Hi everyone,

I've been looking at buying a 170tdi black edition sportback with DSG for a number of months now and have done some general googling and reading around but I'd like to post here to get detailed advice if possible please.

There is a 170tdi DSG black edition for sale locally but it has around 110K on the clock and the mileage is high. The car has a full audi history from the same dealership, and (possibly crucially) the flywheel has already been replaced (which I assume is the only major bit which could fail on me).

Do you know of any other problems or niggles I should look out for when looking around it or test driving it? and what sort of mileages is the DSG box capable of hacking? The car has been changed to 19" wheels with 225/35/19, this won't put excess strain on the DSG will it?

Is the turbo solid or is it failure-prone as some of the 140bhp ones are?

Mines an 07 DSG 170 and has 156k on it, drive like new.

Peace of mind get AA to check it over.
Drive it to see what u think. Should drive well with no noises or hesitation.
If u know anyone with the same model get them to go with u.
If its been well looked after and serviced there is nothing to say it won't be a great car.
I thought the turbo was the same on the 140 and 170?
It might have been changed already :)
Check the service history for work done :)

Turbo on 140 to 170 are different

Thanks for the advice so far.

To be completely honest I know the car well as it is local and it's been very well looked after, it belongs to my mechanic...

I'm not 100% sure but I think the turbo is different on the two engines although I could be wrong.

This I'm reading about injectors, does that only apply to the PD engine as that's what I've been able to gather...

Other than that the box drives nice, no hesitation on the gear changes they are nice and immediate, I must say I am surprised at how low down the revs it changes up when driven 'grandad-ly' lol.

Well sounds like its been looked after m8 :)
Still worth asking/ checking service history to see what's been done so far to put the mind at ease.
Apart from that when u taking the plunge? Lol :)

Lol just waiting on some money that is owed to me.

I just went over and spoke about it at length, it's had flywheel done, timing belt water pump etc has been done as well as DSG oil and filter change, and more crucially for me (motorway driving) the AC works! It is an ex company car and has a full history with it as well as all the receipts when it has been for tyres/bulbs etc. All the servicing work has been done at the same audi dealership.

I guess all that's left is to double check some insurance quotes but I do really like the car.

My insurance is silly cheap compared to my last car.

I'm 23 mate, it's a nightmare for me lol! I have a good few years NCB under my belt though which should help..

the car is 59 plate and I'm going to offer around £13K for it, what do you think?

I suppose its only worth what your willing to pay for it. You need to weigh up if your going to keep if a long time or move it on in a couple of years. If the latter your market will be small Asante would not be willing to pay for a car with potentially over 130 to 140k on it unless it is very very cheap.

For an extra 3 -4 k you could be looking at a 10 plate with 40k on the clock. Personally I would not pay a penny over 10k for it and I would keep it till it blew up !

Bought my 09 170 sport from main dealer with one year warranty and 23k on the clock for just under 13k. In my opinion that sounds expensive for a car with that mileage. Hope this helps

Yes thank you all for your advise.

If I may explain why I am valuing this car higher than the market and then ask for your feedback on my view?

The car has the latest RNS-E retrofitted, lowered on 40mm Eibach springs and has 19" put on already. In addition to this the DSG flywheel has already been changed, the cambelt/water pump job lot has been changed and looking at the service history the DSG oil and filter changes have been done on time or early every single time. The car also has ££ of S3 skirts and whatnot.

If I buy a vanilla black edition it'll cost me time and probably the same amount of money if not more to get it up to the standard it is currently at. In fact since the current owner is in the motor trade I reckon he may have got some bits cheaper than I may be able to source them. The car is only 2 miles away from me, the next closest black edition is over 100 miles away the last time I checked auto trader and as far as I know there are none listed for sale right now at an Audi stealer in my budget.

In your view does that warrant the higher price I am willing to pay?

Makes sense if you are going to modify that way anyway.

I'm not just saying this because I like the car but hand on heart the mods he has made I would have done anyway. The only thing I will change on this car is have the alloys refurbished to last me through winter and get some proper wheels before next summer. The current wheels are RS3 replicas and weigh an absolute ton!

huge difference between a black edition s line etc and a basic sport model so prices would be quite different

Thank you for enlightening me on the difference on all the models. I retract my statement.

Just to add to my reply earlier - I bought my current car at 70K and I'm the chump who ended up going the clutch/flywheel, timing belt & water pump kit, bushings, anti-roll bar links etc etc...so my mentality now is to try learn from my previous inexperience and either buy a car closer to 100K (with all the above done) or buy something with low low mileage like 20 or 30K and then keep it for the long term.

I hope that helps your understanding of my thought process.

You will do another 100k or more without needing to change all above if the current owner has changed clutch/flywheel, timing belt & water pump kit, bushings, anti-roll bar links etc etc

I think it sounds like a lot of money for those miles, even taking into account the stuff done on it. I'd buy something older and lower miles - purely from a resale point of view....you'll struggle to shift that and lose a fair bit when the time comes....rightly or wrongly people dont want high miles unless cheap.

Thank you for the advice everyone, here's the one I ended up going for:

Just with the DSG sometimes there is a random clunk sounds like it is from the DSG auto shifting down from D3 to D2 when I slow the car gently it makes the noise, when I brake harder the noise isn't there?

This has 100K on the clock but isn't the one I was referring to when I started this thread. That one wasn't coming down to a price acceptable to me after reading advice on here :)

No don't mind at all. It's a 170 DSG black edition sportback it hasn't got loads of extras (no heated seats or cruise control) but it has the big screen (RNS I think it is called) with gloss black surround, the one that motorises down to reveal 2 SD card and a CD player. It has a 2011 or 2012 nav disc in there.

Full service history and got some new front tyres out of the deal as well as 12 months MOT, tax is only until Jan or Feb from what I remember. Paid less than 11K for it so I think I done alright? Slightly worried about that DSG noise but hey ho you win some you lose some...It has warranty covering the box so I'm not pulling my hair out just yet.

Lovely car mate,i like the black edition models and it looks nice in white good luck

Cheers guys...just done some googling on the DSG downshift from 3rd to 2nd, it seems to be a common trait on the box so hopefully it all holds together.

Have travelled down south for work and left the car up north for sound proofing and audio upgrades to be done (I'm a SQ geek rather than speed or power) hopefully won't be too long before it is ready! Will post more pics soon.

my dsg used to do that clunk too, quite a common theme for dsg's. Make sure the gearbox has been regulary serviced every 38k, so wouldnt harm to put it through a dsg service now that youve got it- for peace of mind!

nice car btw,

cool thanks for the advice I'll get the oil and filter changed as soon as.

Other than cruise control retrofit and S3 pedals anyone have ideas on what to change?

Looks very nice. I'm after a white S-line Black Edition at the moment. Must be low mileage and have all the extras. But finding it hard to get the right car :-(

Thanks guys.

I'm wondering about cruise retrofit and maybe the aluminium style pedals I've seen on some of the pictures, will try get a quote for a set from the dealer tomorrow.

rear number plate lights once t8ups releases them!

cheers for that, it's a good suggestion.

I'm still driving my previous car and kinda getting bored of it now tbh lol, car is at the audio shop for all my audio refitted... Will try get some pics up by the weekend.

as a guide for prices (i know you have bought one already but for anyone else) last year for an 09 59 s-line 170 tdi with 30k on the clock i paid £15000 from a non franchise dealer.
