Hello,

Just bought a 2007 Audi A3 2.0tdi 140. It came with the built in sat nav and Audi hands free phone kit.

The phone holder is in the armrest and is for old nokia phones but I noticed it said bluetooth on the phone holder.
I tried to pair my Samsung galaxy S3 to it last night but it cannot locate the cars system.
Reading the manual it seems the phone needs to be sat in the hands free holder to set up the bluetooth connection?

Anybody got any ideas as it would be nice to use this option.

Next question..

The multi function steering wheel buttons. I can use the roller buttons to change radio stations and volume but the mode or speech buttons currently seem to do nothing? I'm wondering if this is due to the dash showing a warning light for the brake pads? Or am I just not doing something correctly?

Also the brake pad warning light, its had new pads fitted, last owner said it needs to go to Audi to have the warning light reset. I'm thinking it might be more to do with the connections on the wire from the pads to the car.

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the site.

No, the phone does not need to be sat in the cradle for BT operation, however show us a pic of the holder so can be sure its oem.

Do a search for the BT as soon as ignition is turned on, it will show up as audiuhv etc if its oem system.

Mode/SDS button wont work unless certain systems are installed, eg BT/phone & speech controlled bt/sds specific nav unit.

the pads will either be chepos with no warning wires or the connection is bad
it doesnt need resetting goes stright off with new pads

Yeah sorry Bez, I read the pads bit & forgot to put info on that lol, been a long nights work on a clients mailserver with host admins who are just effing useless, arrgghhh knackered.

i know how you feel iv just done a 45 hour shift glad to be home

Thanks for the replies.

I will get a photo of the holder this evening. I'm sure it is oem as I have all the paperwork to go with it and looks the same as in the manuals.

I did try to connect as soon as I switched the ignition on but my phone would not find anything bluetooth related.

The headunit screen says no phone connected, tried going into setup to see if I could turn the bluetooth on but cannot see any options on the headunit for bt.

I'm going to take one of our work nokia phones home tonight and see if that'll pick it up.

New brake pads are genuine Audi ( or so I was told ) so should have wires on the pads. I'll check connections on Sat and try and get rid of the warning light.

Don't forget to put that car in phone mode using the button on the steering wheel? usually have to enter a pin the first time also

sorry that doesn't read right, put the car radio into bt mode using the button on the l/h/s of the steering wheel

Thanks Matt. I can put it in phone mode by pressing the Tel button on headunit. But I cannot see any option to turn bluetooth on or make it visable for my phone to find it.

Will try again this evening.

Audi BT is on by default, ignition turns system on/off.

I have just tried to sync my phone and also a old nokia work phone and neither will find the headunit.

Pics above of what it says on the screen when Tel is selected and the phone holder in the armrest.

I went into the setup screen and went into settings and notice it doesn't have the 'bluetooth pin' option as it shows in the manual.

Not plugged in at the back of the HU? Could it be that simple?

Yes I have thought that myself. Just need the tools to remove it to take a look.

the cab i have now had the armrest dock but no BT

It has a sticker on the phone holder that says bluetooth on it. So I take it the bluetooth comes from the phone holder and not the headunit?

I tried my mates iphone late last night and still nothing. Going to try and make something up in work so I can remove the headunit and check the connections.

Baffled as to why its not working.

Bns 5.0 headunit, should have Bluetooth lol

I have ordered a set of 4 removal keys so once these have arrived I can check if the phone system has been unplugged.

I do have a receipt for a replacement stereo so wondering if when they swapped systems over the did not plug the phone in.
Last owner never used the phone system as thought it was for old nokia phones only not bluetooth off any phone.

I have a feeling you have the low phone prep, which is not Bluetooth. You basically need the cradle to plug your phone in for it to work. BNS, RNS-e do not have Bluetooth, it is the actual phone Bluetooth module that is installed under the passenger seat that speaks to the systems to allow you to call, search phone book etc.
Best thing to do is get the car scanned with VCDS to see what modules you have.

Thanks Danny,

Might be worth me looking for a box under the passenger seat then as that will answer a few questions.

Taking a quick look at the phone holder it looks like it doesn't have any electrical connections for the base of the phone to connect too, all there is are 2 contacts ( as you can see in my pic above ) that look like they'd touch the battery cover on the phone.

I did try to push this contact/button down but still would not connect.

Sorry to sound stupid but I'm a newbie to all things Audi as just come from 8 years of owning mitsi evos, but what is VCDS?

Thanks for your help.

Its highly unlikely its got the 18 pin basic unit fitted, but you need to dig about the wiring/coding to see.

The cradles usually either dash or armrest both wire into the module under the seat which is also bt, on a 12 pin connector to the 54 pin connector, so effectively you should have it fitted.

As above, you need to check the cars modules, but I would look in gateway to see if 77 is ticked 1st, if so then see if 77 is showing comms issues, if so then it could be a dead module or fuse blown & thus needs changing out or fuse replaced.

Well looked under the passenger seat and no sign of any box being fitted. Checked the drivers side just in case and discovered a nice storage compartment at the base of the seat.

What do I need to buy to get the BT working? Can I pick up 2nd hand BT modules and mount it myself?

Thanks

Check the wiring to the armrest, pull out the rear storage unit that's behind the armrest console & with a torch look in there & check the connector size & pin sockets, so we can see what's fitted.

could it just have been a armrest retrofit ?

I'll take a look tomorrow and take a pic of the wiring so you can see what I've got.

Thanks

Mate, when you say you checked under the seat, I didn't mean check under the seat literally. It will be under the carpet, and the only way to check is remove the seat, trim panels and pull the carpet up.

If this is what you done, then I'm sorry I spoke, LOL ;-)

Lol Yeah I did just literally look under the seat ( as said above just come from the world of mitsi evos and they had the ayc ecu sat under the seat, so thought it might be the same with this bt module ).

So there could be a chance I have bluetooth then :) I'm going to check the wiring from the armrest tonight or tomorrow and see if that gives me anymore answers.

Thanks
Ant

Haha mate, you live and learn. Keep us posted with your findings.

Where in country are you fella, you need to get someone with VCDS to scan really. I am in north London if that helps?

try this VW Group Option Codes Decoder

in your service book and in boot theres a sticker
loads of codes like A3N UQ6 etc
put them in the decoder and if you had BT from factory it will tell you

Thanks Bez, will give that a go over the weekend too.

I have checked the codes from my service manual but no mention of Bluetooth or phone system. One of the codes was for the Navigation but that was as close as it got.

I have also removed the staorage compartment from behind the armrest to take some pics of the wiring as requested.

Also with my headunit is there a lead I can buy to plug my ipod into? I have a 6 disc changer already fitted so does this system have other outputs?

Thanks

That's a 12 pin connector which symbolises it has the BT unit fitted as the low of lowest is 18pin, now it could be an anomaly of course, but seems a bit to obvious atm given connections.

Depending where you are, we can come out & resolve for you, PM if interested.

Thanks NHN.

I had some Headunit removal keys arrive in the post today, so will pop it out and check the obvious first.

I'm in Bristol mate. Are you close at all?

Also on the sat nav system can it be updated at all? We were out yesterday and found a few roads that didn't exist. It has the 2007 disc in the player.

Thanks again

get the 2013 disc

Easy as that with the 2013 disc then. Is that downloadable from anywhere?

Bit of a update with the bluetooth issue. I had my car serviced today and this popped up on the fault scan.

Anybody shine any light on that?

I also popped my stereo out earlier, there is a small L shaped plug that goes into a blue socket (2nd connection on right, single wire) - this was loose as it fell out as I just released it from the dash. The blue plastic surround I think has come away from the plug, making it loose. I held it in position and tried the bluetooth but no different and still will not connect.

Thought I had found the problem for a second then. :rockwoot::(

The error doesn't tell us anything tbh, needs vcds on it.
