 as I was hoping to achieve around 60mpg.

Mmmmm, interesting figures. I have ordered a 1.6tdi, expecting it in August., am disappointed the mpg figure is not close to the quoted figure of 74, but that's probably true for all quoted figures.
Forgive me for my ignorance, but is the 1.6dti (8v) different from the previous versions?
i have also read somewhere that the production of the new 1.6TDI Sportback does not start until May 2013, but the evidence on this forum suggests otherwise, am I missing something?

Mine was exactly the same, but I've now got 2500 miles on it and it's up to low 60's / high 50's - I've even seen 70mpg on a run when I was taking it easy!

My car has done 1700 miles, running at 80 MPH for 150 miles on dual carriageways, towns and rural roads I recorded 48MPG which is good don't really expect anything better but if it happens it will be a bonus. However at lower speeds rural 40-55 MPH the figure is a lot higher.
I prefer the power and the sport driving of the car rather than MPG.

I have almost 2500 miles on my A3 now and I've been recording the fuel consumption in 1000 mile blocks. I do a mixed bag of driving and like to have a blast quite often....
1st 1000 miles: 47.8mpg
2nd 1000 miles: 49.4mpg
Overall I'm pretty happy and I think it'll end up averaging mid 50's with a few more miles on the clock. I've mostly had the engine set on dynamic mode.

That's pretty similar to what I get 1000 miles in. Left mine in Auto mode though as I just haven't had the time to play with it.

Well i don't have a 8V, but I've had 3.5 years with the 1.6TDI in a Mk 6 Golf and at the wekend swapped it for a MY12 8P with the same engine. Here's my findings..
I spec'd sports suspension and 17" wheels from the factory - these were ridiculously heavy, at least 50% heavier than my winter steel wheel set (see later)
I started with Bridgestone RE050 tyres (hopeless in even half an inch of snow), then swapped to Falken ZE-912 and latterly to Pirelli P7 Contuarto - I saw no improvement in mpg using any of these tyres
My winter wheel set are 15" steelies with 195/65/15 Nokian W+ tyres - I used these over three winters and over 25k miles - thery were brillinat for ride comfort, noise and grip, but best of all I got at least 5mpg extra from these. Whether it was the narrow tyres (less drag), the considerable reduction in wheel weight (less torque required) or the compound I can't say but every winter in like for like driving I saw an improvement
You can get good mpg from the 1.6 engine, but you must keep to 50-52mph on A roads and 62-64mph on dual carriageways and M-ways. Hardly very exciting ! If you want to drive at 75mph on the M-way then expect 48-50mpg, at 80mph you'll be more likely to see 45-46mpg. Drop to 62mpg and you'll get 60-62mpg.
I have a 27 mile commute, which is 3 miles of 50mph d/c'way, 22 miles of 70mph d/c'way and 2 miles urban 30mph. On my summer wheel set I could get 62-63mpg by keeping to 62mph in the 70 and 50mph in the 50 zone. On winter tyres that would be 67-69mpg dependent upon the traffic. The best I did for a south to north wales A road trip (ca 110 miles) was 76mpg, keeping to 52mph on cruise for the majority of the journey (sometimes due to traffic, other times for economy). I did that trip regularly and could repeatedly get over 70mpg on the winter tyres, but 64-65mpg on the summers.
So the 1.6TDI can be economical but you have to try hard - alternative tyres may help the cause a little but there's not a huge difference if you stick to summer performance tyres in Sport/S-line sizes I'm afraid.
For reference, first commute in the 8P3 SB this morning - 62mpg on 225/45/17 Bridgestome Turanza ER300 tyres (very much in line with my last 3.5years in the similarly equipped Golf).
you should run winter tyres at 2psi higher thant he equivalent size for sumemr tyres - the extra grip of winter tyres comes fromt he tread design and compund. Running lower pressures causes additional flex and strain on the tyre sidewall and carcass, gives lower grip (as the centre line of the tyre contracts) and higher mpg as a result.

I have moved from 2.0 06 diesel to 1.4 tfsi 6sp manual and just done my first 200 miles of normal driving in economy mode and was rather suprised to return 47.6 mpg 
about the same as my old diesel. However in this mode there is a small amount of lag when accelerating, moving to auto mode the lag is not present & it will be interesting to see which way the mpg goes in this mode

The about the same as I get from my 2012 2.0TDi-170 Sportback s-tronic in normal everyday driving. It goes up to around the 50 mark when I do long drives to Germany at a constant 80-90mph.
8V 1.4TFSI S-tronic with roughly 1100 miles on the clock, overall average (2) from the start is 40.9mpg. Most of that is on auto mode, but last couple days I've been using efficiency. Of course there is some dynamic mixed in there too, but not too much yet. This is with 18" wheels and tire pressures dead on factory specs, although they were slightly off initially (two were couple psi low) for the first 500 miles or so. I believe it's still going up, especially since switching to efficiency, will find out next week on a 400 mile return trip.
My daily commute is mixed, some city but mostly motorway (few full stops). My gut feeling is 45mpg is an achievable daily average, maybe more as the engine/gearbox/chassis runs in. I am already getting better mpg than my previous Golf Mk6 1.4TSI, but that was 160ps (I do miss that engine).

Just purchase a S3 Sline as a company car expecting the 60+mpg. As it stands I am only getting around 45mpg with a fuel range of max 450miles when filled up. Admittedly I have done only just over 1,000miles but 400 of them were content motorway drive. Still not happy with its economy..
An S3 with 60+mpg???? No chance... even the 2.0TDIs struggle to do that on average.
I would say 45mpg is excellent for the S3.
Edit: Although you say S3 S-line, and I suspect you actually mean A3 S-line? In which case it will all depend what engine you have.

Apologies yes A3 S-line new version (2.0 TDI 150PS). Unfortunately I was swayed by the published figures of over 60mpg for a combined consumptions..
Manufacturer figures are never accurate unfortunately - on any car. The standard EU tests that produce the figures are hopelessly unrepresentative of real life driving.
Accept that although we shouldnât but my previous was a standard 1.9 TDI Golf with the same fuel capacity but had a range of some 525miles and averaged 55mgp or better⦠no matter how it was driven.
If it's a brand new diesel you'll have to let it run in for quite a while - the economy (and performance) should improve with time.

my previous car 2.2 ltr. Honda civic diesel (2006 ish) got me a total average of 54 Mpg over the first 60,000 miles with mixed driving and wasn't driving like a granny, so you would expect at least mid 50's on a new 2 ltr diesel Audi even if compared to there 'official' figures it was lower, so can understand your disappointment of your MPG. Just hope it improves as the car runs in, Honda started at high 40's mpg when new.
Had my 1.6tdi Sline a while now, has about 6000 on the clock. Mainly used on a 35 mile motorway trip, constant 70mph and struggle to get over 58mpg. Had on a few occasions low 60's.
My car now has 2200 miles on the clock and has averaged about 49mpg. I am regularly seeing 55-60mpg on decent trips on mixed roads, I am over the moon with the consumption, and expect it to keep on improving.

I've got an A3 2.0 TDI, and after over 7500 miles I can now get between 57 and 63mpg on a steady motorway run at 70mph. Mixed driving, mainly urban, on my route to work is 45mpg ish.
It has definitely improved since I first got her, and I'm very happy with the economy given the adequate power (more would be nice, but actually on a back road when you want to give it some 150bhp with plenty of torque and lots of grip) and great handling.

No complaints from me with the handling and it has enough power although more would be better....
Just back from a few days in France on business and clocked up just under 400 miles, with around 80 - 90% at motorway speeds on the legal limit, and with drive selct on auto or dynamic.
Was cruising according to the speedo aroud 75mph in the UK and 84mph in France, did not push it to much as still under 1000 miles in total and returned a fraction over 53mpg, which is pretty impressive especially as I bought for performance rather than economy.
btw, what a pleasure to drive and enjoyed every minute of it even on the way home after an 8 hour meeting, the 5 hour journey passed in no time at all.

1.6 TDI SE Sportback
After 19 days, I have done 800 miles and the average mpg is 58. On longer trips of 150 miles, mostly motorway I achieved 65mpg.
Early days yet, and driving fairly conservatively, so havn't really opened up the engine to the max yet.

2.0 TDI S line
I have done around 250 miles so far and averaging 48mpg.
I am already getting 50-55MPG on my daily commute (30 miles mix of motorway and town traffic) as well so hoping it will only get better.
One thing i did notice was that when i completely filled the tank to absolute max the trip computer said the range was 385 miles - that seems wrong to me and think i will probably get 500 plus miles out a tank. Not sure how it works this figure of 385 out but not really paying too much attention to it until it says im empty.
