I bought a 1.2 Clio as a run about but it was so annoying to drive I got rid after about a month.

My advise is atleast buy something reasonably pokey cos there's nothing more irritating than having to sit behind some plank cos you ain't got the power to overtake.

Glad I only have a 45 round trip each day so can still sort of justify using my standard s3 and keep bumble for when I feel the need for speed :)

Cheers for reply's guys, do understand that is only a 0-5v input at the end of the day, all it is that i knew james lcr was displaying relevent figures so wasn't sure if was something you had done?

Lmfao at stacking shelves 45 miles away :D

Its one of sainsburys largest automated warehouses in the UK and will be working as an electrical/multiskilled engineer, suprisingly is a lovely package with prospects....and of coarse >50% increase in basic income was an incentive to travel ;)

Yeah that was also my thoughts as would probably find it soul destroying if not

My criteria is asking a lot really for the money but like said am open to suggestions

It needs to be
Econimal (prob a diesel)
Be able to have kids in the back on occasions otherwise was considering a van
Pretty reliable
Little poke not gutless (prob will get mapped and played with a little)

Preferably / a bonus if included
VAG
Reasonably comfortable for long drives
Cruise control
Hands free

All for around £1000-1500 could possibly stretch to 2000 for the right car, I will be borrowing tge money and may upgrade at a later date once settled?

A lot to ask I know but keep ending up looking at a mk4 gt tdi?

VAG stuff is expensive as a runabout.
For £1500 you'll get an absolutely mint condition low miles vectra or mondeo diesel. Thats where my money would be going.

If your anything like me, it also means you won't be inclined to change bits on it if its a bit more boring

yep - some sprinkle magic mapping dust on it

james' isnt like that now btw

Maybe look at bora's or some thing with a skoda badge if you would prefer to stay vag and can't find a mk4.

I have a soft spot for the skoda yeti (it's just a pity they aren't cheap) as one of my requirements where I live is it to be 4x4 even if its haldex as it still does the job.

Cheers for the replys guys, got to admit i am pretty hooked of VAG's now, also thought the mk4 platform (or vags from that era) was possibly a good idea as know it reasonably well now and have half a garage full of spares including wheels and tyres

I have been doing some research mainly on golfs and on the 130 and 150 bhp engines and have come to the decision the internet is a dangerous thing as quickly found myself on forums drifting towards how each respond with a remap and dare say it hybrids did pop up lol

Cheers Bill when next got some time i will just measure the ID of both housings and work out the CSA % difference to enter in the liquid adaptions section :)

You are one funny fecker karlos...i didnt have a clue what you meant until i googled it and nearly feel of my chair laughing, good idea mate only downside is i think the 90 miles will take a long time ;)

Good shout Jo and Iain more searching will now comence

Fancy doing that on a TDI....do you do an offer of buy 2 maps get third free lol ;)

My run about( mainly as the TT spends more time off than on the road) is a 2001 gt tdi 115bhp mk4 golf.. Mapped to 145bhp its brilliant.. 55mpg.. And pulls like a train.. Probably never sell it as its cheap to run and just goes...

Cheers for replys as always guys....but something more important to disscuss!

I know only possess third gear.....another gearbox needed as is selector fork gone

Misses is going to ****ing kill me :(

Just read the while thread,!

I HAVE recently bought a jabba powered a3. 400 hp apparently.

If going to bills on friday for a turbo rebuild and a few other bits. There great motors.

I also have a good car for you. A Audi A4 tri v6 Quattro avant. My dads old car 1800

Sorry to hear. Hope you can get it sorted without getting into too much trouble from the mrs...

I'd be slipping the clutch until I'm past the end of the road Stacey, then parking it up and riding your push bike to work so she doesn't find out

In all seriousness though, properly **** luck :(

Is there any easy fix / solution to the selector issue? or do you just replace the lot and hope it doesn't happen again?

**** man. That's not good.

Like the others said, can you not fix the fork?

If it makes you feel any better, My 4 speed auto box is now a 3 speed auto box.

Replacing the rivets with nut and bolts (and a load of loctite) seems to be the solution I hear of. There's also this:
Steel Shift Fork Transmission Upgrade / 6 Speed (02M / 02Q)
Which I might look into when mine's rebuilt with the Wavetrac diff

Cheers guys

8 currently still have my old box in the corner of the garage that had planned to refurb at leisure with bearings, syncros, crown wheel rivets and of coarse the slector fork

I have seen it done on thread previously where they welded high tensile bolts in place of the rivets and grind the heads off, which was my plan as is cheap and stronger than the oem solution

Unfortunately the current plan I think is to retire the s3 for the winter, which will allow me to sort out plenty of issues the car has and come back stronger than ever with sonething that has had more care and tine spent in areas, rather than how it is with some areas of it felt a bit rushed in need of it being completed before the house commitment

Also it all hangs on whether the car survives the next few days as some of the comments recieved have included....

It wont be there when you get home

Im going to burn it/take a baseball bat to it

Its being sold on ebay for a £1 whilst your at work

Needless to say I think she has had well and truly enough of the power hungry S3 abusing addiction!

Also forgot to add besides the problems I have been loving the car as had a few "plays" last night and embarrassed a couple of cars :racer:

Even with the ad08s on and lovely dry tarmac managed to get a nice couple of 4 wheel drifts going with the car squiming side to side out of a couole of round abouts :)

Dude if she does list it, fire me over the link, ta ;)

Like your thinking though, do it right in one hit. I've been mega slow with mine trying to work out the best way of doing things (usually by just copying you).

Sounds like it is/was running awesome though up until the box issue :) Nice one. I'm jealous.

Gutted mate :( but join the club as I lost 1st and 2nd about 2 weeks ago so feel your pain!

Hopefully mine will be back on the road next week after sourcing a second hand low mileage gearbox and getting a new clutch and DMF fitted at the same time as it seems rude not to lol.

Tell me about it....in one week I had the gearbox go, phone screen crack, router die, one of my fish tank pumps and there was 2 more things which can't remember now

Am getting some real good luck in some aspects of life but swear have a curse on me in others lol

That's a bummer mate.
I did loose 1st and 2nd 4 years ago, i replaced the rivet with unbrako bolt and welded in place, still going strong.

That's the current plan but won't be rushing to do it at the mo as my time has been diverted to house decor duties ;-)

Little update

The car has now been sorned and am considering pulling the engine out and checking it over

The car had been consuming more than average amount of oil and wonder if it could be what is effecting the timing advance?

Hadn't noticed any tell tale signs of oil being lost or burnt until the last night I was driving it and it seemed to be pretty smoky on boost which hadn't noticed at all prior? It was only noticed when was pulling away from a Vxr and could see it in the light from the headlights?

On another note I have managed to pick up a mk4 golf gt tdi150 for a steal as a run around

It all seems well apart from the odd little fault (to be expected for the price I got it) although engine and braking systems have got no fault codes

The main concern at the moment is you get quite a bit of vibration when it's really loaded up, I've only noticed it if you put your foot down in a high gear on a motorway?

Not sure if it's a common thing but thoughts are DMF, engine mounts or maybe some form of misfire but not got fault codes and not to clued up on dirty dervs

Also pretty sure got a stage 1 map already sorted for it ;-)

Really could do with dropping at the back a bit but have had to swear I will not modify this car unless something breaks and aftermarket bits are cheaper :)
