Michelin Pilot Sport 3's??

Hi,

Does anybody else have these tyres fitted to their A3? Due for two new one's but just wondered if you guy's could recommend a better/cheaper tyre?

A lot of people on this forum rave about Conti Sport Contact 5s being the best but I know they are not cheap. Spoke to a tyre fitter who says he has been in the job over 20 years. I believe him as I live up the road from the shop and remember him as a kid! He told me he can supply Conti SC5 but he has seen a lot of problems with side wall failures on Contis in general.

Surprised at that because i've heard a lot of guy's recommending the conti's. I don't think you can go wrong with the Michelin's anyway. At the end of the day ya pay for what you get.

When i bought the car its got a budget Tyre on the rear and can't wait get rid it look's s@#t!

Goodyear F1A2s are great and usually cheaper than the contis/ps3s.

I was stuck between Michelin PS3's and Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and after nearly reading through all posts on the forum I ended up getting the F1's.

I also checked out tyrereviews.co.uk and the F1's had a much higher rating in grip, wear and overall than the PS3's. After all camskill is now doing them on special offer for £109 I believe with £10 fuel voucher per tyre if you purchase 2+.

You can't go wrong as said with premium tyres no matter what brand but generally I chose the F1's due to their price and rate.

Just looking at tyres myself and having the same debate.

I'm thinking either: goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 2 or vredestein ultrac sessanta. Both seem to get really good reviews both on here and on tyre reviews.
The vredestein are on offer at £86 from camskill at the min, don't know if that might swing the deal for me?

its a shame, Kwik fit have had an offer this month on good year tyres.

I actually did and was about to go with them however I ordered 4 F1's costing total £437 (£40 fuel voucher) making it £397 plus £30 for fitting!

It's easier to book in with kwikfit and places luck such but if your bothered to get them online and take them down for fitting comes out cheaper.

Got them on mine, absolutely love them, had awful dunlop sport maxx on the back and autogrips on the front when i bought the car and was the worst driving car I've owned when it had them on.

Michelins are quiet, grippy (im 20 and its lowered, you can tell what i get up to), its comfy, they wear quite well, all the abuse i give them and they last as long as my mums do on her a3, i personally wouldn't have anything else.

IMO (before i get slated by anyone who has them) i have had vredesstein twice on two different cars and i thought they were poor in the dry and in the wet i was gutted as people were raving about them,Mich ps3's are a good tyre but i thought they wore quick,conti's are good but very soft so good grip but quick wear rate,i am going to try uniroyal rain sports as mates have them on high power jap cars evos+impreza's and they are impressed and have had them a while with no issues up to now plus a bit cheaper than the michelins.

Good years and dunlops have had on previous cars and they were pretty good

My last set of tyres were uniroyal rainsports - this time round I put on the new 2013 Pirelli Pzero's. Pirellis were the same price and are better both in dry and wet..

I have PS3's.....on my second set now and really got along with them well.

Will not be going back to Pirelli which is what I was on before Nero and the Rosso I have used.

May try out the F1 Assy 2s next though or the Michelin Pilot Super Softs which have recently become available in my wheel size

Can't say I remember any noticeable difference concerning additional road noise with them tbh. I tried out different sets of Pzero Rosso's and Pzero Nero's as well over a good 3 year period.

Every Pirelli tyre has a competitor that performs better than itself and similarly priced.

Plus with recent events at the Silverstone GP - it just endorses the reason on why I switched from Pirelli to Michelin and never looked back

I bought some Eagle Performance and Efficiency which so far seem like quite good tyres. Cost around £540 for four and have quite a good rating for grip and economy

I had 225/45/17 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2 and they were a brilliant tyre, handled brilliantly in the wet couldn't fault them in the slightest, im now on 225/40/18 ContiSportContact 5's, they are also a very good tyre, probably not quiet as good as the F1's in the wet but they don't seem to wear down as quickly, Probably going to go back to the Asymetric 2's on my next set, wouldn't go for anything else imo.

To save a bit of money, anybody reckon it is worth to buy PS3's where's cheapest and then get a Tyre garage to fit them? Seen them on lovetyres for 228 inc delivery but quote from garage was 268 fully fitted for x2?

I don't think i'm gonna get much change from 40 quid on a garage fitting the tyre's will I?

Suppose that's something you will notice in a stage 2 S3! My fully powered 1.4TFSI won't complain with what shoe's it has on :sign_unfair:

I have to say I didn't find much in it between the F1's and PS3s apart from wear rate,and you'd expect mine to skin a set of tyres with poor grip.

I think a lot depends on suspension setup as well,and that can get a lot more out of a set of tyres than you'd think.

Nothing however,will get much out of a set of RE050s.....LOL

Swear by Avon ZZ3's on my S3.....great all round tyre. Might try the ZZ5's when its time to replace.

I've recently gone over to Pilot Supersports,and these are about the closest to a trackday car for the road,that also work in the wet,that I've ever had.

Superb tyre.

I've got the uniroyal rainsports 2 on mine, had a few sets now of them, the grip is excellent in the wet and good in the dry, way better than the pirellis that I had before, Don't last nearly as long however but thats due to mainly driving back roads not exactly slow..

Going to try some PS3's or F1's next due to wanting something that will last a little longer..

Mine are 245x40x 18,but you will have a LOT of trouble squeezing those under your car....we certainly did.

They're also available in 225x40x18 and a good range of 19" sizes as well.

Lifespan.....well,I got around 8 000 miles out of a set of F1s,and these are already looking as if they'll outlast that.

I got shot of the F1s a couple of years back,and went back to Michelin PS3s for winter use,and Toyo R1Rs for summer for a while,and now,after the big suspension rebuild earlier in the year,I've got R888s for summer,and the Supersports for the rest of the year,but honestly,these things are so good,I'll stick with them rather than having tyres that only work properly on a hot dry road.

I did one trackday last year and loved it,but that's what prompted the suspension rethink,as there was too much understeer.

The F1 compound is pretty soft,and they don't last,but they do grip well,however the Supersports have bags more grip,and they last better,so it's a no-brainer.

My car is an everyday drive.

I actually use my current PS3s as my summer tyres and I have a set of Nokian WR A3 tyres on my OEM alloys for my winter usage

Good to hear that you rate the Supersports over the F1s....think I may have to have a stab at these as most of the lads in the 8L section run the F1s or 452s. SS have only become available in 18s pretty recently from what I understand which is why I've never looked into them and I always like going against the norm of what everyone else has.

I think it's perhaps due to the speed rating and load I assume! I went for the 225/40/18 Y 92 XL if it helps

The one which is £103.80 is apparently out of stock and the £10 cheaper one is in stock! Which leaves you to one option lol (if I looked at it correctly)

I have PS3s on my A3 - albeit a 1.9 TDI Sport in 225/45/17 fitment.

I put them on 10k ago and today checked the depths - 4mm on both fronts and 5mm on both rears - not happy.

I don't know how as it is 100% motorway driving and literally 0% town.

Not impressed at the wear rate as they cost me £420 with the £50 fuel voucher.

Will be swapping them around this weekend and will probably not go back to them on this car anyway.

Compare that to my A6 which had PS2 fitted - 255/35/19 the fronts lasted 31k, heavier car, quattro and 50/50 town/m'way driving.

No noise problems at all. Had falkens on a previous car and they were noisy as heck!

The PS3's are a touch noisey, very good grip but not the greatest fuel consumption, will see how they wear, certainly not cheap ! Possibly a bit of paying extra for the reassuring brand going on there. That idea of you get what you pay for etc etc

Ive used Toyos a lot in the past, T1R when I can get them, but they wear pretty quickly, nice drive though. Generally a lot cheaper but not in this size. 25/40/18 92 Y XL

I'm tempted by Kumhos and Falkens which come in quite a bit cheaper but once again may not last very long.

There are Yokos of course too

next time if going more expensive may be tempted by the Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric 2 which claims to have it all
Less noise, same grip and great fuel economy....really ?

When ordering online obviously the price of fitting/balancing etc plus postage, plus hassle factor so add another £50 plus
If you miss the delivery going to the parcel depot can be a pain so add that too.

Have had a few problems where online co's have sent the wrong tyres (they never had them in stock) Oponeo tyres stay clear too good to be true

Ears Motorsport who also run yokohamatyresdirect are doing some great prices with free delivery

I also had PS3s on my A3 2.0TDI. 225/40/18.
Lasted me two seasons. ~25.000Km.
Compared to the PS2s I had before, thes were quite poor. Less grip, more noise, short life.
When I took them off, about a month ago, one of the tires was worn to the metal wires.
Very dissapointed!
Next year I'm going to replace them with something from another brand.
