Fuel tank half full - click...

Don't know if this is just Tesco pumps but since I've had the car it seems to take forever to 'find' a point where the fuel will just fill up without constant clicking and manouvering...

Well today, I managed to get half a tank in then the same - click, click, click, click - oh crumbs fuel is coming out of the filler neck!

As there is only half a tank of fuel, what could stop more going in - the first half went in fine (albeit with a few points of finding the 'spot')...??
 
How much interms of cost is the half tank total?
 
Could be an air lock, or maybe the fuel level sensor isn't functioning correctly. Have you correlated miles driven to fuel used, just to be sure?

Don't have this issue with my A3... any pump, any nozzle angle, seems to be fine.
 
I found (also at Tescos) that i had to rotate the nozzle a bit for it to flow quicker,compared to my last petrol car.Not sure if it's the different nozzle or not.
 
Dont stick the nozzle in as far, i had a similar issue with mine where i was empty but yet it was still clicking and not allowing any diesel to enter.

£35 quid.

The tank was in reserve (as i'd done 450 miles from full). It only took 25 litres before clicking...

Will have to try another garage to see whats it's like - just didn't expect it to spit my fuel back out at me, thought the nozzle was just misbehaving!
 
Happens to my old mans passat, I just stick the pump bit a bit and let it flow in slowly rather than full flow
 
Happens to me in some places. Just withdraw the nozzle very slightly and then twist slightly. Solves it every time.

It's the design of the neck of the fuel tank not being able to cope with modern high speed pumps that have sensitive auto cut offs.

Mind you, rather than that covering yourself in petrol as I did once with my first car. Merrily filling her up, no click and petrol everywhere!
 
When I took the nozzle out the fuel wasn't flowing down the pipe though, just sat there.

Then the fuel that had spilled into the overflow hole went all over the floor...

Same issue with mine at tesco... Need to put it in far enough and twist in all directions to get full flow, usually click click click or very slow flow...

i'd put it down to **** pumps and nothing wrong with your car...

A car refusing supermarket diesel is a car with good taste. I'd do the same if you offered me their own brand cola. :lmfao:

Its the 99-octane super unleaded I use... Highest octane fuel i've found... Prob cos that pump doesnt get used that much cos its far more expensive than regular unleaded

I find turning the pump through 180 degrees works everytime, so you're doing it sort of upside down. That's in my 2004 2.0 tdi. It'll be interesting when I pick up my 2009 sportback next week, to see if it's still the same!
 
It's a Golf platform thing. My Golf MK5 was a pain with certain pumps as well.
 
Right then - update...

Gone to another fuel station and I've had the same thing. This time finishing up with just over half a tank in the car.

Filling it really slowly to ensure that it's going down the pipe and around half full I hear the pipe filling up (sloshing and glurgling) to a point, then click. Left it for nearly a minute and managed to get another litre in, but the same. Now I cannot stand at a pump for another 25 minutes to get anotehr 25 litres in... So what could be the issue?

Does anyone have a parts image of the tank and filler neck - just want to see if there are any obvious kinks, bends, air blockages that could cause this.

Think I'm going to have to call the warranty company and see what's what. Guess I maybe looking at a new filler neck as there is obviously an issue there.
 
So - still have this issue and the warranty 'doesn't cover it'... What a f*^king surprise.

I put as much as I could in yesterday, drove 10 miles then put another 15 litres in. Still nowhere near full though. Can the breather system get blocked up?

Am I looking at dropping the tank and replacing the pipe??
 
Does anyone else have any thoughts or advice on this? It's still happening and I'm stumped (so are Audi)...

Same issue, half tank - fuel in filler pipe, another 10 miles - can add another 10 litres or so...

Why would it be so slow for fuel to get into the tank?

I think something may be floating in the tank and rising up with the fuel level to block the bottom of the filler neck. How you would prove that is beyond me though.
 
Remove the lift pump from under back seats, 4wd has 2, 1 on each side of center of the car, empty tank, have a gander inside with torch, clean as necessary, test filling with maybe fuel or water if you're sure it can all be flushed out, safer aswell, so you can see it coming in when pumps out, making sure to disconnect pipes to engine in the bay & filters, see what it does then.

I would also disconnect/bung lines on tank/s to the front so it stays in the tank, see if this makes any difference.

If it seems ok then refit all after cleaning any residual liquid, water out completely, then fill with say 5-10 litres of fuel, flush through the lines to a bucket or the like in the bay, so it gets rid of water with luck, then test again.

If continues then need to remove all & inspect tbh, tank out, feeder pipes, change lines, lift pump, etc etc.

Mine has a really sensitive filler neck as well, I practically need to take a meal with me when I go fill up, never had so much trouble putting fuel in a car before this!
