Car decided to spit out a lot of dark smoke on the way home Sunday evening. Stopped and called the AA, got towed home. Looked at the car yesterday, seems to have dispatched all of the oil somewhere as it has no oil in it now. The car won't turn over and when it does (with a battery booster pack) it revs itself up to 3000rpm and back down again and repeats. When I rev the car myself it kicks out a lot of white smoke and I mean a ****** lot :(

Any ideas on what the problem could be!?

Help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like the turbo, I wouldn't be starting it mate get it towed to a garage ASAP. I had same happen to me on my old a3 dumped all the oil into exhaust and intercooler.

im getting a compression tester put on it tomorrow. Is that going to bring up anything? I'm worried its going to be something worse like a cracked piston or ring failure :( because there was a horrible noise coming from inside the engine when I shut the car off, kinda sounded like a bit of metal bouncing/spinning around loosely

Tell me you didn't turn it over with all the oil dropped out, isn't that like 4 turbo's now?

Is your car stock as that's a fair few turbo's to go in 2 years.

Sorry for your issues, but we have a brand new turbo boxed if interested.

i may have turned it over without oil in it as the AA bloke didn't think that was a problem. It wasn't until I woke up the next day I checked the oil level :( do you think the turbo could cause all of this? Or it's something else? I'm going to put some oil in it tomorrow before the compression test

Best just go get a diagnostic scan on it mate but it does sound like the turbo has gone and if you've been trying to start it with no oil in then you may have caused further damage but fingers crossed you haven't.

i have the turbo on warranty at my local Audi garage. So if I get it on the back of a recovery truck and taken there, do you think that's a good idea? And if I've done more damage surely that's caused because of the turbo so they should repair all damages because the turbo is at fault...

yea I'd take it back there if its under warranty, but I certainly wouldn't be saying that you tried to turn it over because if you have done more damage to the engine then that would of been as a result of you trying to turn the engine over without oil in it. Anyway hope that it is just the turbo then at least it's covered under warranty.

Just don't tell them you turned it over & if its from an audi dealer, then definitely go back to them, don't bother putting oil in just get it to the dealer & don't start it again.

okay. Thank you for your replies, much needed and I won't be telling them I tried to turn it over haha. Just hope it is the turbo as that's the only part covered on warranty, as the original warranty has run out

the only thing I'm worried about is if it isn't the turbo, then it's stuck 30 miles away from my home and obviously not drivable :(

I've checked the egr valve and when I rev the car, the smoke comes out of the breather pipe. Maybe ring failure or a cracked piston??? Anyone had this before?

after been told not to start it you have ?
thats just silly

AA most know **** all
1 tried to start my car when the oil preasure light was on saying it wouldnt hurt to drive 200+ miles home
if audi supplied and fitted the turbo id be on the phone to them to get it recoverd.
they will tell you about charges for looking if it isnt the turbo tho.

i'm gonna put a litre of oil in it today and do a compression test as quick as possible to see if it is something else... I don't want it to get all the way to Audi and find out its not the turbo

People are trying to help you. If I was you I would listen to their advice, stop trying to convince yourself you know it's something else after the help you have been given.

Chances of it being a piston or piston ring is pretty small.

I too am +1 for turbo.

the person who is advising me to do the compression test is a mechanic and a good one at that... He had the same problem with his car before, so I'm not going against anyone's advise on here. I'm just trying to cut down the options before its too late :(

I notice you said it is producing a lot of white smoke that's a good indication of coolant/water head failure or oil cooler but as for your oil disappearing that's slightly odd

And the noise it was making didn't sound good at all :( my mechanic has said he thinks it's ring failure or a cracked piston. As when this happens the car dispatches all the oil every time you put some in

Some people on this forum are mechanics, such as myself. What makes the mechanic you know a good mechanic?
The smoke coming out your exhaust could be where the turbo has sucked the oil out the engine and is burning off in the exhaust.

Same thing happened to my dads 170 A3. The turbo's on these cars are common to failing so there are a lot of fellow owners with this experience a quick search will bring up many other threads with the same symptoms leading to turbo failure
