When I go to ambient air / economy but no extra cooling I get a stale smell sort of damp tramps trousers. Is there a problem and a cure?

I had something similar before my car was serviced last week (although I don't know what Tramps troosers smell like :ninja: )! They renewed the cabin\pollen filter and all is well again.

when I turn my air con on it smells like a dead tramp. only had it filled a few weeks ago

Guys what you need to do is before you turn the econ off or the air con for that matter whack it up to Hi and leave it blowing for a few minutes every few weeks this will solve the issue eventually.

It comes from the bacteria that grows in the system if you keep it on low and simply turn it off it acts like a breading ground, I read a post somewhere that said to cure it do the above and walla I've never had the issue since. You only need to keep on top of it now and again but it worked for me, ok in econ mode the air does smell a little different but it shouldn't smell as bad as what you say it does above.

Try it a few times and see if it makes a difference it did to me.

ps I have had my car for 6 years and never once had the air con serviced and it still blows nice cold air when I need it, ok it may need topping up or a check up but even in this weather its cold enough to cool the car down, even on long journey back from Cardiff with 4 ppl in it.

^ what he said!
about a minute from ending your journey, crank the temp up to high and switch function to auto for a bit, then to demist for a bit and finally recirculate for a bit.
what this does is dries out the ventilation ducts so no damp stale air is trapped causing a bacteria build up.
i had this problem last year, tried using a bomb but did not work!
i tried this method that i discovered on here and never had the problem since!
i also read that using the econ mode button is bad, as sometimes this can cause problems with the aircon not switching back on again and forever stuck in econ mode as the compressor clutch will not engage! very expensive to buy a new aircon compressor, and a pita to change the clutch assembly.
so to summarise, don't use the econ button, and heat your pipes before switching off and you will have sweet smelling aircon!
also, i got mine regassed last winter at kwikfit on offer for £29 as nobody uses cold aircon in the winter! they do a policy that if it will not charge up because of a fault or leak, there is no cost to you.
mine charged up ok and over the last few months has been a god send! ice cold and lovely!:cold:
it is recommended to have the aircon gassed annually btw.

I changed my pollen filter today and realised that it was well past its best ( black) However thanks for all the posts... it sounds like i need to get ducts hot after each run for a good dry out.

Fella you don't need to do it after every run just now and again and you will be sweet ;-)

Guessing the hot air technique is for all air con motors, rather than model specific?
