Good evening folks,

Had a wee shock today driving back from a weekend in Edinburgh, the "check your oil level" light came on (never happened to me before) Changed oil 6k ago (approx 3 months-ish).

After finding a garage to top up with oil, I had a look at the book and it says Audi say roughly 1L per 1000 miles is normal. Now I know that some oil will be used but say for example a car on a long life service interval, would that not mean topping up 10L or so of oil between services? Don't get me wrong I know some oil does get used but can this be right?

Forgot to say It is a diesel 170, but my mk4 diesel golf barely touched it's oil between 6k services.

Thanks
justin

Hi Justin, I've got a 170 too, I've only ever had to top the oil up between services after some numpty never replaced the dip stick correctly.

lol I have to put bang on 1L every 1000 miles (so much so, I use the dash mile counter for it)

They all seem to be different. My mk5 Golf 140 went through phases of drinking oil> There was no rhyme or reason for it.

Dunno about Audi, but with the MK5 Golf VW included a bottle of oil in the boot. That's what the little cubby hole was for. I always carried a litre with me in there. Would do with the Audi but there is no cubby hole.

+1 what chinnyhill10 says.

Some use loads of oil and some don't use any. We had a batch of A3 TDi's at work and some used oil and others didn't. It's all a bit weird, but nothing to worry about. Unless you start seeing patches on the floor or blue smoke from the exhaust.

Just out of interest what does blue smoke indicate? Heard of white smoke being bad but not heard about blue smoke?

Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil; while smoke usually means steam (i.e. the engine or exhaust has condensation in it and the heat is turning it into steam or if it goes on for a while the head gaskets gone and the engine is ingesting its own coolant...)

Ive not had to replace mine and ive done 3000 miles since last oil and filter service, so get under you car and check sump plug also chek turbo oil feed pipe make sure thats not leaking

You get a bottle with a brand new audi so there obviously ment to lose a bit. Don't worry and just do what the book says dont get anything changed or pay someone to look at it. There isn't a problem unless all you out in the top comes out the bottom 5 seconds later. :)
