Hi all, just to make you all aware of a very clever scam that's just cost me 3600 ******* quid, I was after a pickup, found one on Autotrader, contacted the seller who said it was also on ebay and it would be easier for them if I bought through ebay via their buyer protection scheme, they sent me the link and I started the process.
I was sent what looked like 100% authentic ebay documentation via email, and asked to deposit funds into a holding account, (the document states that monies will be held until I am satisfied with my purchase which was going to be delivered, and only then will money be released to the seller) I was suspicious so clicked a link and emailed what I thought was the ebay buyer protection helpline who assured me (in another ebay authentic document) that every thing (both seller and vehicle) checked out and it was safe to proceed. I even checked the sellers feedback reviews on their account which all worked exactly how a genuine ebay seller account would)

DO NOT DO THIS GUYS !! Ebay only does Paypal (so I have since found out) my money is gone and the pickup does not exist, I even HPI'd the truck on the basis of the Reg on the ad, these ***** have got that covered, the vehicle checked out, but I suppose they just nicked another ad.

I am now 3600 quid lighter and p****D off and truckless, please be careful, I don't consider myself to be a mug, but I feel like one now, the police said this is big and the bad boys are getting more and more clever.

Hopefully my experience may help others not to get caught like this.... Regards and still F*****D off, Rob

Had a elderly gentleman come into work last week (I work for a bank) and same thing happened to him, poor git never stood a chance and worst thing is the bank csnt do ****.

No, that's the trouble, because you willingly send the money the bank wont cover it, like I said you live and learn, cash only from now on !!!

you really fell for that
its been all over the net for the past 6 mth

you never thought to call ebay ?
or look on your ebay for a buyer protection that they have never done

Gutted for you dude. I thought it was pretty clear when dealing with ebay or other websites, always go through the website itself NEVER by emails sent to you. Internet providers should do more to make sure people are aware of this kind of scam. Defo not a mug, i posted a while ago about another scam a friend got stung by.

Do you have any leads or contact details that the police are able to work with?

****** hell mate not good sorry to hear what's happened ********* ain't they hope you get it sorted some how .... On the plus side ya car looks mint

Got their bank details but I suspect that was opened with a dodgy passport, I have put it behind me, nothing else I can do, just hope others don't get caught out.

Been a lot longer than 6 months!
I was tempted by an RS4 about 5 years ago. Alleged right hand drive UK car, owner working in Frankfurt & all that jazz.
I was working in Mexico at the time & planned to fly back via Frankfurt & if all was good, buy it there & drive home.

I got the same stuff from them claiming the monies would be held by Paypal & released to them after I was satisfied.
Suspicious, I asked for the reg & VIN number to do an HPI check, they said no need as it was going to transported to my door & I would have 2 weeks to check it out & providing I was happy, the funds would be released.
Once again I asked for the details for an HPI check to save me a lot of hassle & provided I was happy I would hand over cash & drive the car back to the UK myself.
Again I was met with the exact same response, which was when they promptly were told to Fk right off the scamming Bstards!

One thing to note, even if it is a link to a lookalike site, it's obvious from the address bar at the top if it's the real deal or no.

Yeah for sure, didn't think of that at the time AAAAAAGGGHHH !!

Well, these scumbags are getting better at it all the time.

I'm sure more & more people get taken in all the time. Small consolation, but you won't be the last I'm sure.
If it makes you feel any better, these guys made a mission of wasting the scammers time, & costing them money too hopefully...
