RS3 Upgraded Brakes how?

Helloo,

Basically looking at upgrading my brakes and im aware i can upgrade the calipers to the S3 ones, But would like to go one step further.

Im looking at purchasing some RS3 disks and calipers - but am unsure as to wheather they will fit my car? (Compatability and any modifications needed :/ ?)

A3 2.0 TDi.

Also what type of rear brake upgrades have people done on here?

Im not looking at spending big money, so would like to see what you guys can help me with

I had the stock S3 brakes on my S3 for close on 3 years and they never really bothered me too much. Given I had a fair bit more BHP than you, I would question (other than how awesome the Rs3 brakes look of course) why you need the 370mm discs and the 4 pot calipers on a TDi........

I upgraded to the Rs ones this weekend and they are amazing but at the same time, not cheap. All in 1k+ inc fitting. They fitted straight on mine, but in terms of wheel clearance, that is an issue. Even with 19's, most you will need a spacer..........

Hey yeah mainly for looks and that fact i know it will be a better set up than "the norm"

I have 18" alloys so i think the alloys will clear the disks, my main concern is getting it all onto the car as the kit im looking at doesnt come with carriers...

Would i be able to customize my current carriers or would i need RS3 carriers on, and how much are these?

There are two sets on Mk5 Gti at the moment and both have carriers.......one of which is below.

Audi TTRS RS3 Front Calipers with carriers, price drop £400

If they dont come with carriers, the carriers are approx £100 from N8/Dave B (from memory).

Remember that the discs are 400+ from Audi a pair - and these are not the fancy AP racing ones that are even more ££. In terms of clearance, i was not concerned by the discs - the callipers are massive. To give you some perspective, My 19" CH's 8J Et50 dont fit over them. Even with a 10mm spacer...... the clearance is less than 1mm hence why I will be using a 12mm spacer when i fit these wheels. My rotors fit fine but thats more due to the design.

Plenty to think about before opting for the "pretty" option!
 
i almost bought a set, tell me james how much of a improvement they are over standard s3 brakes?
 
From my limited use so far, they feel more progressive and just feel super capable. I know the RS guys will mock and say they are "poor" but coming from the S3 setup, they are very impressive.

yeah i know, but in my opinion 8pots are just too much even 6pots from gt3 are too much. these seems to be good oem upgrade that improves performance and doesn't cost a fortune!
 
Whats the overall internal diameter minimum needed on the inside of the wheel would you say james? Think they would fit in OEM s3 alloys? Thinking of going for them hmmm
 
Dude - its not the internal diameter thats the issue. Its the shape/design of the rear of the spokes. So the wheels will (probably!) fitover them, but you won't be able to bolt them down as the back of the spoe hits the face of the calliper.

If i get time this weekend, I will take a front wheel off and try a std 8p S3 alloy with a 10mm spacer that i have. I will then try and work out how much extra spacer would be needed.

I can understand you wanting the RS3 front discs if you want the look, they do look good being 370mm and all.

I've spent quite a bit of cash on brakes over the past few years and if its braking performance you are after I think you can do better with aftermarket upgrades. The RS3 discs aren't that special, the metal hub heats up quickly and they fade quickly on track. After a day of track use they were warped. The 'holes' fill up badly with brake dust too and as a result they tend to glaze the pad.

If it was my money I'd rather buy something like the AP set up with proper grooved floating rotor discs on ceramic hubs - much better heat and pad material dissipation.

They are pricey of course and there are many other good options, EBC, Brembo, Performance Friction etc out there at every price level. Match the weight and power of your car to the disc and pad and you will be amazed how good the stopping power is.

Just my thoughts and as I say I can understand people wanting the look of the RS3 disc but for braking performance there are better.

cool might be after market i go for in the future then, AP racing or APS you mean? brembos silly money haha!
 
I have the AP racing 362mm discs on my RS3 from Dave at VAgbrembtechnic - I'd highly recommend these.

The Brembo 'high carbon' discs also work well. There is a solution for every price range.

like look of ap racing 6 pots, dont know tho if 6 pot a bit over kill for s3, what u recon? i got stage 1 now and fancy a bit more out the breaks, maybe stage 2 it in future once im used to 1st one haha.
