Few probs with my AUM.

Hey guys. My car hasn,t been running too great lately, last week it cut out when approaching junctions.
It had the fault code MAF signal too low. I bought a new MAF from GSF the middle of the range one. Fitted it today, reset the ECU, erased the codes.

It felt fine, then i gave it some beans in 3rd and it hesitated like mad about 3.5k and the light on the dash came back on. Only seemed to hesitate in 3rd i think, maybe 2nd too.

When i got home i scanned it again, it said MAF signal to high. Arghhhhhh!

Whats goin on here!! Could it be a boost leak? I,m pretty sure the car has a boost leak as it hisses like a mofo.

If anyone can help me with this issue that would be great as i,m not too familiar with these engines yet.

A list of the scan results would be helpful... to get the bigger picture

Also... list spec of engine and mods (assuming you have these) as need to know if we are dealing with a std car or a big turbo monster... makes a difference...

By middle of the range do you mean a pattern part and not a Bosch one? If its not a Bosch one then replace it with a Bosch one before going any further...

MAF Signal too high can appear from a dodgy MAF or a dodgy remap... there is a diagnostics table that maps airflow to load/rpm and if measured airflow exceeds this then this fault code comes up... this table gets lifted in some remaps to prevent this as mods can raise the airflow in areas that this table deems an issue...

But as I said, full scan of fault codes and an idea of car spec will help

Hey Tuffty, the codes are 16486 MAF sensor signal too low p0102 static- no define, 18010 Power supply terminal 30 voltage too low p1602 static- no define. Then after i replaced the standard Bosch MAF with this one AIR MASS SENSOR 187VG0130 i got 16487 MAF signal too high p0103 Static-No define

Car is standard apart from a Forge DV. 103k on the clock.

It's not a matter of defective or breaking down, but it is filthy / dirty (not easy to clean). You can check functionality by making a log in [01-engine], [meas.blocks-08], group 003 (3e gear, full throttle, from 1700-4000rpm)

Special Notes

If multiple Control Module have Power Supply Faults stored, it's most likely to be one common Problem like the ones shown above. Otherwise when only one or two Control Modules have such Codes stored you better start searching at the individual Power Supply of these Modules.

Terminal 30 means unswitched battery power that is supplied even when the ignition is off. This is not referring to any physical terminal numbered 30.

Thats your fault codes... the 18010 code normally comes up if the battery has been low or removed (see this a lot after flashing maps) so unless its come back after the reset I wouldn't worry about it...

I can't tell what make the MAF is from that but the fact the other is 130 quid over the 54 quid of the one you have this suggests its a pattern part not a genuine Bosch sensor... send it back as faulty and get it swapped for a genuine Bosch sensor... pattern parts are notorious for not reading correctly... the ECU is calibrated to Bosch sensors and pattern MAFs are just rubbish...

I had the same (AUM) mines mapped in 3rd I would be pulling nicely then a massive flat spot for a second or 2 checked vagcom no codes but I logged the maf, it seemed too low soooo I went to a cupra breaker bought a used maf (bosch) stuck it on and the light came on after a few miles, checked with vagcom, it said signal too low on the maf, back to mr cupra I went, got a replacement off him all good.....until light on, vag com again signal too high lol, thought ****** it ill put old one back in, nothing logged whatso ever since but still had the power loss, today though I changed the spark plugs (BKR7E for mine mapped, for yous un mapped BKR6E) and my flat spot has gone.....totally pulls right through, giving rather nice smiles, best £2.50 per cylinder ive spent lol :) .

Ok I know your light is on mine wasn't (just saying) listen to tuffty tho the cheap maf's are crap....really really crap and that's a unanimous crap form all on this forum I think. There are some things you can cut back on, a maf unfortunately isn't one of them.
 
Hey Cjs, thanks for the info. I have actually bought some of those plugs, but i haven,t fitted them yet as i dont have a plug socket that small.

Well i cleaned the TB today and checked the engine for leaks around the intercooler. Couldn,t find any tho. Going to pressure test it.

Well i will be sending that MAF sensor back if you guys reckon they,re crap. So i should just go for the Bosch one then?

hmmm so either my wiring is faulty or my brand new MAF sensor is faulty

Hi mate, tuffty is like the all seeing all knowing on here lol So whatever he says go with it lol.

Anyways l had the same exact issue on a 2002 AUM. Totaly standard. The only slight difference l had was when i gave it some my traction control light would come on. So done injector cleaner twice, new bosch maf, throttle body clean reset all codes. All was good for 2 days then CEL back on. The huge flat spot had gone and no traction light coming on anymore, but a CEL. MAF fault code and system to lean code. People were advising o2 sensor. Then l found a thread about boost leaks. I bought myself some easy start spray and went about spraying all the vac hoses.

Bingo !!! 2 inch hole on 1 of the breather hoses under the metal plate at the inlet manifold. £33 later from the stealers, fitted myself with a whole lot of hassle.. Its been a week and no CEL, no trac light, pullng nice, holding boost :)

Although still slightly hunting at idle :( May be because its 11 years old....

Point is, try all the diy stuff first then start shelling out cash if you need to. I prob saved at least a couple of hours labour by investigating the leak myself. Hope any of this is helpful as its really annoying !!
