Cool feature of Electronic Handbrake, without Hill Hold

Found out by a fluke, that there is some kind of anti roll feature in the car that stops you rolling back on a slope and gives you about 3 seconds to get the handbrake on after you've stopped moving.

Firstly i thought i was cracking up but after a few attempts it was proven as a driver aid Couldn't find any mention of it in the manual which i thought strange

It must be inclusive if its holding whilst on a hill & no brake applied.

I would check the label codes for your car, usually inside page of service book & go to parts department & ask them to pull up your cars features & see if HHA is included, maybe a default system employed on specific cars, there's an online system to check codes but not sure it caters for 8V or the 8V codes as yet.

Does it not have the A button by the electric handbrake lever?

AFAIK all 8v cars have the "3 second" hold feature before needing to apply the handbrake as this is mainly for stop start traffic.

Hill Hold Assist is an enhancement of this where it will hold the car indefinitely when activated ie no need to manually apply the handbrake at all.

This is standard - there is a Audi A3 short user guide online (german only I'm afraid) which explains this. Cool feature! The hill hold assist will more or less hold the car indefinitely after releasing the parking brake is the way I understand it (provided engine running etc obviously)...

It will be a coding option if it has a 3 second HHA, so it has the capability already.

I get my car in just under 2 months and would be a willing test subject, nearly specced it in the first place. As long as it wouldn't invalidate the warranty.

It sounds similar to the system employed on the 13 plate A6 courtesy car I had a couple of weeks ago. Two buttons, 1 for manual brake & another for Auto (same\similar icon as the auto-recirculate heater button) w\ a green indicator in the display showing when it actually engages.

I have this option available, at first it was a pain as I didn't spec HHA, but will old the car in any incline allowing you to get into gear and bitethe clutch After pressing the brake, is annoying in my drive where there is a slight roll while reversing when checking parking place.

Does anybody know whether this 3 second period is disabled if you spec HHA and then turn it off? As dieseldoug says, I can imagine it being a pain when doing tight/slow maneuvers (especially in an auto, where you might want to rely on the 'creep' functionality to edge forwards slightly)

I really wish I had added the fully automatic 'Hold Assist' option (£90), all UK 8V A3's have the 'Hill Hold' (3 second on a gradient) function as standard.

I did enquire with an Audi garage about a retrofit of 'Hold Assist', I was told 'there is no kit available/offered by Audi to perform this retrofit'.

Hopefully that may change one day.

The brief hold system is standard - it has to be really with an electromechanical handbrake as otherwise you wouldn't be able to do a proper hill start since you can't release the brake smoothly/gradually.

I found this by accident, where I would park sometimes is on an incline. I was going to leave it in neutral , and allow it to gently role back and found my car stopping half way back on the incline. I look at my feet and handbrake to see if it was on and wasn't!

My car was an ex-fleet so I don't know if this is a standard or optional extra.

It's find it's pretty straightforward without it. On my last car, I had the electromechanical parking brake without any hill assist. You just flicked the parking brake on and when you were ready you just pulled away as normal and the brake released at the bite point.

Granted though, it saves time when you want to manoeuvre the car on an incline. It's one of those features you quickly get used to and would prefer not to have to live without.

No - you get both if you spec Hill Hold Assist. If you press the brake lightly, it doesn't activate though so it's perfectly feasible to do as you say. I'm assuming the S-Tronic is the same.
