Hi all,

Recently had a problem where when I give it some beans in 2nd/3rd/4th, and go over say 4000rpm, then change up, I get a cloud of smoke coming from the back, until I lift off..
Any idea's what it could be?

Cheers

Edit: I should probably mention its a 1998 1.8T.

Are you saying you're changing up before lifting off?

Of do you mean you get the smoke as you lift off before changing up?

Is the smoke white or have a blue tinge?

I'm thinking broken or sticking piston rings, stem seals or turbo seals. Mainly blue smoke.

I think it's black smoke. It only happens when I get high up into rev range then change gear, say pulling off slip road onto motorway. I'll be in 3rd @4000+ rpm, change gear and get a plume of black smoke. Then for the next few seconds there's a little more black smoke then it goes away.

What would cause excess fuel to be pumped through, or unburned fuel? Spark plug?
What would be the signs of a turbo going bad? Would this do that? (the turbo has no issues as far as i'm aware but a friend said it could be that).

Oil. Potentially either rings, turbo seals, or your PCV system. Worth whipping the hose to the TB to see how oily it is.

It's happened again. I got to about 4000r/pm, and then all of a sudden lost power and plumes of blue/white smoke everywhere.
Lifted up bonnet too and, from the back of the engine (where the turbo is situated) the same colour smoke was seeping out.

Anyone got any ideas?

Lol, fair enough. Is it a hard job to get done? I guess it's a garage job at very least.
Is there any way to make sure that's the problem? like, compression tests etc.

Cheers,

Not sure how to definitely confirm it, best off speaking to Dan ( beachbuggy), he'll know

a standard garage is likely to subcontract a job like that out to a specialist, which Dan is

Okay cool. I've messaged him. I'm thinking if it IS a turbo issue, I might just replace with a KO3S.

Why is it a bad idea to buy one of the copies?
