I was looking at some specs of different models of A3 8L and thought that the diesel models would be a lot heavier. Specs on every site say that the diesel (pd130) weighs 1175kg kerb weight and the 1.8t weighs 1145kg kerb weight.

So are the diesel models only around 30kg heavier? I thought they would be at least 100kg between the two!

the diesel engine is completely cast iron, so the only weight addition really is the cylinder head over the alloy 20v head. Everything else mechanically is probably very similar

truth be told, those weights arn't correct anyway, unless they're totally dry weights with nothing in at all, no fuel, no fluids, no spare tyre etc etc.

realistic weight for a 1.8T FWD is around 1220-1240Kg

The PD engines have aluminium heads, at least every one I have rebuilt has, and all transverse ones should be the same.

I very much doubt the pd130 A3 weighs 1175kg. I have a golf MK4 PD 130 as my daily drive and I put it on a weighbridge and got just over 1310kg.

The non PD will be a fair bit lighter. The extra weight in the PD130 is partly in the larger head with the rockers, and unit injectors. The rest is in the 6 speed box, bigger clutch, flywheel, much heavier driveshafts, CV's, brake discs etc. Basically everything is beefed up to handle the torque!

Weird, i have one sat next to my car in the garage, i swear its all iron.

Anyway, who gives a **** why a diesel is heavier than a petrol. Whats the actual point in the post

Sure its a PD head? Stick a magnet on it!

100kg is A LOT of weight.

And as Prawn says, those figured are wrong anyway.
