it could be a few things like a fuel issue or possibly a engine coolant temp sensor but you really need to have your car scanned to sav the guesswork

When did it last have a new battery?

Solved my starting issues despite the battery testing fine down at the local battery place. These cars are particularly fussy it seems.

Quite agree I need to replace mine it failed the load test but starts ok but I think I could be responsible for some of my niggles dam it's only 8 years old.

Had battery and alt checked all fine.Had car scanned crankshaft sensor fault had that changed.

I don't think a dodgy/ miss reading cts will generate a code I would get a graph run or just change it as they are fairly cheap and very easy to replace or could run a graph of it on vcds .

Get a Varta Silver in there. I went from being so unsure as to almost not order the thing to being totally gobsmaked when I installed it. Can't believe the old battery was supposed to have been OK. Starting was totally transformed.

Sort it now before it fails. Saw a German couple just yesterday in a carpark with a 2005 A4 with an AA man trying to jumpstart them.

As for 8 years, my battery was only 4 years old! Another shortlived piece of Bosch kit in a VAG car!

Thanks will look into the battery side of things later in the week. Will post any updates

It turns out the problem with the non starting was a broken retaining clip on the cable to the starter motor.

I have a similar problem with my 2003 A3 2.0FSi. Starts from cold fine but as soon as the engine is warm it will take 3 or more turns to fire and runs lumpy for a second or two. I had 3 fault codes recently, the camshaft position sensor, the oxygen sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. Replaced the cheapest (camshaft sensor) but problem still persists. Hope it isn't the NOx sensor because they're £500+!!! Recent work has included: new rad, water pump and cam-belt. On another thread I did have a recommendation that I replace the crankshaft sensor. I'm reluctant to pay for a scan if the results aren't definitive and can't be relied on. Can anyone explain how a broken clip on a starter motor cable can affect starting only when the engine is warm / hot?
