Audi a3 1.6l sport

Hello there,

Yesterday I put the deposit down on a 2009 audi a3 1.6l sport. I am now having second thoughts and seeking advice.

The car is great I went to see it yesterday and for 8900 the garage are going to service, mot and tax the car. It has 44125 miles. The car drives fantastically well hence why I fell in love with the car. I was just looking for advice on how much extra I can be looking for maintenance costs etc. I currently have a 2006 vw polo 1.2l which I have had for 2 years.

i am just not sure whether to go through with it or not due to additional costs if they are going to be considerably higher. I would imagine I would get similar mpg to my polo as it is only a 1.6 petrol however parts etc may be a huge factor.

Hi,

The parts would cost a bit more from the Polo but not too expensive as far as i am concerned and what i have read in the form. If you like the car and happy with mpg then go for it mate, Audi is a strong car if you look after it she will look after you.

For example recently i changed my timing belt and water pump for my Audi 2.0 TDI (Diesel Parts more expensive) the parts costed me £210 from Audi and £100 labour £310 all together that's not bad.

But it's your decision think through as that's a lot of money.

Well obviously it will be more. Your insurance will be higher and so will car tax. Assume you got some kind of warranty with the car?

Obviously know one knows if you can afford, only you can tell that but if you know the right people then you can get these cars fixed for much better prices than what an Audi Dealer would charge.

my insurance has gone up by only 70 pounds so that's not to bad. Yes that garage have offered me a very good warranty which covers 12000 miles and even covers parts like the clutch etc which is a lot better than any warranty I have had before.

The question to ask 1st is, how much were your maintenance costs for your Polo?

One thing the Audi will do is reward you every time you drive it compared to the Polo. When you are at the lights and you look across to see some chav in Citroen saxo revving his 1 litre up, that's when you'll love the Audi.
One thing to warn you about though is if you hang around on this forum you will catch the modding bug. Some mods are cheap and some are marriage breaking expensive, take it from someone waiting for delivery of his BE rotors lol!!

Yes I mean bits for my car. I would tell you but you might out bid me 😉l.
My latest mod was wire brushing my callipers and painting them. I'm waiting for some audi decals to put on them. I had to do something for when the rotors go on.

I was probably in a similar boat as yourself ChrisLayton9. I had a Fiesta 1.2 and although it was fine for City, I wanted to upgrade to something better. Audi seemed very good choice in terms of space and quality and I couldn't be more pleased with the purchase. I've got an 07 1.6 with just around 64K on the clock. I was expecting bad fuel economy but I was amazed to see results. In terms of maintenance it would be slightly expensive of course but then you have to decide what do you want? Driving Pleasure or Save money?

I can second that. I started doing it but whatever I touched needed something additional so I've to hold myself back for now

I've had a 1.6 for a bit over a year - 2005 55 Sport 1.6FSI. The first thing is - there are two Petrol 1.6s and a Diesel, so you might want to figure out which you have - that might also help to get some more detailed comments. I have had to have both rear discs (some folk on here use the American term rotors) and a wheel bearing at a cost of £400 - I needed two new tyres - I bought Michelins and got the pair fitted and balanced for £175. The FSI engine I have doesn't have a cambelt - it's a chain and that doesn't have a change specified, although mine was done under warranty before I owned it because of the "rattle of death" - which I still get occasionally - but I think the "other" 1.6 does have a cam belt.

I also need an exhaust now. Of course all this stuff is normal car stuff but I'm a bit dischuffed I've copped for it all in the first year, I also needed to change the rear wiper motor because of the crap design issue (if you do a search you'll this happens a lot). Of course all this happened after the end of my 3 months warranty, but my car had a full (mostly Audi) history and 60K when I bought it. Other than that it's had routine servicing as required.

I have looked around and the mpg seems set at 39 combined for the car, is this a realistic figure or would it be considerably less? I dont really do a lot of town which should help. However I have found with my VW i dont get 48.7 which VW said, not sure if this is due to the car being 7 years old?

I don't think you would get 48.7 with that, forget what VW would say. 39 is very good, i get that with my 2.0tdi.

Yeah I would be happy if I can get anywhere near 39 mpg out of it as the car is a petrol and weighs a lot more than the polo did.

That's some bad experience there mate. If there is some consolation, the wiper issue has happened to me as well but I got a relatively new motor for £40 so not too bad.

To be perfectly honest, I haven't really calculated the mpg as such, only because I've had the car for a month and a half and I've only driven it around 600mls (Don't ask why I bought it ). However, I've managed 360+ in complete city driving and I haven't hit reserve yet (nearly there). I only ever got 310-320 mark in my Fiesta. Even though the tank is larger, I am pleased with it since the engine is bigger too.

To avoid any surprise costs, I would personally take it straight to Audi and get it checked completely. If there is something they have fobbed you off, it will come up. Even though they are doing the service for you, I would be a bit wary of what they are doing but I guess that's just me because of my experiences with other garages. I wouldn't recommend going for those "free health check" garages. That's a trap imo.

How many miles do you do in a month? There will surely be a difference in costs of filling up the tank but as I said earlier, take a pick:
1. Pleasure = Audi
2. save Costs = Polo

Yes, i guess the only way to really find out is to test it myself.

The garage seemed to think i would get similar out of it (load of rubbish i know)

I dont do to many miles a month roughly around 700.

so hopefully i can get that out of 2 tanks of petrol. We shall see.

As long as you don't drive like a kid, I'm pretty sure you will get that in around 1 + 3/4 tank of fuel
