Fuel Smell?

I've recently been noticing a fuelly smell inside the car when giving it some, most often at lower speeds, like full throttle out of a roundabout or out a junction or similar.

Doesnt seem to be as obvious when at full throttle on the motorway.

Cant really see anything untowards under the bonnet, no obvious leaks etc.

However i have noticed that around all four injectors looks "grubby/oily" with the rearmost one worse looking than the rest.

Anyone had something similar? My only thaughts atm are that the injector seals could be leaking slightly, blowing out some fuel/air when on boost?

I get the 'fuelly' smell when coming up to junctions etc but can only smell it with the window open but i think its just because my purge solenoid just venting to atmosphere, when i had the old PFL 1.8 when it smelt in the cabin one of the injector seals went but was only very slight and just looked grubby like you mentioned around the injectors !!

Also check your manifold as mine smelt abit fuelly when my old FT mani cracked !!

I get the "fuel vapoury" smell too, most often when the tank is low, because my vent line is completely open.

This is different though, and new. Its a distinct strong whiff of petrol immediately after flooring it.

Have you checked the fuel tank seal ??

id swap out the injector seals then go from there if on full wot it may be getting past the seal like you said

hows the seal on the FPR ??

nothing obvious under the bonnet, even with the engine running.

I even sniffed all round the bay, and couldnt really find any concentrations of petrol.

didnt sniff there

Only sniffed around the fuel pipework etc.

if its at junctions, check the Z shaped breather pipe on the block under the inlet manifold.

Yeah mines gone need to replace it theres oil mist all over also wanted to change the plastic block breather unit but tps say its not applicable to my car i told them it is and they said its not had a do with the guy on the fone and ended up getting nowhere, anyone got the part number so i can just order it by part number rather than reg

i'll have a nosey at it, did think it would be the seal on the tank but can't smell sod all there.
geting bored of throwing money at it now, kinda lost faith after the oil pickup blockage which has done it's damage to the timing chain, oh and it's rotten wings

Fuel filter?

My rs4 had a similar issue, it turned out that the fuel filter was not installed correctly and was allowing a small amount of fuel to spray out.

Hmm will check that out. Filters never been touched, though i guess it could be rusty!

Mine always has a slight fuely smell, but I've only had it a few weeks so not known any different. Will be intrigued to see what this may be and check for myself on mine. I've had a quick look and not found anything untoward on mine.

Hello Guys,

I have a 2002 Skoda Octavia 1.8T. with the same fuel vapor odor inside the car. For a while I started to smell gasoline inside the car and there were times that the smell was unbearable and I had to lower the windows.

I found the problem on a broken/crack hose that goes attached to the Charcoal Canister. Check picture. At first glance, I was not seen anything wrong, until I move the hoses and found one with a crack. It was cracked at the nipple were it attach the charcoal canister. I just replace it with a regular rubber hose. Make sure to move all the hoses and I am pretty sure you will find a damage one there.

Make sure to work in a ventilated area and make sure dont have nothing that can ignite the vapor fumes.

Keep in mind that the Charcoal Canister job is to is to absorb the fuel vapors that form in the gas tank and then redirects the vapor to the engine combustion chamber. In this way the gases do not goes to the environment and does no make any no pollution.

The smell of gasoline was coming inside the car through the pollen filter. Although the air conditioning is selected to recirculate. As you may know, this part has flap that close and open in oder to recirculate the air inside. That part have a electric servo that have inside some plastic gears and they get broke and does not work. Since this par fail, it does not close 100% allowing outside odor and the fuel vapors to come inside the car.

I took the car to a place where fix air conditioners and they closed the flap with a wire and there is no way that air from the outside enter the car. So I am not using any more pollen filters
