hi all my 2007 is booked in for stage 2 custom remap at performance torque next month and i carnt wait, anybody else used these? and what figures are u getting? how much of a step is it going from standad to stage 2? thanks craig

I haven't any experience of them to be honest, but assuming their Stg2 is the same as most other tuners version, then it does make a big difference.

The biggest difference is to use software specific for an uprated HPFP such as the Autotech or Loba,as this smooths out the torque dip in the midrange that you would otherwise get,and if it's being done next month, you may want to think about it.

Have you uprated the suspension as well?

Will at P Torque remapped my previous Cooper S Clubman and did a good job, he's well known in the MINI scene as tunes the challenge race cars.
I wouldn't hesitate in using him again except he's only got a 2WD dyno so I'm looking at going to R Tech in the near future with my S3.

Remember to budget around £1200 for a new clutch in the next few months. My 40k S3 clutch lasted 6 months after being remapped. My 225 TT lasted 50k on a remap by comparison.

Depends on what sort of clutch you want.

If you go for an OEM replacement, you can get them cheaply, and even the Sachs can be had for a decent price, but the Loba and other similar clutches are not cheap.

I used to hear good things about Will and P Torque on seatcupra.net, he has done a fair few maps for mk2 leons on there :)

£950 for a stage 2 Loba Sachs clutch from me including SMF.

The LOBA-Sachs sports clutch kit includes:-

  • Sachs Performance clutch cover
  • Sachs Performance clutch disc organic
  • LOBA Billet lightened & balanced single-mass flywheel made of special chromoly steel (6.7 kg)
  • clutch cover screws
  • Torque rating 550 nm / 405 lbft

I'm having this kit installed at AmD tuning tomorrow for £1300 (plus release bearing, if required, for an extra £55+), after having had Revo put stage one remap, induction and recirc dump valve on my car, then subsequently boiling the clutch not two hours later on the quarter mile. Heed these guys warnings. Budget for an uprated clutch and flywheel.

What sort of power can the DSG handle?

Power is not the issue,it's torque,as with any clutch system.

The DSG can manage around 400lbs or so with a remap, and after that, you need a new clutch pack.

HPA Motorsports and SSP can supply these but as with all things like this, they are not cheap.

Cheers for replys guys already have the loba stage 2 clutch fitted as the clutch was sticking to the floor on hard driving. Don't want to put fuel pump on yet as I want the loba one which are expensive so that will be next year with hopefully a loba lo400 :) haven't done anything with suspension as I think the rides stiff/hard enough and I've lowered cars and I think it ruins them personally.

ARB + ALK are essential even at stage 1

What RedDejavu said.

The car will feel OK on standard levels of power, but it gets properly wobbly when you start raising it's performance.

Changing the ARBs and adding an antilift kit won't harm the ride quality, but it will vastly improve the grip and body roll.

just interested in what kind of ALK you would recommend for a bit of playful fun but not serious tracking as in value for money not professional kit alex?

You can buy Whiteline ALK or Superpro ALK, both similar however Superpro seems to be a bit more reliable however fitting takes longer as its just bushes you replace with the OEM ones. Whiteline does a whole metal mount + bushes so is less fiddling but apparently prone to cracking.

To be honest, you really don't have a huge number of choices.....

There's the Whiteline kit,at around £160

Whiteline Anti Lift Kit Golf Mk5/Mk6

and the Supaloy kit, which I have.

Supaloy

If I remember,it's about £350-400,but includes a lighter,stronger TCA.

Is there that much difference between S3s & Supaloy TCA?

If you look at it,the Supaloy TCA is much better finished and more robust, plus of course has all the bushes uprated, and the ALK chucked in so to speak.

so just change bushes can increase handling then? i get tht obv the ARBs will be doing best part tho.

I have my car booked in to do just the ALK bushes however could have done the whole front arms if they are worth the hassle:p.

Changing all of the bushes isn't a cheap job but will improve overall feel.

The ARBs will make a BIG difference.

I think that when you've done everything else like upgraded the suspension and bushes etc it does make a difference.

Mine had all of that and more done and this was like the icing on the cake almost.
The difference from the TCA alone is not a big one.

R-Tech only have a 2 wheel dyno, simple disconnect of the Haldex underneath an your sorted, Nik does all this in about 2 mins

ARB are just fantastic, did mine and the car drives just much much better however still understeers so fitting superpro alk next week + lower engine mount and maybe new coils next year.

Hi all!

Ive just stumbled across this thread which is good & bad....

Good - explains why the S3 feels wobbly as f*ck on slight corners at speed!

Bad - more money!

Ive not done anything to the suspension, never wanted to as I always thought it was cosmetic (until now) which effected performance / ride.

Can I please confirm, which need doing (ARB, ALK, suspension) what order & why?

Thanks as I appreciate it,

Mike

ARB cause standard suspension is poo and very wobbly not to mention oversteers like mad! ARB give you less roll and car feels much more stable round corners (front soft rear hard set up works best imo). ALK because you get extra grip and more feel through the steering wheel, set of coils would make the whole car tigher and sharper but its not a must can stick to stock set up if money is short.

Thanks pal, looks like my next plan will have to go on hold....

I'll take your advice & have to look where sells / fits ARB & ALK in Manchester and cost it all up.

Mike

From stock, the S3 is basically setup to be brisk but not fast, and also to be safe(i.e. understeer) as well as fairly comfortable(i.e quite soft suspension).

So,what you get is a car that works OK on the stock suspension, but when you push it,feels a bit vague and soft, and will understeer heavily.

My recipe for sorting it was as follows...

1.ARBs ,as this makes a big difference.

2.Suspension,which also makes a big difference to the way the car rides and handles, and vastly improves performance on bumpy roads, where the stock gear gets wobbly and confused.

3.ALK and TCA mods can be done next, but don't add as much as the first two.

4.Suspension bushes are worth considering along the way as they do tighten everything up,and sharpen handling, but do them if you're doing the suspension to save time and cost.

5.Haldex controller will take a bit more understeer away and improve traction.
I wouldn't recommend this unless you're at Stg2+ or above,as the difference is pretty subtle.

The ARBs are pretty cheap, and there are suspension kits from a few hundred pounds to several thousands so you have a wide choice.

Have a look through here for a few pics of the suspension and ARBs if thats any help to you.

Cheers Alex!

I'll have a look but what (I realise I'm going to sound like a donkey) does TCA stand for...?
