War veteran vows to stay at memorial until graffiti is removed

An 89-year-old war veteran has said he will stand at the Bomber Command monument in London's Green Park until spray paint defacing the memorial has been removed.

Douglas Radcliffe MBE, the Secretary of the Bomber Command Association, told ITV News that he was "very disturbed" by the act of vandalism and said he could not understand why anyone would deface the honour.

"I'm standing here until this graffiti is removed"

The 77,000 young men who died, died to give whoever put that graffiti there the freedom to live in this country and honour it, so I can't believe that somebody would do this.
– Douglas Radcliffe MBEUK

The Bomber Command monument in Green Park and the Animals In War memorial were spray-painted overnight. Police are investigating.

Douglas Radcliffe is the Secretary of the Bomber Command Association. He says he's standing at the moment until the graffiti is removed.

He went on to say "I'm very disturbed of course. I can't relate to who's done it."

"If we knew it was going to happen we would have taken some reserve."

Im speechless!!!
WTF goes on in peoples heads,is there no respect for nothing nowadays............

If and when the culprits are found there will be no punishment bad enough imposed.

Absolutely shocking.....

Exactly, bring back of the cat of 9 tails, nobody ever went back for a 2nd time that's for sure.

Its total and utterly a lack of respect mate, whoever did this(and we have no idea of age groups or organisations involved) shouldn't be given the breath we breath!

What i really feel is inappropriate on an open forum.

Hopefully cctv will have been on it, find out what piece of shxt committed this & leave them to the public & see if they do it again.

That is extremely unimpressive. I hope they make the scrote who did that scrub it off in full view off the public. Surely there will be footage of it, but its just a question of can "they" be bothered to track the so-and-so down.

Ugh, makes me sad just thinking there are people out there who think this is cool.

The person or people who did this do not think it's cool. They did it knowing it would p*ss everyone off and have hundreds of people's blood boiling and wasting their energy on it. They're probably sitting at home smiling at the moment.
Don't give them the satisfaction I say.

As soon as people start ignoring stuff like this then these idiots will soon get bored of doing it.

Maybe not across the board, but a lot of them will. They're in it for a reaction, and if they don't get one then they move on.

Yeah, they move on to the next attempt at getting a reaction..... vandalising something else along the way :(

Yes they would maybe move on, to do further/greater damage when no reaction, lets hope not fella, but its not something we can continually ignore is it, ignorance isn't always bliss, this government needs to take tougher stances on people caught causing these types of damage & other things for that matter.

Without trying to raise a possy against an invisible enemy as such, but my grandfather suffered tremendously in war for scum to do this to something that shows a respect for what they gave, I cant ignore that, its a hallowing memory of my grandfathers face when we tried to discuss the war, he refused with a very sad painful face, one I never will forget.

No one said it'd be an instant fix, but the approach of giving them the limelight on every blog, news website, and forum isn't deterring them.

Sometimes you've just got to let a fire burn itself out.

Ads, for evil to triumph it takes good men to do nothing.

Track them down and throw the book at them, regardless of who they are and what human rights they try and claim.

I understand your point, Ads, but I can't agree with it... it just feels like the thin end of the wedge when you turn the other cheek to stuff like this.

I'd rather we not become so blasé about vandalism that it becomes socially acceptable by default due to a lack of reaction. Its bad enough that people are pretty ho-hum about every wall and/or train in sight being covered in the scrawlings of knobs with "no other creative outlet", but ignoring the defacing something that serves as a monument to our past generations' bravery (and a reminder to future generations about the bitter cost of war) just feels wrong, even though I agree that, as you say, it probably just fans the flames as the vandal intended.

So yeah, find 'em and hang 'em out to dry in the court of public opinion.

the thing is by writing the word ISLAM on the memorial several times in block capitals it has caused Muslim leaders to distance themselves from actions like this through fear of reprisals. very counterproductive

Yeah, you're right. Although I think my point is being missed slightly.

When I say to ignore them I don't mean that they should be allowed to get away with it. Yes, the police etc should go after them if they can, and do whatever they need to track them down. But the people who have done this should receive no publicity for it, like they do currently.

I reckon these twits will be a lot less keen doing stuff like this if they only have a criminal record, community service, or jail time to look forward to, rather than the notoriety they will no doubt boast about to their other idiot friends.

So go after them, yes... but deny them all of the "celebrity" that usually goes with it.

Yeah, gotta love it when sh!t-stirrers misdirect and send a hailstorm of unwarranted hate in the direction of some group or another. Muslim leaders are right to distance themselves, because what Muslim in their right mind would think this is a valid way to voice an opinion on anything!

This was obviously the action of a single (or a few) anti-Muslim idiot with the intent of riling people up, but hey, why pin it on the individual when you can use it as an excuse for a counter-attack... amirite!?!
