Changing TDi 170 for S3

Fancy changing my 2009 TDi 170 for an S3.. I really miss petrol engine, even though I did 700 miles this weekend for about £80 on fuel!

Are all S3's 4wd?

Anyone else made this transition?

That £80 will become £240 for an S3 fella when you 1st start using it as the power is addictive, think wisely abot the change, S3 is fun & 4wd yes, but fuel etc costs may cripple some people.

Yea all s3's are quattro, I've not made that transition but I did go from a 1.9tdi to a 2.0tfsi quattro and I've never looked back. So i personally think you wouldn't either if you miss petrol. Just be prepared to make a lot more trips to the petrol station.

You could probably say I have in that I've been through a few diesel Audis(a 2.0TDi A3 followed by an A4 3.0TDi) as well as petrol fed ones.

The S3 uses a Haldex which is essentially part time 4WD,via an electrohydraulic clutch,and as such,it does well,but it's overall handling is pretty strongly biassed to understeer.

Buy it and enjoy it.

You can do a few things to correct the understeer I beleive, uprated ARB, walk and springs, or if you're like me I actually like the feeling of my bum hole getting twitchy as its understeering, your choice, difference froma TDi to an S3 will be night and day, enjoy

I came from a BMW 540i 4.4 V8 to the Audi... and my car history is chequered with many V6's and IL-6's

Fuel isn't really an issue.. just want to enjoy driving again

I think I've done everything possible on that score!

The first and simplest step is to uprate the ARBs.
After that,a decent set of coilovers and uprated bushes,plus an antilift kit(although the latter really doesn't provide a big difference).

Changing to an adjustable Haldex controller is the last step before radical changes such as fully adjustable suspension and camber changes to the front.

In that case,you'll be pleasantly surprised....even when mapped,it isnt to thirsty,which is a real benefit of a small capacity turbo engine compared to an equivalent V8.

Cheers! But I save tinkering to my motorbikes and leave cars alone.. I've spent money on cars in the past and costs way, way too much!

Made some enquiries on one car already, a blue 2007 with about every option ticked I think..

My TDi is an 09, so going to have to go older to keep around the same value.. I don't want black, silver or grey..

They're generally very robust cars,and as I can attest,the engine and transmission are rated well below their limits,with the exception of the manual clutch.
The engine is good for 440lbs torque before needing anything doing internally,and mine has done over 50 000 miles with no serious issues.
