Mitsubishi evo 9 intercooler into S3, possible?

I have a used mitsubishi evo 9 intercooler laying around that I was thinking giving it a go to my S3.
Plan is to keep the fogs and grills, not loosing those.

The intercooler looks like this:

the size is:
The core size is 19" x 11.5" x 2.75"
Overall dimensions are:
24.5"x11.5"x2.75"

Note that my car is LHD.
Planning on using 2" or 2.5" piping
What do you think?

PS: I have read every page in the fmic section, I know about pretty much all of them, but since I have the evo one ready, might go with that.

Also have another intercooler that is 28"x7"x2.5" but i guess it won't fit since 28" is like 4" more than wellycooler.
 
Any intercooler will fit,as for the dogs,it depends on the pipework I guess.I'd do it if I were you.
 
I will probably do it. the only thing that would make me change my mind is the necessity of removing the fogs, or having a messy pipe-work. Ideally I would go AHfab, but the price + shipping to me would be enormous VS fitting the evo intercooler.

Also 2" piping doesnt seem to be a valuable option around here...but I do have pretty much all the pipes i need in 2" (which is 51 mm).

The end goal is a hybrid turbo (aiming 330 bhp), so I want to do the intercooler setup once and for all accordingly
 
You are right, smaller than stock makes no sens. I was thinking, smaller pipes, larger intercooler = maybe better results over the stock twin-intercooler. But I will get another pipe set, do it once for all.

Bill once you see my iat's, you will understand the urge lol

Note that the Mitsubishi evo 9 intercooler is very light and supposed to be more effective since its made from aluminum.

Will be working on this slowly, but I hope it will solve my low reading maf problem. Car pressured for leaks and got none, swapped with a used maf and got the same reading so I assume the maf is fine. I do have a new maf sensor to try on the way, as i have promised in another thread.
My iat's are sky high, I think Scullies had similar prob with iat's and ended up getting the car back to stock (before he started his big turbo)

i used 51mm piping to the intercooler.
After the cooler it was 63mm.

made 320hp and 435Nm with a k03 hybrid.
 
So a ko3 made 320hp, whats that in bhp because theirs no way on this earth a ko3 turbo would make that bhp let alone a ko3s.

aluminium dude..
Oe with plastic ends most often..
aftermarket are ally

looks like its a decent pipe outlet similar to when I mod the toyo core for s3 fitment and keeping foglights
something to consider for a rainy day

low maf reading wont be the intercooler which is after the MAF in airflow terms..

and you would have made more with larger pipework and less pressure drop across smaller than OE pipework

dyno lottery applies to figures.. According to a local dyno to me my k03 hybrid on lupo us 344bhp... lol It aint
 
Of course i know intercoolers are made from aluminum and not from wood. excuse i missed to explain that its made from better quality material aluminum that disperse the heat better. Is the chinese made intercooler will be as effective as a better quality one? I don't think so and we all know that. That was what i meant. Also not to mention that the current intercooler (chinese) feels more stainless steel.

Anyways, I ended up not fitting the evo intercooler as the piping started to be complicated, I opted for another intercooler laying around. Size is smaller but i will try it as is see what results i get.

as for my maf readings, I have tried everything and they are still low. maybe map related but I doubt as my stock readings are low too, and I did try more than one maf (all used) with same results.

my map is still far from perfect, but while waiting to get a decent one we will keep working on it.

ok, here the proof.

Runs 95 octane + 7 liters of 96+% bio-ethanol.

This dyno is pretty accurate, it wasn't a cold day. JD Engineering is one of the better tuners in the EU. And the superflow rollers are not ****ty rollers..
I rolled it on the dyno at my work, that has a lot worse cooling, and it made 312hp with 430Nm.
So I belive can say it is correct don't you think?

I see i confused hp and bhp, it is 320bhp. here in holland we only use hp (and it means engine hp)
but still a good result if you ask me.

I know what I am talking about, i work for a company called TVS Engineering, look up the projects. You can see what we build ;)

The dyno from the plot is callibrated every 2 months.

lots of folks quote power figures from blah blah tuners/dynos etc etc etc
done to death, and variance between them is huge. which is why this avatar is so apt ;)

i guess yoiu have never logged your egt's with that level of boost ;)
those boost levels are plausable for that power... i agree.. mind your egt's tho
 
EGT levels where fine.

Running Ethanol the EGT will be low.
Cracked a mani with 98 octane.

With ethanol nothing cracked.
Sold the turbo after a year, and no cracks at all.

Measured on 2 dyno's would be enough i think?

there is no offence intended, you also do great work with your hybrid and 3" tip's ;)
 
Ethanol requires a bigger fuel system, 30% More fuel. so whats the deal with adding it to normal petrol, how do you work with that. different afrs required with ethanol etc. is there a limit you can add before the fuel system and mapping needs to be changed
 
We had e85 here for a couple of years until they decided to get rid of it. It was cheaper than regular petrol as well. Oh the Irish government, full of great ideas....
 
The advantage of mixxing with ethanol is that it is more detonation proof.
And you don't need to inject more fuel. A wideband can manage it.
So if there is no e85 or pure bio-ethanol you can mix you can just run on 95/98/102.
with e85 i used to mix about 15L on a tank. With the pure stuff i can mix 6-7 L before it goes to limpmode.

you can see a profit of +20bhp
that is another reason I made my s3 apy a wideband.

Another benefit is you can run cheap gas and stil get max power.
here in Holland most of the extreme tuners use it.

if i got some spare time i will set it up on the rollers and show before and after :)
 
Quick question, sorry to hijack thread ; ) I can get hold of a intercooler that measures in at 650/250/90 can anybody advise would this intercooler be good enough for a s3 ?
 
90mm is crazy thick, most of us just manage to get 76mm cores in behind the bumper sooo, i dont think its doable

it will be like dude you seem to have a car fitted to your intercooler :)

90mm deep core will be some serious trimming....
how many zillion bhp you going for?
 
I'd be happy with anything from 250 to 280 bill, just gathering bits before I get a map at some stage, not after mad power just want the car to run well and keep temps low :yes:
