MIGGZ's A3 1.8t - The all rounder build thread

o just a little update, iv organized a 76mm dp, silicone tip and a new k04-023 for a steal so will collect it tonight!

yay!!!!!!!!!! got my DP, TIP and temp turbo till i hybrid that other one up!

then i wrapped up the dp! now before you comment on the cable ties, i left the clamps at home so this is just for now till i put the clamps on

and the turbo!

So decided I'm fitting k04 on monday!

Big thanks to Goldwagen Delarey and Ash for getting the little spares that I needed

No messin around ! Good luck dude
What manifold will you be running with the k04?

Yeah was going to wait but got a guy that wants my k03 with a sore heart so just decided I have everything why not just do it and get it over with!!!!

Going to use the oem manifold don't like the idea of the relentles manifolds always cracking and leaking! Aint nobody got time for that! And especially that our summers go to 40' +

Awesome stuff Miggz.. Glad your not waiting long to do it! This is going to be one beastly A3... Question is, whats next after this? Hahah

Well thanks to Paradox he has put the NOS idea in my head lol... But after k04 gona look more into a half a cage and wait for Jardo to give me his rear ARB

Hahaha oh no not NOS again... But I'm sure that will just be epic... I got much love for this build dude! Your mod list is an impressive one!

Already got the wiring and throttle positioning switch worked out on the WOTbox but that would be a very faaaaaaaaaar future

Hi Miggs, great to see you finally going to be joining the 8L Ko4 club!!! if you need advise on the fitment of it drop me a mail, i know it was a .... to install, I had done it completely myself:rockwoot:

hey dude thanks for the offer much appreciated!
the install is finished im going to be loading some pics now

so monday night i got cracking with stripping k03 and replacing it with k04.

bonnet off as it is so much easier to work without it on

turbo out after having to deal with stripped bolts on the bracket that took me nearly an hour, 5 smokes and a bag full of swear words

i was actually very impressed with the condition of my turbo

the manifold differences

turbo difference

turbo in

my girlfriend (who was actually helping me ) decided to take a pic of me working on my car!

and the car was pretty much done!

drove to the exhaust shop with only the DP connected and no bonnet on lol it sounded so amazing i was getting so many looks from people hahhaha

from the exhaust shop the car drove fine for 15km then it went to the dogs! epc light came on and the car had no power. got the fault code of P1579 which throws up throttle actuator. so there i am stripping every wire to the throttle body and foot peddle. on ross tech wiki it also said it could be lambda and i replaced the narrow band lambda as when i was taking it out of my k03 dp we stripped the thread. Last thing i thought was to check that. Stopped off by Ashley at goldwagen to check the wideband and still nothing. Went home last night very upset that the car was not right.

Then my dad and i were in the garage when he said lets just put ythe old one back and see what it does?
so we did.... epc light gone!!!! A brand new lambda lasted 15km of driving! and something so stupid screwed up my whole day!

So car is running good now but not 100s as im just using the basic UNITRONIC stage 2+ file and on tuesday Yosh is going to spend some time in the passenger seat while we fine tune the car and see if we going to need a inline fuel pump or not

Big thanks to Superkarl for the kit, Wikus and Ashley at Goldwagen for going out of their way to get parts for me and to my girlfriend for coming over to give me a hand and take pics lol

good stuff buddy,

Sounded well loud and whistley when you started it without the downpipe

Glad its all working now

You did all that in one night, with the head on?! You put me to shame boy! Nice work!

hahahahahahah no stripped off k03 and that on monday night started at like 19;20 then finished and 21;30

then tuesday i did the k04 install lol but had to do a list of things not just fit k04, had water leaks, boost leaks, stripped bolts and needed to retap line for oil return and waited for parts to arrive

Good stuff bru, how did u manage to get the tip in with the water heat lines in the way?

so far thoughts for K04.... waste! i think cos my K03 was so strong putting k04 does not feel worth it!

iv been dealing with so much fails this past week that i nearly put this car up for sale!

new lambdas, 3 different TB, water leak on turbo, the water pump with under 10 000km failed, insert on turbo stripped, boost pipes popping off, dipstick holder is breaking, tip that previous owner decided to butcher is falling apart!

this is what the water pump did

last night did some mapping before boost pipe said **** you! going to move a few things around tonight and check for leaks and that then will see

ah man that's **** luck!

Trust me though, the ko4 will definitely be worth it when it's all ironed out and finished off.

worlds apart from a ko3S, so much more top end pull. 10x better.

You'll get there!

yeah everyone says that, but apparently getting more then 260whp with pump fuel is going to be an issue! so now i need my hybrid running lol

Geez bud whats with all the badluck!?! It doesn't seem to end hey... But I know you'll sort it out and hit that 260 whp mark

Miggle I struggle to get to grips with your power figures and expectations a little bit dude.

What was your last power run on the ko3S before it came off?

Over here, the best ko3S the world has ever seen - Mylos, made 230whp, 264 at the crank. Absolutely, ON THE LIMIT, that's all it could or would ever make. I love yours to bits, but I struggle to believe it would have rivalled mylos, 220whp would be the more likely figure, 250ish at the crank.

What do other cars of specs that we know tend to make over there? I'm wondering if your dynos read hugely differently, or if the cars are tuned differently somehow?

What you've done currently, is go from an absolutely top notch ko3S setup, at the very top of it's game, to a really fairly average ko4 setup. Crappy small silicon tip, nasty stock exhaust manifold. That's not me being nasty at all dude, I still love what you've done, but that's the truth of it.

A used ko4 on a stock exhaust manifold and a normal TIP isn't really going to make much over 260bhp at the crank at all, so despite a little extra lag low down, you may well not have gained too much up top anyway at the moment, hence you feeling down about it :(

To make a ko4 work, and I mean really work, it NEEDS a high flow manifold, and it absolutely desperately NEEDS a B5 80mm TIP. Without that you're always going to struggle to see much more bhp over your old setup, and it's going to feel like wasted money, hence you feeling down at the moment.

as for 260whp, over here that would relate to over 300bhp, which is pretty extreme going on a ko4. you're not going to see more than that.

Get a manifold on it, get a TIP on there, and have it tuned properly, 1.5bar MAX boost, LOTS of timing, and it'll all make sense!

Hiii prawny

Well I am the highest k03s here, got the reading of 230whp (172wkw) at the dyno that everyone uses its the most accurate dyno in the south of south africa, the 2nd highest figure was 227whp, my mate dwayne in his polo gti made 205whp, without headwork, cams, water meth, inj and maf housing. The top cars now with same setup as what I had made 220 to 223whp.

Most the k04's here hit 260whp + and with fuel aditivis and timing get 280+whp.

I'm doing work again on the motor on tuesday then ill get a figure on power again to prove!

I'm not putting a relentless manifold on my car as the temps here in SA get to 40' and I'm not interested in having to weld up the cracks every weekend!

As for the 80mm tip that will come once I get some money again.

eek!

25 psi, Speak to Bill or Niki, what that will do is overspeed the turbine low down and create too much heat, which will kill the top end off.

Any idea what kind of ignition advance it's asking for (and achieving if you have 0 pull) at WOT as the revs climb?

Niki managed to get 304bhp / 338lbft from Westys stock k04 on a brand new motor

Bill managed to get 282bhp /293 Badgertorques from Gops car on 180k miles! That converts to about 340lbft elsewhere!

Both had absolute peak boost of 21psi. 1.45bar, absolute max.

Have a word with your tuner, see if he's prepared to experiment dude, the turbo can't hold massive boost to the top end, but ti can hold massive timing and reasonable boost, and give a way faster car :)

I hope I'm not coming over as negative here, just really want to help you to get the absolute most from it :)

No dude not at all hey!!! I love the input!

Yosh was playing with the car this week and he set it up like that! We doing more tuning next week once the motor is sorted again

log timing, be interesting to see what it's making. I forget which block that is on mE7.5, I still run a dinosaur spec ecu so things are different :p

For reference, single digits on timing are bad, 10-20 is reasonably typical, upwards of 20 is fairly strong. Bill runs about 24 degrees on the lupo, small port, mine runs 25.5 degrees with scope for more. I'd imagine with your current high boost approach it'll be running fairly low timing.

With more timing, it'll feel much more aggressive too, which should feed your need for lairyness :racer:
