I have a new 8V with the MMI navigation package and Audi Sound System. I quickly discovered it can handle M4A encoded audio files straight out of iTunes on an SD card. Playback has been flawless, but I'm having a problem with artwork.

All my music is *meticulously* organized in a \artist\album layout, and I have placed a folder.jpg inside each album folder together with the individual music tracks. But, some album artwork shows on the MMI display, while other albums just show the generic music notes icon. At first, I thought it might be X-Y size issue, so I checked a few of the jpg's because the X and Y pixel counts are not the same for every image. Most are around 500 pixels on a side, some are larger and some are smaller. Even one which was 400x400 pixels does not show, while one that is 500x500 pixels does. Does anyone know what restriction, if any, there are for these files? Is it a filesize limit? How can I get the artwork to show for all my albums?

There's a few threads on this already. If you do a quick search, it should come up with the goods.

Artwork has to be embedded - there's a utility called mp3tag (I think) which will do the trick.

Thanks, I'll look into it, but I don't think any of my M4A's currently have embedded artwork (I don't believe iTunes embeds the artwork, it's saved in the database if I remember correctly). These are NOT tracks purchased from Apple, they are encoded by iTunes from ripped WAV files that I get from ripping software. The album artwork (folder.jpg's) is downloaded using a tool called Album Art Downloader. The fact that some artwork works, seems to indicate that my feeling is correct and the artwork is not embedded but read directly from the jpg.

Just out of interest my demo car read the tags on the MMI from an SD card every time but the DIS was intermittent for the same track on different trips.

I'm still no closer to solving this. Mp3tag does not seem to be working correctly with these m4a files, because it does not show any tags... even artist/album is empty. So I loaded up some albums in foobar2000, and I found that at least the first two albums I checked had embedded artwork. One of these two albums shows artwork on MMI and the other doesn't. So I exported the artwork and checked the size. The one that worked was 300x300 pixels, and the one that did not work was 953x953 pixels. Since I'm still not convinced the artwork has to be embedded, I removed the artwork from all tracks of both albums. I kept the folder.jpg in each folder, assuming that if the player looks for embedded artwork and finds it empty, it will fallback to looking for the folder.jpg. Now, after removing the embedded artwork, it's still the same... the first album show artwork while the second one does not. I've also tried resizing the bigger artwork down to 300x300 pixels and still nothing.

I need to sleep on this and try to figure out what to try next...
