Hi guys,
just wanted to check if anyone has come across this before, bought this 2006 A3 Quattro DSG with a misfiring fault, apparently the previous owners had this problem, got the chains and tensioners changed and gave up. Fault code was incorrectly correlation with cam and crank, when I looked at the measuring blocks I found that the inlet cam timing was 40 degrees out, so stripped it down and not surprised to find the inlet cam was not lining up. When I further investigated the inlet cam could be move an 1/8th or a turn while the chain was still holding the sprocket.
Taken both the camshaft adjusters off and the inlet one can be moved, yet the exhaust one does have some play but only about 0.5mm
see pics below of the cam adjusters with the insides turned fully anticlockwise, marked (pic 1) and then turned fully clockwise, you can see that the inlet cam adjuster on the left has CONSIDERABLY more movement (pic 2).
Has anyone come across this before? Doesn't seem normal to me.....
If my understanding is correct the cam adjusters should lock in place and when oil is injected this would unlock and vary the timing.
p.s. strainer for valve adjustment body was clogged and torn.
thanks in advance.
