Hi guys. Thinking of possibly upgrading to a A4 b6 1.9tdi quattro avant if I can find one when the time comes. I have a couple questions though.

What's the mpg like on the Quattro over the 2wd variant? If its a lot worse then I'll have to look at 2wd's instead.

Whats the performance like of the 1.9tdi and is it worth getting it remapped? Again would this effect the mpg much if at all?

Does anybody use theirs for towing, Are they any good? Looking at pulling about 1.4 tonnes.

Thank you in advance for your time.

They will do just well however if you're looking to tow on a regular basis then i would look for a v6 tdi- more torque and lower gears, mind you- find a nice, tidy allroad and it will tow anything ! I tow regularly big cars, had last night a 2.5 tdi quattro a6 avant on my iffor williams trailer and the allroad did not break a sweat ! ESP, self leveling suspension, low gearing, factory fitted towbar, gearbox cooling, auxiliary water cooling + cruise control, climate control and comfy seats makes for a very enjoyable ride ! Just my 2 pence...

There is a 80% guideline so it means that the load you tow should be no more than 80% of the curb weight of the tow car, however the allroad v6 tdi is rated at 2600kg, a6 avant 2.5 tdi is rated at 2100Kg and the rest of the range at just 1600kg ! Your 1.9 tdi will struggle a little with 1.4 tonnes behind, especially as the brakes are rather small !

Hi just like Gaz my Quattro Avant averages 43-44mpg on a mix of motorway and A/B roads. The standard performance (130bhp) is fine but if you are thinking of towing then a remap is a definite, especially with the weight you want to tow.

Cheers guys. Towing isn't essential as we have a landrover discovery in the household also, would be nice to have it as a back up though.

Any v6 tdi will average 40mpg with your driving style, later BAU/BDG will even do more (!); also the a6 v6 tdi cost less to insure than a 1.9Tdi SE avant ! Go figure !

My 1.9 Avant Quattro (with 170bhp chip) does about 47mpg with a mix of motorway and A/B road driving. That is driving while trying not to use the turbo to much. When I first had the car I did 40mpg enjoying the turbo
The towing capacity for the 1.9 tdi Quattro is 1800kg.

Tom, the quattro 1.9tdi is tow rated at 1600kg on a max 12% incline, also i would check the fuel consumption brim to brim not by the DIS, it's lying ! I have had hundreds of cars and no pd 1.9Tdi ever met the claimed Mpg figure, even FWD models... The 4 wheel drive is rather heavy on the engine and the parasitic loses are high...

Looks like the quattro will be a none starter then, guessing the 2wd isn't much better? :( May have to look at an a4 avant/golf gt tdi or maybe one of the 2005 seat leon's with the cupra kit then :(

My remapped 1.9 quattro saloon gets 44mpg - mixture of spirited & sedate driving... according to program 2 the DIS. My own calculations say just shy of 46mpg based on actual mileage and number of litres purchased.

It's a great car... but I would be hesitant to tow in it because of the brakes, unless you upgrade them.

As above the towing aspect would of been a bonus. We have a Discovery td5 in the house hold which is more than capible of towing everything we need :)

Adamss24, I don't have DIS so the only way I can check my MPG is tank to tank. I consistently get 46-47. I got 37 on a recent trip to the North York moors due to having two mountain bikes on my roof rack acting as a parachute. Tyres make a big difference, my wider summer 18" wheels knocking 2-3mpg off than my winter 17".

Also the towing limit for the 1.9 Quattro is 1800 on a 12% gradient. 1900kg on an 8% gradient (taken from my owners manual). The FWD has the 1600kg limit.
