My car has HID's in both main and dipped beam, and despite the stories to the contrary passed the MoT today. Has anyone ever had any problems getting through with HID's?

(Assuming no headlight washers and self levelling rear suspension fitted).

I had them in my old corsa and never had any bother.. i think it depends on who does the test..

My tester made a joke about them, but passed me no problems. They were perfectly aligned too, but I did try manaully align them when fitting, so must have got it right.

No problem here, but I don't take the **** with 8000K+

Can't comment myself as took them out and put my originals back in for the MOT, may try it next year

THe MOT test manual is very clear - it is NOT necessary to have headlight washers or self-levelling with HIDS to pass the MOT, BUT if they are fitted they must work.

So if you have HIDs and no washers or levelling, then all you need to pass the MOT is to have the headlights correctly aligned.

My Citroen C1 has 55W Bi-Xenon HIDs that I fitted myself and it passed the MOT with no comment on the headlights.

Mine passed no problem at the beginning of this month. Hids were supplied by Tups on here through a group buy. The tester said as long as the alignment and beam pattern was ok he had no issues with them.

Rules are one thing, interpretation is another. This thread never got a definitive answer:

The definitive answer is in the document issued by VOSA  - if the tester doesn't follow that then you have grounds to appeal, and that clearly says that washers & self-levelling headlights must work IF they are fitted but do NOT have to be fitted (to pass the MOT).

BTW in your first post in this thread you say "self levelling rear suspension" - it's not about self-levelling SUSPENSION it's about whether self-levelling HEADLIGHTS are fitted, which is a completely different system (my B7 RS4 has self-levelling Bi-Xenon headlights but does not have self-levelling rear suspension).

Mine also has aftermarket HIDS fitted with no washers/levelling system fitted and passed MOT yesterday with no problems!

The washing and self-levelling systems are set by ECE Regulations which only applies to new vehicles sold in the EU.

In the US however, it is illegal to run HIDs without these items fitted new or used cars (non FMVSS 108 conformation which is not street legal).

My best friend is an MOT tester and mechanic and has looked up the rules because so many cars have HIDs retrofitted these days. He now knows the rules and checks for brightness and adjustment only.

Yep, never had an issue with my HIDs and MOTs

Can anyone recommend a kit that won't make my abs go mental and make my dash look like a Xmas tree
