Extended warranties - worth it or not for BLB?

Hi Guys,

I bought a 2005 A4 2.0 TDI S-line about a month ago, turns out it's a BLB engine! I've been into my local Audi dealer this morning to chat to one of their managers to see what they would do for me as my car has FASH. Turns out as I predicted they will do nothing! But the guy did admit to knowing about the fault, said he knows of 4 being done in his 8 years at Audi!

Anyhow I really don't want to sell the car as I really like it and I've just had all the alloys re-done etc etc. So I'm thinking about purchasing an extended warranty, either from Audi direct or through Warranty Direct or Warranty Wise. Has anyone got any experience of these? My other idea is to just put the money away each month but if we had the dreaded BLB oil pump failure it probably wouldn't be enough to cover it. Also Warranty Direct covers wear & tear so I could claim for suspension work etc, I'm thinking at Audi's prices it'll probably pay for itself!

I'm still contemplating selling her but I'd rather keep her and get covered just in case.

The Audi warranty provides 100% solid cover but factor in the cost of:
a) the Annual premium which will be circa £1000
and
b) the cost of servicing at Audi to maintain the warranty and you have some very expensive insurance cover.............

Thanks Paul - on reflection and having looked at it the Audi warranty is ridiculously priced. Instead i'll probably go with Warranty Direct, i've read good things about them, they cover wear & tear too and their prices are pretty reasonable. I have actually spoke to them directly and they have an ex VAG mechanic who works there, he is going to confirm back tomorrow in writing whether they would cover the oil pump & balance shaft failures.

I think it might be a wise move, but do check with absolute certainty that the warranty will cover the common faults.

For everyone that fails 100's or 1000's don't. My mate is a skoda master tech and he said they haven't had many fail, his brother who is also a mechanic has just bought a 2.0 tdi 140 lol.

I had a quick read about WD today as was interested. I think you'd be better self-insuring and putting some money away each month.

My Audi extended warranty cost me £42 a month, no mileage limit or age of car, unlike some of the alternative companies I enquired with. Audi interim service is about £140.
I have had the warranty for two years and had the DMF replaced, the oil cooler (along with full coolant flush and new expansion tank) flap motor in the air con and oil level sensor.

Do the math, I have paid less in servicing and Audi warranty and all my engine internals are covered if the inevitable happens.

Sounds like you got a good deal - do you have a 2.0 TDI 140? They quoted me nearly £1000 for 12 months with mine! If you do have a 2.0 140 BLB then i'd be very careful with the Audi extended warranty. When I spoke to Warranty Direct they informed me that the Audi one would never cover the Oil Pump/Balance Shaft because they would class it as wear & tear which wouldn't be covered. WD however will cover that exact failure and I have it in writing from them. Still trying to work out whether to bother or just pop some money away each month in case the failure happens!

My experience with Warranty Direct has been good.
Get a quite online then let there's sales person ring you and offer it cheaper.
I had the dual mass flywheel replaced on a claim, I only had to pay for the new clutch & exces, no labour due to the age of the car.
Earlier this year with the car a bit older i had the power steering pump replaced, had to pay some labour and the excess.
I would say with the premium, excess and small contribution I had £2k work and its cost me £1k.

A word of caution, I have let the warranty expire as I don't believe it will cover the balance shaft failure having read there policy booklet.
I don't doubt you have it in writing in which case I might reconsider, any chance you can scan you letter on here so I can contact them with some ammunition to get mine covered?

Hi mate,

Replied to your PM and forwarded you the e-mail. Still not sure if I'm going to take up the warranty because they only cover Wear & Tear after 90 days and the Oil Pump/Balance Shaft is deffo wear & tear. In order to have w&t from day 1 you have to get an inspection which is £70.

With the dual mass flywheel I knew it was on its way out so took out a policy.
I just drove the car for the 90 days with the fault knowing i couldn't do any further damage.
i then took in to the garage and said there's a strange noise can you inspect it, they diagnosed and I had no problems.
The power steering also started making a noise, took it in no issues.
Theses would both be wear and tear as they are consumable parts.
I think what they are trying to avoid is people claiming for break pads, friction material on clutches or the gearbox failing and then you taking a policy and claiming.
If you have a major part failing, not wearing out then you will be covered in the 90 day period.
I would suggest you would be very unlucky for the balance shaft to fail in that 90 day period and if it doesn't then you are covered for the next nine months anyway.
