Getting back on the road

May have a sticky lifter... have see that before when an engine has been left a while... normally goes once warm or once its had a chance to heatsoak and get oiled

Lifters on these engines are pretty robust...

<tuffty/>

i hope it is the lifter as the guy who's doing the work said it ain't a major deal to put right

get a gauge on the oil pressure.. Confirm its got decent pressure...
Thats the first thing I would be doing.

hydro followers need pressure to pump up..
not to say the follower has gone wrong, it can happen, but never yet seen it on a 20v come thru here tho.

My mate will be back on it later today/tonight so will check the pressure then, the other lifters are fine bill would that suggest oil pressure is fine ?

what sort off oil pressure should the engine have ?

on cold cranking, std weight oil, I would want to be seeing 40-60psi on idle until it warms up where it would drop down to 20-30 when hot

fast idle it would >90psi

cheers bill my mate will be getting the gauge on it as soon as he has some free time in the garage, bill with all other lifters fine would that say pressure is fine and just a dodgy lifter or would just slightly low pressure cause just one lifter not to pressurise ?

Got a text from my mate, says he changed the lifter and the engine sounds a lot better he says their is still a ever so slightly tappety but I'm sure I've heard a few s3s sound like that,I will need to hear it for my self when I'm home on the 12th I just can't wait to drive the thing :)

That's the beautiful sound of a VAG 1.8T.

Even on GT5 when you buy an S3 and start it up in the garage it sounds like that ;) bagofnails

as westy says, they have loud top ends anyway.
Im sure after a few days of running and heat/pressure cycles in the lifters they will be ok.

Glad to see youve sorted it mate and once again sorry that one has failed :(

Had been meaning to text or call you to catch up but kept putting it back due to moving and decorating related tasks

Did your friend check oil pressure in the end?

If the engine has been sat a while the followers are always noisy... tends to disappear once its had a few heat cycles through them

haha now you mention it on gt5 they do lol

my mate says all it needs now is some mileage on it :)

My mate says its nothing to do you Stacey says its just one of these things,I was ment to text or call you to mate but been busy at work.

i don't know exactly mate but I'm sure he would have done I'm away at work just now not home till next Thursday :-(

I believe the new engine has a slightly different compression ratio and a large port head where as the last one had a small port, will the car still be ok to drive on the existing map for the time being ??

I had a revo stage2 and changes from small port to large, and OE mani to XS. The only thing to keep an eye on is the injector duty as more air/flow will require more fuel. My injectors were at 95% and I temporarily fitted a 4 bar FPR till I had it mapped. The timings in my sig were from that stage2 map.

I have a 4bar fpr from Stacey so if I fit that it should be ok for now ?

Just check with VCDS first mate. No point putting any extra strain on your fuel pump.

I have a spreadsheet calculator for duty cycle if you want me to email it to you. PM me your email address and I'll send it over then you can do some logs and dump it in to see what's happening.

I was advised by Kim @ QST that tge MTM kit runs with a 4 bar reg so may be worth checking yours as may already have one ;)

Id be looking to check that your pumps alright and be considering an inline for the sake of £200 to protect the investment

is it straight forward enough to fit a inline pump along with the in tank one ?

with the plug and play fittings an inline can be located in stock filter location and filter located up front in engine bay

Got the car back today and all seems good :),my mate put around 30 miles on it threw the week and I've done around 50 miles this morning :) so a few more miles tomorrow then it's a oil and filter change.

just glad it's back running again but still a few niggles to sort out tomorrow the clutch pedal ain't got any feel to it so sort that and some engine covers.then I'm just waiting on a transition inlet manifold gasket to arrive and that's it for the time being till I get a custom map

Got some more miles on the clock this morning then went for a oil and filter change and used a bit more of the rev range and the car seems to pull a little harder dont know if it just because I ain't drove it in a while or it actually is.

Went out for some petrol and took the laptop with me and logged block 002 and the max g/s I seen was 207 the car feels a lot stronger than this it feels like it pulls a little harder to me than before and that's in this warm weather to,could this be a knackered maf as it was lying about in the garage for a bit during the engine swap over period or could it be just dirty ??.

Well had the car back on the road for a few weeks now and all seems fine apart from a noisey release bearing always something :(.also fitted a s2000 filter just for a change and the car seems a bit better for it but I'm sure it's all in my head lol

The car is pulling well despite having low g/s readings the other week.i had a play with a 59 plate focus rs a few nights ago from 60-150 he pulled about 2/3 car lengths on me and we pulled in had a chat and he was saying that he has had a uprated intercooler and bluefin remap and reckons his rs is between 340/350bhp and said if his was still standard I would have easily pulled on him so I was happy with that still waiting on a chance to race a e46 m3 hopefully soon as I've been waiting ages haha.

i got my transition inlet gasket deliverd today and fitted it today as well despite spending half a hour wondering how it wasn't coming off until tuffty and bill pointed out the support bracket.

Still planning on a custom map, catch can and possibly wmi but just enjoying having it back for the time being :)

I ordered some 993 two piece discs as was told if I get them and use my my existing bell it would fit I got the discs from 911 desing if anyone has the same discs 320x32 mtm brake upgrade

Got a new dv to charge pipe hose deliverd this morning got that fitted as the old one had been chaffing on part of the block and rubbed through so i used the old hose to protect the new hose to prevent this happening again, and also some led side lights and lost half the skin on my fingers lol

Was bored earlier so to the jetex filter off for a clean and it was thick with crud so stuck the s2000 cone on and I remembered I had a head shield in the cupboard I had for ages from when I had my first s3 so fitted that too.its a lot better with the shield on as the maf is rock solid now unlike before.i took the car out for a drive and it feels even better than before I noticed I had a split in the DV hose.

Could this have been a leak I have had for a while and not really noticed it until it got really bad and the new hose has made the big difference or has the heat shield clean filter and steady maf added a bit aswell ??

Every little helps, they will all have helped with things, steady maf is a big one, might have steadier and more consistent and higher maf readings now.

Glad to hear all things are going well, just need to get that map booked to finish everything off hey?

Why are you blasting around doing 150mph when you've not had the map sorted?

Are you trying to make the new engine look like the old one?

yes mate it's just getting the time just now as I'm away at work for 17 days and then home for 3 so don't get much time just now but I definitely going to get it at some point hopefully soon
