Oil pressure warning light

Good morning.

Hope this is the correct place to post this query..

Drove 400 miles yesterday, the last 5 miles of which I noticed a slight deepening of the engine tone. Drove 2 miles this morning and the red oil pressure warning light came on. I pulled over immediately and checked oil as suggested in manual. This seems fine. Please could someone advise best next steps (note I have virtually no mechanial knowledge). I have breakdown cover and am close to local garages.

It needs the oil pressure measuring with a gauge to diagnose either a faulty oil pump/drive or a faulty oil pressure sensor.
Seeing as you have no mechanical knowledge I would suggest you get a garage to do this.

Get the breakdown service to tow you to a decent garage and DO NOT start the engine/drive the car in the mean time.

thank you for suck a quick reply and advice. Any idea what the change in engine tone might be. This worries me!

You ever seen Deuce Bigalow? Based on my out of work hours escapades. Lol.

In regard to the OP second question, it may be related to the oil pressure issue and there was a gradual decrease in oil pressure until it fell below the threshold to bring the warning on. However until the cause is found that is a pure guess.

When was the vehicle last serviced and what mileage does it currently have?

It was serviced about 2 years ago. I havent changed the oil since. To be honest I rely (it would seem wrongly) on the warning lights to advise me. mileage 100k. From having a read around the other threads a long journey seems a common theme. By the way the RAC man wanted to drive it to the garage a mile away. I told him not to even start it. He said, well how will the garage test it without starting it? I said I didnt care. He was to tow it!

You're better off changing oil every year.
 
So initial report from garage....
very thick sludge oil. This will be flushed out etc. £100. Only then will they be able to assess engine, but slightly more reassured now. will let you know the result.

I will give you the bad news that everyone else seems to be delaying, your engine is probably dead, to me it sounds like you have left it way too late and my guess is that you have a blocked oil pickup pipe caused from not servicing for so long, I had a Golf GTi, same miles, same scenario, big end failure, good luck to you my friend but I fear you are too late now
 
fingers crossed. only just finished paying for the car this month (after 48 months!)

Not delaying anything. Just not jumping to conclusions. The engine may be scrap but then again it may not.

We had a Vw Passat 2.0tdi that had the oil pressure light come on (due to a very common oil pump drive rounding) and the owner continued to drive to the point where the turbo seized solid, he lost servo assistance for his brake (the vacuum pump relies on oil pressure) and it generally sounded rough. New oil pump drive and turbo and you would never have know he drove it for miles with no oil pressure. As far as I know, it's still going and taking fares. So it's not always doom and gloom.

This does sound like another victim of Audis variable servicing schedule though. Service every year ftw!

Sometimes you get lucky, I wasnt and it was my own fault but I will say a little prayer for him tonight and hope its good news for the guy

fingers crossed the flush does it. You ideally should have done 4 oil changes in the time you have had none
I'd revert to changing the oil every 6-8 k for a good while because each change will pick up more crud until eventually she is clean enough to run tidily.
 
So we have the result..

Engine is fine... phew...

However, wheel bearing needs replaced which might explain the noise I described. Is this just a coincidence?

Many thanks for all your advice and comment. I leave with more knowledge and hopefully a car with a few more miles left in her.
