VAGCOM - Knock Sensor problem

I have had a few problems which are pretty well documented on this forum but one consistent issue that I have still been unable to resolve is a fault showing about one of the knock sensors....

16712 - Knock Sensor 1 (G61): Signal too High
P0328 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

When I did the thermostat, I swapped the 2 sensors over to try and see if the fault followed the swap however as you can see, it didn't which would indicate the sensor is ok.

I am a little lost as the only other suggestions are wring related. Has anyone had this before and fixed it? Any suggestions on a way to test and resolve this?

  • Loss of Power
  • Engine Damage
Possible Causes

  • Knock Sensor 1 (G61) Short to Plus
  • Knock Sensor 1 (G61) Open Circuit
  • Knock Sensor 1 (G61) loose
  • Knock Sensor 1 (G61) faulty
  • Engine Control Module faulty
Possible Solutions

  • Tighten Knock Sensor 1 (G61)
  • Check Wiring and Connections
  • Check Knock Sensor 1 (G61) and Knock Control
Special Notes

  • This feature search for unusual (spontaneous) combustion. The sensor detects unusual vibrations and based on that it generates a voltage. Is this voltage outside a certain limit a dtc will be set.
 
To add to that: The fact that your issue is being reported as intermittent, I would guess that a bad wire/connector could be to blame.
 
Yeah, looked at that and its suitably vague but thanks anyways....

I am guessing its the wiring as the loom for sensor 1 comes up through the inlet mani and runs in the trunking alongside the fuel rail.

I am going to have a look over the weekend and test it all with a meter. I might try and 'waggle' the wiring about while the engines running to see if it faults.

Was hoping someone else may have had the problem and found a solution :)

Righty, I have had another look at this and still have no idea what the problem is so I am going to have a go at running new wiring from the offending knock sensor straight back to the ECU.

Does any one have or know where I can get an ECU pin out diagram for a 2001 S3?

Just take the plugs off the ECU and buzz from the knock sensor to the ECU plugs with your meter.

Touch each pin until you get continuity and make notes.

Mine has the G61 knock sensor fault to and has done for sometime, just booked the car in to the local specialist to see if he can sort the problem...

I'll let you know how it goes...
 
This fault was in my car about a year ago, but after a scan today it's back. Firstly, I do use Super Unleaded always so the fuel isn't the problem I hope, although I switched from V-power to Saino's when I moved house in August last year for convenience.

Anyway a few questions:

1. What does it actually mean? I've read the descriptions but they're a bit vague.
2. The car is running fine, so is it worth getting it looked at?
3. What can I check first before I mention it at it's next service/MOT?

I don't have proper VCDS, just the free one.

Have any of you others solved the code and if so, do you have any tips that you could offer?

Wow!... blast from the past lol... one of my first threads this :D

Signal too high means the signal the ECU is seeing is over the threshold set in the map diagnostics suggesting a problem with the sensor....

Worth getting done as the knock sensors do a very important job of controlling timing advance and performance can suffer if this is reading incorrectly

It won't cause a fail on an MOT that I am aware of...

I fixed it by rewiring the sensor back to the ECU... I used some multi core screened cable (from maplins) and cut into the ECU loom at the plug soldering on the new cable in its place... not had the code since...

I would definitely try to get this knock sensor fault rectified, I had this fault repeatedly coming back on my car for a couple of years, even after changing both knock sensors,

I still don't know if this fault contributed to my engine blowing up, It may not of but I still can't help but think it may have. Since I've had my new engine fitted a least 2 years back I've not had this fault come back, and this is using the same knock sensors and wiring.
 
Would the knock sensor cause the vehicle to fire out the intake and no longer start as this has just happend to me while drive home car won't restart and this is the only fault code I have on Vag com
 
Fire out of the inlet? as in a spit back?... spit back is normally where its running lean...

Maybe a hose has popped off but this particular code won't cause the issue you describe

Thanks for the reply tuffty found the problem snapped valve so I have a destroyed cylinder just hope it's not caught the bore :(

Do you know if an APU head is a large port head and suitable for my S3 I'm going to get uprated valves and springs the motors only 5k old :( just hope it's not got the bore
