Anyone done this swap? I'm interested in fitting a complete AMK engine into a 1998 A3 1.8t, I'm aware I'll need to use the 5speed box etc. as it's fwd.

Any ideas on the engine loom differences? Any other potential issues?

Technically it will fit but... AMK comes with stuff the AGU knows nothing about... all the wiring will be different, ECU, clocks etc... AMK comes with VVT and wideband lambda plus DBW not cable throttle like you have now...

There is no advantages to doing a straight engine swap unless yours is knackered but the turbo/manifold etc is a popular swap... you will need other stuff though as wideband engine stuff is not compatible with the old ME3.8

Doing a full transplant would be quite a task and fully dependant on your definition on "Got everything from the donor car to swap over." there are a lot of things to consider as the cars became more complicated electrically in later years and are so tied in together that you would essentially be doing a reshell

Appreciate that thanks, it's actually for a friends car. he isn't interested in swapping his car for an S3 etc. due to his love for this particular A3 so I'm trying to help him do it the hard way!

It will be the hard way for sure lol...

Easiest way is just to fit the K04 and the bits needed to do this... this is by far the easiest way to do it...
