Anyone used Dunlop Sportmaxx RT tyres?

Those or the Conti 5s or F1 Assys are good choices.

I've tried most of the good tyres in that bracket and was pleased with the way the PS3s coped on my car so I'd recommend those too.

I had a look at a set of PS3,s today and they didnt look to have much rim protection so put me off due to the Mrs's driving skills !
Not much difference in the prices with fitting with all 4 brands - 117 to 125 quid.
Deffo fancy the dunlops tho :)

As mjr901 says if you need rim protection then the Contis should fit the bill.

F1 Asy 2 also have great rim protection
 
Took the plunge and got 2 fitted today.
The tread looks great with big channels for water.
Rim protection isn't as big as the Sportmaxx TT.

Sorry for the white stuff but I haven't had the weather to clean it lol.

Always good to get feedback on other tyres etc.


The water channels on yours are huge!
 
I've just fitted Bridgestone RE-11 and all I can say is theyre epic! The grip is unreal.

If you read the reviews they're scoring seriously high. In the tests I've found they're on par with Advan AD08 but work perfect in the wet and last the same as a normal road tyre.

I looked at the Supersports but we had the Bridgestone in stock and paid a promotional discount, I got them for £66 each and fitted myself.

Thats a very big incentive to go with the Bridgestones!

If I remember,the Supersports were about £160 each,so you did very well with your choice.
 
What pressures have people found best for road use? I'm running the reccomended 39/30 but it still under steers slightly, I was thinking of dropping the front to like 35/36?

yeah the Supersports retail at that, for me I think they're -~£125-£130 the Bridgestone we sell at £125

To be honest,I haven't changed them from when they were put on......I got rid of much of the understeer with the suspension setup.

Experimenting with the pressures is a good idea if you start at the top end and work down,till you find what suits best.

yeah, I eliminated all oversteer from my old car by playing with pressures, they're so far overlooked in relation to handling characteristics, I wouldn't mind a full geo setup but its never ending with handling. I'm still learning how to corner with Quattro, its a completely different beast in how to drive.

it would seem progressive corner entry then applying power through just creates underteer, I find entering the corner with a tad more speed than required, flick it right into the apex then power through and let the underteer bring it back out.

I looked up ur tyres when u posted it up.
Couldn't find many reviews but the ones I did looked good, especially for dry grip :)
I'm running 36 front and 34 rear which seems to work well.
Don't know if that's under inflated tho as my last set were cracked on the outside of the tread.
The wear was even tho across the tyre :)

thats trade through our garage and a promotional offer as its a new design.
the SP weighs more though? Plus is yours S-tronic?

I rarely ever have even one passenger and only weigh like 65kg myself so rears will naturally be low, just the fronts at 39 don't sound right.

Nah bud I have a manual, I wish it was stronic!
Normally only a myself, the mrs in the car.
I only weigh 76 but I can't comment on her lol.
The sticker in the door says my tyres with 3 in the car should be 41 or 42 front and 34 I think off the top if my head.
41 seems too much for my liking and most folk seem to go 34 - 36 :)

I think we all have our own methods and feel when it comes to cornering.

I try to carry speed throughout the corner,and understeer does affect that,so I started giving the thing a bit of braking on entry to load up the front a bit,but either way,totally changing the suspension and getting some front camber made a huge difference with the sort of power it has.

Until I get it onto open track I'm not gonna fully learn the quattros capabilities, it seems the quicker your entry speed the better results i can find, so obviously I need that safe cushion and space to seriously push it beyond what I previously deemed its extreme limit

Thats by far the best way.

It's not like what some would call a "proper" 4WD car in that it behaves mostly like a powerful FWD car with some rear drive on demand.
It also understeers heavily both due to the squashy suspension,and the forward weight bias from the engine,but it can be cured as you know.
The good thing I would say is that it's not too snappy towards its limits,whereas some like that old Escort of mine,can be very twitchy.
 
I was looking at Dunlops for my car as they will all need replacing in a couple of months. The dunlops seem to be the quietest with A wet weather rating. However not so sure if there is no wheel protection.

Which Conti 5's have people gone for? The Standard have a better wet weather rating than the AO Audi specific version however does the audi version have other benefits that make it more suitable for an S3?
 
There is rim protection mate ,but not as much as say Goodyear efficient. Il take a pic for u tommorow if u want to see how much rim protection there is if u want?
Ideally I wanted as much rim protection as possible as the mrs drives very close to kerbs ...

That would be great pal - thanks. I'm ok with parking and, touch wood, not made any contact since owning the car but sods law if I get tyres without protection. Current tyres are Bridgestone's which do stick out a bit.

Iv only driven it about the town on school runs so far so really can't comment m8.
Iv got a 90 mile drive on Sunday, hopefully a bit of dry and wet comparison knowing the Scottish weather :)

Just a wee update on the tyres if anyone is interested ...
320miles done on the tyres now, the dry grip is phenominal, and I can really push the car faster now.
Very quiet as well, haven't noticed if they are more fuel efficient yet.
Drove to Inverness today in a downpour and the tyres were fantastic, gripping well and going through puddles.
Very impressed with them :)
