FIRST AUDI ! NEED HELP ASAP PLEASE !

Its nice for a PFL that is that the one thats located in manchester ??

I was looking at buying that for a daily driver and havin the TQS as my weekend toy !!

depends on if your competent enough to do the jobs yourself as youll save on labour costs, as parts could be had second hand on the cheap, might just want a good service ??

do the 1.9TDI engines have the same design oil pump as the 1.8T ?? May just want a pump or they may just be being picky to hide a more severe problem so they hook you in to the tappet noise ??

Right just had another once over the listing and it mentions a RECENT cambelt change i suspect the timing may not be correct on the diesel pump hence why there selling it thinking theres more of a problem (just a thought)

end of the day if you want the car and have the basic of car diy/cash then go for it it may be something or nothing end of the day its a derv and those engines are bulletproof !

That is a possibility !, And that is very true, I have offered a much lower price for the car on the presumption that it might cost me a fair bit to fix it and I have told the seller this too, also the car has been up for sale for months, so maybe he might just want rid now.

Id go for it its noce spec for a PFL and you could even FL the centre console and replace the boot if theres a way round the boot lock and throw a private plate on and no one would every no lol (well except us B5 junkies :w00t:)

Sorry, what is a PFL and a TQS ?

All the work would have to be carried out by a garage.

I don't know. I really hope it isn't anything serious :(

they have not got the same design of pump up as the 1.8t ive not came across a TDi with a gunged up pump yet..
Ive got the A4 fwd avant with the same engine that's 5k shy of a qtr of a million miles and still pulls fine with no smoke.

Ive also had a passat 110 with just shy of 300k that pulled like a train and then went on to be an airport taxi for 2 years and is still in daily use by the taxi company owner as a daily. I have seen them doing 600k ( a few of my mates are taxi drivers)

these engines if regularly serviced are pretty bomb proof..
the only time ive ever seen one being noisy was when it had old s*ity oil in it. after a oil flush and some good oil in it it was back to being fine. ( you could hear the difference almost instantly )

as for the injectors it could be a possibility but again any good diesel injector specialist would check these over.
and also repair them for not to much cash.

could be a worn cam but at 166k it would need to have been run on crap for a long time I wouldn't suspect this.

to be honest if it was an avant and a bit closer up north I would have took a punt at it myself

It is my favourite colour ( red ), has full service history, its quattro and returns high mpg and looks awesome !, Sorry but I'm not very clued up on B5's yet, I would have to add a few modifications though haha !

A :(

PFL = pre facelift
FL= facelift
TQS= turbo quattro sport

as stated above if the timing is out a touch it will chatter like mad. this could also be the problem
it just needs to be out a wee bit on the pump and it can make it sound as if the engines knackered.

I once got asked to look at a mk4 golf where it sounded as if the engine was ready to jump out.
I asked when it started doing it " after my mate done the timing belt on it for me" was the response..
all I did was advance the pump timing a touch by loosening the 3 bolts and adjusting the shaft tightened it back up an then got him to start it.. it was running perfect

Feeling much better about this now :) I am going to go for it, providing my dad allows me to, which I think he is warming to after I showed him a few extra's I will be adding :p . Well from where I live it is a 3 hour drive, but it is the only one that completely meets the criteria of what I am looking for, so I may aswell go and check it out :)

Thank-you, I will go check it out providing my offer is accepted then I will let you know how it goes :)

Thank-you for your input guys, it has been greatly appreciated !

I will let you know what happens :)

Just spoke to the guy again, and he said the noise is just a constant tapping, does this help figure out what is is ?

Thanks Tez

if it was me I would give it a an oil flush then use a good oil in it
lift the rocker cover off it and check the cam lobes for wear.
they have hydraulic tappets so it could be crap oil in them.

the injectors could be the problem but ive never had to change an injector within the last 10 years of running vag TDi's
the only time I ever seen one giving a bad tapping sound was an old m3 golf estate.

I bought it cheap because of the sound from it ( a garage told him it wasn't worth fixing )
I got it drove it home and gave it a flush and oil change and this cured it.
the car was with me for another 18 month and I recently seen it on gumtree for £900 described as a great runner.
truth be it I was tempted to buy it back!!
black MK3 golf tdi estate with full leather heated front seats electric windows all round and went great
I regretted selling it only reason it got sold was I was in the middle of getting married and needed the cash and had another 2 cars sitting.

Right this sounds good, so hopefully it won't cost me much to fix.

Basically I have got him down to £750 but it has no mot or tax, and I have to collect it from Cardiff which is about 4 hours away.
So I would have to pre book the car in at a garage in Cardiff :\
