my car has the piano black gloss interior trim but i notice my gearstick surround and ashtray are just normal matte black plastic, but some of the other cars i test drove had the walnut finish and the aluminium style finish and both had the same effect on gearstick surround and ashtray, should mine have the same gloss black around the gearstick??

It's meant to be matte black. I don't think Audi ever made the gear surround and ashtrays in piano/gloss black

Ide be interested to know this too as mine sounds the same as yours, both the gearstick surround and ashtray have started to peel and it would be good to know if there is a surround that could be bought to match the rest of the trims before I go to TPS to order replacements

i was thinking of getting some kind of gloss black vinyl wrap and trying to match as gloss as possible to original

Take off the pieces and match the black with a spray colour then spray it

Might as well give this ago, I planned on replacing them anyway because mine are peeling so if it don't look right ill buy new

interesting must keep an eye out in breakers yards, however a quick google brings up ecs listing the parts and the gear surround is $260!!!

On Vagcat (prices in euros) the ash tray cover is about £30 & the gearstick surround is about £50

ill be in garage in morning getting fuel filter replaced so ill quote the numbers and check it out cheers:thumbsup:

was in local seat garage as nearest audi garage is well over an hours drive away and got them to check part number the gearstick surround is €55 ex vat and part number is 8E0864261A(N) N for manual the H was for auto, the ashtray cover is €26 ex vat and the exeo part number is the same bar an E at the end 8E0857967E, Inc vat works out at €100 i think ill wrap first and if im not happy i can buy the parts

Ive just painted mine to get rid of the matt black that was scratched, make sure you remove all the rubber coating before spraying.
All fitted with new gearknob, chuffed with it.

any pics what spray paint, primer etc did you use

I'll get some tomorrow.
First remove the ashtray cover and surround then seperate the 2 alli strips on the ashtray and the strip that holds them.
I used wet and dry to remove the rubberised coating followed by 4 coats of grey primer de nibbing between coats,5 coats of gloss black de nibbing again.I applied 6 coats of laquer and de nibbed as neccesary. All done with cans.
A massive improvement from the standard finish imo.
