Hi all

just wondering if any one could help me out. these past couple of weeks there has been a ticking noise that i havent heard from my engine i have found a video. This isnt my car but its sounds the same as mine
Audi A4 2.0 TDI.AVI - YouTube

Another thing is my car is burning oil so fast i had a full serive around 4k ago and iv burnt through loads since then is this normal on these blb engines or is there something i can do about this.

Thanks in advance.

Have the issue investigated at a VAG garage immediately or you could be faced with a new engine as mine made a similar noise and I had it repaired just in time!
Read the thread 2.0 tdi oil pump/balance shaft issues circa 4th one down from the top of the page. You can get away with reading say the last 5 or 10 pages for you to make a decision on what to do.
With respect to oil consumption I would say my own BLB uses a litre every 4000 miles and mines at circa 90k. Audi engines generally us a lot of oil and all the models I have owned have done the same for the last thirty years.
Read the manual for a guide on the oil consumption.
Good luck with the car and keep us posted .

Well! Just come back from a vag specialist and they have have told me.that it is the oil pum balance shaft that needs replacing and its going to cost around 2k to be replaced which is expensive in my eyes as i only payed 4500 for the car. How much did ypurs come to alltogether if you dont mind me asking. and these blb engines are crap iv had this 4 months and this is the another thing iv had a problem with. Dont no whether to sell the car and get another one or get it fixed.

I would take it to Audi and see whether they would contribute towards the fix as its a well known issue ?

mine cost £450 for the pump to be converted by powermax, then £800 for fitting by a local vag specialist (this included cam belt, aircon re-gas, gearbox and final drive oil changed,) at least half what audi would have charged.
I have my old pump if you want it, have that converted then get an independent to fit it, you can have it for postage costs.

Thats not a bad price and thanks for that but just spoke to my local german specialist and hes going to round some prices up for me which are normally a good.price.

also i have just come across a bloke in lond that will suply and.fit a bre 170bhp engine will this be ok to put into my blb 140bhp

I think you can but you will probably need the ecu as well, where abouts are you?

Are these pricey are they? Im in oxford during the week and gloucester at weekends

just reading another thread about engine swaps, its not so easy-apparently you would need the ecu and the dis screen from the doner car as everything is coded, probably less hassle to change the oil pump.

****** hell to be honest i might just sell the car because these seem to be bad engines

to be honest, the only real problem with these engines is the oil pump- you will get egr problems with most diesel cars, at least we haven't got dpf's!, mine has been spot on since the pump was changed

Yes the plus side is we don't have the DPF units to worry about but the BIG negative is Audi produced a design with a well documented latent defect and have done nothing to help the second plus owners of the cars affected. They simply have hidden behind their 3 year, 60,000mile warranty and if your outside this you can all ****** off attitude has left a bad brand feel for may on this board. Not me I hasten to add, I think Audi are marvellous ..........................

LOL! I second that! just another big corporate only interested in profits not loyal customers, but I don't suppose they are any different to any other manufacturer be it cars, TV's, phones, or anything else we buy.

Oh no not another, only warned someone recently about this & his was on 170k.

this has been on my mind for a while now
seems i worry about then say sod if it happens it happens and then back to worrying about it again
so that i can enjoy the motor again i,m thinking of getting this sorted
hubbo 1 if that offer is open for the pump to anyone i,d be interested sent you a pm

more than welcome-just taking up shelf space

Just been quoted a rough price of 800 for upgraded parts and labour which isnt too bad after my last quote of 2000
Is there any other parts of the engine or anything that is worth replacing to more stronger parts to stop anything like this happening again.

Cheers

just make sure the hex drive is the new longer one 100mm iirc, the problem was 2 part with the chain driven pump.
1. plastic adjuster and cog
2. hex shaft was only 70mm and will round off

800 seems a good quote does that cover everything to make this problem go away
i,d pay that no problem just to get peace of mind

cheers hubbo1

Yer that was a rough quote tho he said thats what it was to do an a6 i should get exact figures tomorow ill keep u up to date

Well just got of the phone from the garage a full cost is going to be 1245. They are going to be removing the chain and using cogs instead and the longar part aswel. so booked in for saturday hopefully goes all well

That's an excellent price as the parts alone from Audi ( with a 20%discount ) cost me £1100 back in 2011 for a full chain to gear conversion.
While its down I would recommend you have the cambelt, tensioner and water pump replaced as the additional cost now will save you money long term.

Oh, I forgot to add I had the bearing shells replaced on mine as well ...................................

Quite a bit that think iv got a bargain and i got the timing belt pump and tensioners done 6k ago so should be ok with that but unsure what the bearing shells are what parts are these todo with and were they pricey
cheers

The bearing shells are what separate the the piston con rods from the crank shaft. I had mine replaced for £200 when the engine was down. The shells on mine were showing signs of wear at 68k so I decided to have them done at the same time as the rest of the engine. I generally keep my cars for a very, very long time hence the reason for the work. If I was to be selling the car short term I don't think I would have bothered.
I see you had your belt replaced 6k ago. I would still have the belt replaced ( not the tensioner) as this is a low cost item that can be damaged when doing the oil pump assy.
Keep us posted with the after repair and what your thoughts are.

Who sells the longer hex shafts? And has this been proven to solve the problem?

I suggest you read the 2.0 tdi oil pump/balance shaft thread near the top of this forum as there is no one stop, easy answer to your question.
I therefore respectfully suggest you do some research of your own and then make your own conclusions as to what's best for your particular engine code.

Yes I have read the thread. Mine is a 2007 BRD so I suspect will be gear driven and only be subjected to the hex drive problem.

I have also had injectors replaced on recall. Car has not dropped a beat afaik.

Also like to comment that the thread is a bit of a mess, this information should be summaried into a website or blog as there appears to be a lot of general chat on that particular thread which is of no use to the majority of people that visit the forum searching for an a solution.

I totally agree with you about the thread and it is rather a mess because people keep asking the same type of question repeatedly. Everyone wants a quick and cheap fix to their own problem and few can be bothered researching the issue. I guess if the information was all consolidated a few people would still start other threads about this matter.
Another consideration is can YOU be bothered to consolidate the information onto a blog or website. I know I can't..................
