Anyone in here work offshore (oil&gas)

Ive been looking to get offshore as an operator, and its abit harder than i thought,
seems like you need a friend on a rig somewhere to vouch for you,
As no one wants to know unless you have been offshore before.

Any Tips.

Hi m8 I work offshore.
When u say operator do u mean production?

Have u been offshore before?
As u already know its a pain in the a$$ to get a start and most times than not its who u know not who is more suited to the job ...

Hi mate.
no not been off shore, think ive sent my cv to every agency/oil company out there.
it is exactly like that. who you know not what you know.
im on linkedin.
well im a control room/process op for a company called Compact GTL, (gas to liquid) to stop offshore flaring and so on.

My m8 is production operator with an agency called petrofac.
He got his first start through his dad but he had done all the nvq modules off his own back.
im in drilling so a different kettle of fish all together but it's the same with who u know.
only other thing I can suggest is to pester the hell out of companies/agencies with emails and calls until they get sick of u and give in lol.

Robbie's sites are worth checking regularly. It is a pain that a lot of it is who you know.

It may be similar to what you already do, but it might be worth using the terminals like St Fergus and Teeside as a stepping stone to get some contacts.

You might have to take the plunge of getting the certs and training for heading offshore before getting noticed.

Only reason I know it was on as I couldn't get a room in portlethen for my course and ended up staying 20 miles away lol

I put myself through the survival & medical myself, had a job within a month.

I fancy going offshore as I am refrigeration engineer but I have spoken to few guys and they think I make around the same if not more in my current job, I have found it impossible to get a second look however I know a few people that have no trade experience and they are offshore .

Another way is to get a job with a supplier to the O&G industry. I went on my first offshore trip many years ago and was practically offered a job after being onboard for 2 days. I turned it down but your CV will soon rack up with platform names and you became a frequent flyer. The operators love that and it certainly goes a long way to getting a job with the usually suspects. I.e wood group, Petrofac, AMEC, etc

ive just finished on this subject this second then came on here and read this

just emailed 100 companies individually again of a exel spreadsheet my eyes are hurting, but I done my bosiet, mist, banksman slinger 4 months ago and have a nvq level 3 or apprenticeship under my belt, got a few mates out there as crane ops and pipeline inspectors rousts and roughnecks who put the word out but still nothing, the hardest work is onshore trying to get offshore, i have one more trick up my sleeve then may need to try a different approach

been on all the sites and comapnys and agencys aswell

im trying to get on greenhand,rousty,skip and ship,deck crew, instrument tech junior........ been advised to go stewarding but heard there is no progression and dont fancy making beds for 2-3 weeks

Work for the supply chain. Most companies pay extra when your offshore and the wages can match a typical salary offshore. Also the best of both worlds, as offshore work is not for everyone, I.e. young kids, missing birthdays, away at Xmas etc.

If you get a taste for the offshore life, then start applying for jobs as your CV will be populated with offshore trips you have been on

Defiantly get on linked in, I got offshore at the start of the year. Lucky for me they are crying out for instrument techs, got a job within the week, without MIST and BOSIET. My mate who put me in for the job said they were also looking for operators at the same time. I'm with wood group psn, so worth a look on their website. If you send me a PM I can speak to my mate see what sort of jobs are going, maybe get your foot in the door.
