Hey - I know there's another thread on this somewhere but it's 2 years old now :)

So i've got the A4, 57 plate 170bhp version with 83k miles on the clock.

For the past few months i've noticed that i get a bumpy idle however I've been meaning to clean the EGR valve out to see if this will sort it but not got round to it yet. Well actually I did but I ended up getting down to the last bolt on the EGR and stripping it!!

Anyway - about a month ago on the motorway I got a flashing light which looks like a coil but apparently is the glow plug light? Also went into limp mode. I had a quick google while I turned my car off and read that it could be related to a wet footwell, esp if it's raining. It was raining so I put it down to that. It hadn't done it again until last week when I've been commuting home from work, 3 nights in a row, on a slight incline on the M74. No rain to blame either!

I've yet to get this scanned for faults but can anyone from experience tell me what the possible fault could be?

Also when sitting idle at traffic lights, I can smell a strong fuel smell coming from my car. Excess smoke I think - but i'm not sure if that's related.

The car has had the injectors replaced under recall too.

Help :/

Hi. Had similar issues with the glow plug light flashing, exhaust immisions light AND dpf light all on at the same time!

Scanned it (for the life of me i cant remember what it was called) but we replaced a Bosch sensor that is fixed by a single 10mm nut to the bulk head, almost center of windscreen, one electrical plug going to it and two small rubber pipes coming in......

Replaced it, and so far,,,,,,so good! But get it scanned before replacing random sensors, this paticular one was £40

By your description Was the bosch sensor you replaced the pressure sensor for the dpf?

could it be a badly fitted timing belt? A garage has quoted me 50+VAT just to have a look :/

I would be very surprised mate.......Spend the money on a vcds scan...Put a post on here and see if someone locally will scan it for some beer vouchers

not to worry - i've bit the bullet and finally bought a legit cable from NHN :D

Will post up my log tomorrow!

hi all new on here, have 07 2.0tdi 170 quattro same issues as you 5aq1b, rough idle, smokey on warm up burning fuel smell, emissions light and glow plug flashing came on few months back, got it scanned cant remember codes, cleared codes but lights came back on again, they come and go,glow plug light seems to flash whenever my girlfriend drives ie slow ha ha,,for some reason my car doesnt go into limp mode.going to bring it into audi next week for free health check(which i got when i registered with audi.ie)to see what they find.

I had that exact same fault, and it was a cheap fix. It's the vacuum actuator on the inlet manifold. Inside there is a diaphram which splits. you have to replace the whole unit. Only about £10 + another £10 for new gasgets. You will also need a couple of cans of choke cleaner to clean the inlet manifold out while it's off. It's quite an easy job. The unit is used to operate the flaps inside the inlet manifold and when split does not function properly.

Car runs great afterwards

Here is a pic of the part, it is at the top of the engine near the front. If you want part numbers let me know.

This happens to me. I replaced mine. TPS will not sell you the vac pump on its own as they will tell you it's part of the manifold. There is a part number on here somewhere which is the same part but its for a passat. I fixed mine last week end.

Edit
Part number is S03G129061C
Tell TPS that part number and they should say its a vac pump

I actually think I bought this part as part of my EGR Cleaning project (which I never got round to!)

Will check the garage shortly. :)

you getting a lot of smoke too whilst idle? starts to ****** sting my eyes that's how much I'm getting.

now and then, smoke isnt too noticable but if I leave the car sat on the drive idling whilst messing with my RNS-E the smell starts become very noticeable and I have to turn off the car or just drive off ! stings the throat for sure.

exact same symptoms here !

Had the same issue on a 170 brd s-line. If I put my foot down in 6th gear uphill it would go into limp mode & the glowplug light would flash. If you switched it off/on the fault would clear. Did a vacuum test & the inlet actuator (03g 129061C £13 from TPS) wouldn't hold vacuum. You have to remove the inlet manifold to fit the actuator, which is a relatively easy job, & that's when I found how the thick oily deposits had jammed the butterflies that the actuator operates. I cleaned the manifold & fitted the new actuator & now the car goes better than it ever has & it also stopped the lumpy tickover.
