Warranties, main dealers and non warranty faults...

My car is two and a half years old so has six months of manufacturer's warranty left on it, and I need to take it in to a main dealers for them to have a look at it as there is a noise coming from the front of the car when going over speed bumps.
Now if this noise is down to a faulty shock absorber then it isn't repairable under warranty, meaning I won't get it fixed for now as I'll probably replace all of the shocks with better ones.

My question is.... what happens if it is the shocks?? Do main dealers charge you a diagnosis fee if they find the fault isn't covered by warranty??

Individual dealers act differently, you'd need to ask your local one fella, usually no, but they may try & deal new ones down your throat, with the diagnosis being free line, who knows, why not ask them which I know is catch 22, but what other option do you have apart from take it in & see what they say.

Why do you think Shock Absorbers aren't covered by the 3 year warranty?

According to the Warranty T&Cs the only things that aren't covered are:


Components subject to wear and tear are as follows:
• Brake linings and disc pads
• Clutch release bearings
• Clutch pressure plates and centre plates
• Tyres
• Wiper blades (wiper rubbers have no warranty owing to their conditions of use)
• Seat and backrest covers
• Floor coverings
• Spark plugs
• Batteries for key fobs and alarms
• Light bulbs


Mechanical adjustments after six months or 6,250 miles are also excluded from warranty cover such as:
• Adjustments to doors, flaps, boot lids, bonnets, sunroof • Brake adjustment
• Clutch adjustment
• Clutch adjustment
• V belt adjustment
• Ignition adjustment
• Headlight adjustment
• Steering geometry adjustments • Wheel balancing

Yeah, it's gotta go in anyway for something small that is definitely covered under warranty, so I'll mention the suspension noise too and see what happens.

If they don't mention any fees at the point of booking/dropping my car off but try to charge me when I collect then I'll say they should have mentioned it beforehand, and see if that works.

My car is a VW and the warranty looks to be slightly different to Audi (which is weird!). Shock absorbers definitely aren't covered for VWs.... Terms and Conditions : Volkswagen UK

try your luck mate and push it through as a warranty claim, the worst they can say is no, Don't think they would slap a diagnosing fee ontop

Ah that confused me, I had incorrectly assumed you were referring to an A3 !

And it's bizarre that Audi would cover Shock Absorbers under warranty, but VW won't !!

I know this sounds daft but someone had posted about putting their car down to halfords for a free check a few weeks ago.
That found a heap of things wrong.
Not a bad way to check it out

If you're still within warranty they should most definitely not charge you any form of diagnosis fee.

Do you remember how old your car was or how many miles had it done at the time? Apparently shocks are only covered for the first 6000 miles.

Not 100% mate but I'm certain it was around 2 years after ownership so would of been more than 6000 miles, my turbo failed after 9 months and it was after that when I had it done. Maybe they did it as a goodwill gesture after my turbo issues? They didn't mention that it wasn't covered though and didn't indicate that was the case, alls you can do is try your luck mate. Worse case scenario is they say no but IMO your shocks shouldn't be failing after 2 and a half years, I'd argue the toss with them pal
