Iv owned my audi a4 170 Quattro for around 6 months now, fell in love with it at first sight.
First drive I loved it even more!

now its getting depressing.

I always hear people banging on about how crap german reliability is and iv never believe it because iv never had a problem.... until now

Basically when I first got the car, a couple of weeks later, the DPF light came on.. I took it up and down the motorway, which seemed to work as it didn't come on for another 3 month.
Soon as it came back on I knew it was time to remove it.

Had the car in on Tuesday (25th) for DPF removal, EGR delete and remap, went to pick it up and WOW it was unreal!!!

Got it home, had my tea and popped back out, had a little bit of a play down the main road and noticed the speed wasn't climbing.
I stuck it in 3rd and put my foot down... to my horror the revs were climbing really fast. Now we all know that this is the doings of a destroyed clutch.

I tried 4th.. did the same and even in 5th and 6th.
I can drive it but sometimes I have to change gear really early.

This isn't the end of my problems, I knew iv had an oil leak for a month or so, and just yesterday I was told that I had oil in the intercooler :notme:

So basically it looks like ill have £2000 in repairs within the first 6 months of owning it!
Problem is, I'm not on a big wage and I have a car to pay for, my phone bill and rent, not including fuel and food/drink.

Looks as if ill be taking a stinking loan out to get her fixed, really am gutted because all I want to do at this point is get rid of it and I cant :(
Im pouring money into a car that I don't even own

What a pisser!....really sorry to hear your troubles....out of curiosity what engine code do you have on there. I understood the 170's were pretty durable especially in manual form.
Do you have any comeback wae the garage. Could they have f#cked something up while it was in for repair the first time round?

Hope you can get it sorted.

Cheers

These things happen when you remap a car Im afraid. The clutch must of been on its last legs for it to go that quickly after the remap.

There is no come back on the garage that I would see as they would only have removed the right hand wheel and driveshaft and dropped the lower subframe to give the DPF enough room to come out the hole.

Hopefully you can get it sorted on the cheap and get rid of it once and for all.

Tell me about it lol, I don't know much about the engine so I couldn't tell you the code? hah
Its not the garages fault, Im putting it down to a clutch with 100k on it.. I should have seen it coming really.
Car drives amazing after dpf was done, but the simple fact that I cant really drive it with a dodgy clutch :(

Bad times,hope your luck changes

Unlucky mate, but if you can still drive it, maybe you just have to control your right foot until you have enough funds for the repair, instead of taking out a loan to get it fixed, as with the interest you're going to be paying on top, maybe it's worth delaying the repair? You could try and unplug the N75 valve so the car runs less power? Unsure on what effect it will have on fuel economy though, but it's just an idea?

I duno if others can confirm for sure, but apparently u do get some oil residue in the intake system. I've had a mechanic tell me i had oil in mine, i spoke to shark performance and they said this is a common thing on diesels. So maybe the oil in the intercooler isn't as big of a problem as u think it is. The clutch defo is though. I'd consider an SMF conversion, might be worth it given the extra power u have. It does make the whole clutch system heavier but its not that bad.

Iv heard about the oil too, but its quite a considerable amount to be honest.
iv got my eyes on a hybrid turbo, hopefully bring her upto around 230-245 ish, torque is unreal at the minute, especially with being AWD

I was looking at aftermarket clutches as its not far off pricewise, but OEM should be fine if its brand new? surely it can handle the power?

Dont bother fitting an oem one if you are considering a hybrid. You are far better off fitting an uprated clutch and being done with it.

sounds about right.

what are standard clutches able to cope with generally speaking?

That's a bit like how long is a piece of string.

Mine is a 2.0tfsi at stage 2 and has been for nearly 20,000 miles with no clutch slip.

The diesel has more torque and that's what kills the clutch. Don't bother risking it as the remap will be putting more torque through than std and the replacement costs are comparable if you look about.

To be honest, I think most car clutches can take stage1 power, but it all depends on driving style. Quattro is obviously heavier on clutches, but lasting 100k, I'd say not bad.

Well iv looked through car history and I cant find a clutch replacement in there so I thought 100k was good.
its still driveable now, only it starts to slip when it gets upto 3kish.

The torque is unreal and such a nice car to drive now, fuel isn't any better (from what iv noticed) might have to opt for the economy remap if he is kind enough to stick it on.

What's the mileage mate? Mines on 112k ATM so I hope mine ain't on its way any time soon. What figures did u get from your remap? Or didn't you get a dyno done?

I've been thinking about a remap for a fair few weeks now and i did abit of research and read how amazing a remap is better mpg more power none of this egr and dpf problems then a few months down the line clutches and turbos start needing replacing so its put me off having one done as it seems to be a lot of money in the long run

if it makes you feel any better my cambelts just snapped! well looks like the tensioner let go. the cambelt was supposed to have been changed along with tensioner kit and water pump 30k miles and 14 months ago!

Im sorely tempted to accept my car is dead and cremate it!

TO be honest mate, I only got it remapped because it was in with the DPF removal deal, along with egr delete.
I needed dpf done as I had the light on twice, and my turbos on its way out now to.. lol
But its what you expect really as 100k is good for anycar to last without needing something.

Mines on 102k now
Your bound to hit problems but you will end up there at somepoint anyway. sadly

That's a sore mood for you then haha, id be crying if that happened to be honest.

I feel your pain - its all part of 2nd hand car roulette im afraid.

I purchased my A4 at the start of last year, to give a ballpark figure, iv spent around £4000 on repairs (including parts for an engine rebuild) - I decided to stick with it and repair the bits that needed attention (dreaded worn camshafts on the 2.5TDi), dare I say it but I think I have reached the other side of the tunnel now - last 20,000 miles have been trouble-free.
Hoping to keep the car for at least a few more years yet as some of the major components are virtually new (suspension arms, clutch.etc)
I ended up running up the credit card for a few months, but just seemed to be one hit after another.

same situation exactly mate, So far iv spent around 800 and had it less than 6 month.
Im keeping the car for a couple of year, well I have to as im still paying it off aswell as saving for my house deposit
I don't want to have to open up a credit card as it will be something else I need to pay for but I might have too.

Oil in the intercooler doesn't necessarily mean your turbo is on its way out. I have a perfectly health turbo on my a3 2.0tdi 140 but still get oil in my intake system. Get a catch can and attach it to the rocker cover breather and watch the oil disappear. And if you got to an auto factors and talk nicely to the guys they may give you clutch kit on trade, about £350-£400. Then find a local garage to fit which is about £130 ( well was for me anyway lol)
