Any one any experience of removing this ? So far i think the door panel has to come off and obviously plastic triangle cover but not sure what else is involved to disconnect and reconnect if more needs to be removed or less:S.

found out the door cards where a pain in the **** could get off, stepped back and when to plan 2 swapping everything over bar frame and cables...success. Hardest part was disassembling new wing mirror and glass with the clips and unscrewing the motor was **** easy.

So were you fitting the mirror adjustment motor, or the mirror folding motor?

mirror adjustment motor the clip to remove the cable to power it and stuff was a f**ker delicate like would snap easily, i wish it came with auto folding mirrors as then people wouldnt drive into it parked :(.

I did a mod on my previous car to fit folding mirrors; not automatic, but habitual, and it was great to be happy the mirrors were out of the way whenever I parked.
I see it is an option on mine, so I shall have to start working through to get the bits in hand. Trouble is, local scrappies have only just caught up with 2001 vehicles, so another four years to wait!

auto folding mirrors are the dogs balls, friend of mine has them and said is yours not like this so went and looked at the adjustement mirror dial on drivers side which gives it away are auto folding you are able to rotate the dial to 6pm where as manual only allows 9pm and 3pm.
Did you mod allow you to fold them using the drivers mirror adjustment dial i take it ?

try ebay for parts pretty good for some things but do get dodgy characters, living in northern ireland and breakers have not a good selection but i feel your pain with wanting a local drive than driving half way up the countryside.

I retrofitted the mod to a Renault Laguna; needed switch, harness in the driver's door, and fitting the motors and wiring to the wing mirrors thems selves.
Only consumable was the star washer in the mirror, that held the moving body onto the stationary shaft.
Fortunately, car was pre-CAN-bus, and at the time I bought it, my local scrappie went from zero Lagunas to a fairly constant flow.

I'd like to do the same mod for the A4, but wonder if it will have to be activated in the system.
Still, if I've done all the work (wiring, etc) then the activation is a smaller part of the task.

i was scouting the net and found this AudiEnthusiasts Folding Mirrors maybe thats something of interest ?

looking at that definitely need to program on the laptop to the car to change from folding to auto folding it was not plug and play which i assumed.

a copy of that vagcom, vcds or elsawin would be handy but takes forever to download i gave up.

Lots of interesting stuff in this article, but too modern for my car, so the part numbers are not useful. (B8 A4, from the dates)
I can see (from this and other pictures) that the cabrio has massive mounts for the mirror (No frame to hold onto) but would expect the structure outboard of the hinge to be common. So I'll keep looking for the mirrors (including broken ones; radical rebuilds are my forte) and try to pull it all together.
In this stripdown, the wiring seems to come to a canbus node (for the door), so the door card does have to come off for the wiring. (It may be that your mirror adjustment motor repair could have been done in situ; with hindsight, would you think it possible?)
