does anyone know the weight of an 8L S3 in full trim (non sunroof)

im looking to build a stripped out one as a fast road/track car, and im curious as to the starting weight, i think they are about 1500kg, so a touch lighter than a mk4 r32, autotrader info seems to suggest over 1900kg which is rubbish as it will weigh more than my A6 Avant quattro.

Id like to see if the weight can come down to 1250kg (or lighter?) has anyone got one down to that weight(ish)

should see 1250 when stripped out then

excellent, cheers - seems they are about 100kg lighter than mk4 r32 (some of that due to the v6 obviously)

i thought somebody on here had recently decided to properly strip their S3 for a track car project - cant remember who it was now

around 1450 is the typical weight Jason.

For reference, my A3 started out at 1250kg, and after stripping everything and fitting light weight wheels and seats, I actually got this down to 1060kg at one point, but since adding back the cage, fire ext system, ARB's, and other weight safety gear It's gone up to around 1140kg (1133 last weigh in before fire ext).

On that logic, 1250kg should be possible as the S3 has some heavier std equipment than the A3.

cheers mate, ive read your thread and posted up, only decision i might have to make is to buy an S3 or do another mk2 1.8t20v (with a diff this time)

mk2 would be cheaper, god knows what you have laid out on your A3

so anyway ive bought an S3, whether it makes it to a track car is anyones guess, had a bit of work done to it but the turbo is too big and laggy for my liking.

Welcome :)

What's the spec of this S3 you've got? Anything modified at all?

cheers :)

T3 turbo
Scat Rods
boost controller
genesis 550cc injectors
porsche gt2 brakes with 2 piece discs
rs4 alloys
boxed off induction filter
straight through milltek exhaust
forge fmic

probably bits ive missed

Well sounds like you have a good starting point judging by the mods.

Do you have an idea on what it's running and who mapped it?

Try and get some pics up and create a thread I reckon....especially if your even considering tracking it etc.

supposed to be running 350 and did show 420 on the dyno but they backed it off due to fueling, i have a receipt for a very recent dyno session at Storm, who knows if the figures above are true but when the turbo kicks in its fairly quick, just boosts to late for my liking

the s3 front seats weigh 49kg a pice according to my scales that was the non heated version 1250 should be vry achievable my a3 is 1120kg still has carpet and 2 stock 5 door front seats for now

the stock s3 alloys are nearly 12kg a pice ! wich is very heavy for a 17x7.5j the 18s on a r32 are oz and a fair bit lighter i havent weighed one but just to pick up theres a noticeable difference

the s3 has tons of crap it dont need xenons the adjusters on susepension smog pump ac system the interior subwoofer cd changers etc etc the carpet in a A3 S3 is 9 to 10 kgs its really thick high quality stuff so

Forge intercooler (assuming its the normal S3 one they sell) is way too small for 350+ hp... will be quite a pressure drop on that... it won't help your spool for sure...

550cc injectors are ok on a 4bar FPR for 400hp though... miltek is 2.75" mostly... 3" is better for 400hp capable engine... if still running the std S3 inlet and small port you will struggle with a reliable 350-400hp... must be running all the boost in the world to see that power unless the turbo is huge...

<tuffty/>

no idea on some of that, ill wait until my ramp is free and get it up i the air, whip the bumper off and have a look at the fmic, it certainly looks std inlet so i assume its std small port head too.

I want someone to do an s3 properly, so please so that

Lol He's challenging you! ;-)
cheers :)

To build a track based car, that is exactly what you have to do mate ......start out purpose building it as a track car IMO.
Think light everything, someone on here recently has stripped an s3 and started track car proceedings , cut his front bumper up for the big front mount to get as much flow as possible ect...think he was going to weigh it and his is stage 2 iirc.

if/ when I build a track s3 I think I will stick to k04 turbo or hybrid beach buggy k04, a healthy 1200kg fully sorted s3 stage 2 280 bhp will be a good track car. 0-60 of westy's I think is approx 4.6 seconds stage 2 with all the weight in! Stage 2 s3 k04 turbo doesn't have a lot of lag and the power is just there, off the line and mid range, 2nd and 3rd gear gives massive smile as you plant the loud pedal.

Just some food for thought........

sorry but 280hp in 1200kgs is not quick enough, ive just broke an mr2 turbo with 320hp and that weight as it wasnt fast enough, to be honest my plan for buying this car was to rid the laggy turbo have a genuine 350hp running nicely in this car then rip it out and convert an S1 elise with it, so ill then have 350hp and no more than 800kgs in a genuinely excellent chassis

quattro will put the power down better than any mr2, genuine 350 should be great dont forget your suspension, brakes, cage, fluids, ect to suit and JBS designs is the place to talk to about Elise vag 1.8 20v t they built a 450 bhp 800 kilo Elise and its for sale on their website or was for £25,000 iirc

im already on seloc so i know where to get the parts to self build the car, cheers though always helps to have more outlets for things

You know, a focus ST (5pot) weight 1437kg!? I thought they were heavier! Turns out the s3 is a lard ****! Lol.

Is that a 5 door or 3 door ST out of interest?

I had a 3 door st and it certainly didnt feel heavy......... Bet you could strip one down to 1150 kg ish ???!

if you mean mine, i might well of bought the car for the engine and break the rest, having said that once i sort out the turbo you never know

cheers :)

When does the turbo kick in??

he's not far wrong, according to the boost gauge a little bit happens at 4k, then a fair bit more at 5k - so way too late for my liking. Fine if its always having its neck wrung, but for a a fast road car its not good
