Expected Mpg 07 2.0Tdi 170 S line sport back DSG

Hi All,

I was wondering if members could post their real world MPG figures so I can compare to my wife's 2007 SB 170 DSG 48k miles F.Audi Service History

It's a great car but with a 60% motorway 40% urban mix of driving it only get 430miles to a tank.

Some things that may be contributing:

The G450 sensor fault has been coming up for the last few weeks(tempted to just replace it)

Only one active regen on DPF in last two years but the car idles at 900rpm which seems higher than before the mechatronics unit was replaced.

Lately it takes 25 mins to get up to 90 degrees and coolant light comes on from cold starts only despite no drop in coolant(may have clean two pronged sensor or replace whole tank)

It's a fantastic car that I nearly enjoy driving more than my 07 R32! only gripe is I feel the mpg should be better

I'm getting 500miles from a tank and that's hardly doing any motorway miles at all. That's an 2009 170 Manual though.

I have a 3 door and I get 530-600 miles out of a full tank depending on how much town driving i do. All other driving is 60/70 on lanes and motorways to and from work.

I have a 2006 170 manual with stage 1 remap. If I'm doing a long motorway run (usually Swansea to Carlisle and vice versa) I can easily hit 50mpg, sometimes 55mpg if I'm especially careful (that's religiously sticking to 65-75mph - anything over 80mph and my MPG drops away rapidly).... One the flip side if I'm doing 100% town driving with lots of short, stop/start journeys (with the odd fast acceleration ) I can drop as low as 30mpg average over the tank full. Quite a big swing

I think that roughly works out around 650+ miles per tank on 100% motorway driving, but as low as 350 miles per tank on 100% city driving. I find your driving style has a massive impact on consumption too, more so with this car than others I've owned


I'm no expert, but if you really are doing as much as 60% motorway driving, then ye, I'd expect a better return than 430 miles. Probably around the 500 mile mark. Unless your missus drives like Susie Wolff?

LOL, she mainly just goes to work at a steady 60-70mph on motorway so I'll start looking at ways to improve MPG, DPF delete being the obvious choice.

Personally I'd sort the two known faults first. At least you'd eliminate those from any other fault finding.

Wouldn't do a huge amount of bumper to bumper city driving.

About 35-40% urban driving to local shops etc

No idea, but I'd imagine ecu must factor the dpf sensors into its calculations surely, and posisbly revert to a compromise alternative map to bypass fault codes.

Same with your coolant temp - the ecu will probably use different fuelling if it thinks the engine is cold (assuming the sensor is at fault and not the instrument gauge).

I'm happy for someone to tell me differently.

Also many factors affect fuel consumption - driving style, tyres, tyre pressures, etc etc

I cleaned the two temperature sensor prongs in the coolant last night and the coolant warning didn't come on this morning from a cold start so that is positive.

Gonna order the G450 dpf sensor and swap it over and adapt and let's see what difference that my have

My 2.0TFSI petrol Quattro S-Tronic is about 380 miles per tank. 70% 50/60 mph B roads and 30% town driving.

DIS showed 47.3 mpg on wife's drive from work to home(80% Motorway) seems to be up from 42/43mpg it had been showing lately.

Is it wishful thinking that cleaning the sensors in the coolant tank and not having the coolant warning light come on from cold start have helped the Mpg?

47mpg on motorways is good. I usually get more like 43- when doing 70+mph

I was getting between 40-45mpg going to work in a morning, slight incline most of the way and hard-ish acceleration needed to come onto a busy roundabout then a dual carriage way, I now take a different turning to avoid that roundabout altogether, its the same distance and takes the same amount of time but as I can keep a fairly consistent speed on the new route I get a touch over 50mpg now

my route home the very same way is a slight decline almost all the way and gets me 66mpg without fail, I drive to work before 7am and drive home before 4pm

as a result, around 570-600 per tank, tho it's a 2.0 tdi140

wife's return trip from work just got 48.3mpg on DIS and she said she was driving quick enough on motorway so that's definitely an improvement.

not necessarily, like I said in my previous post, driving style plays a part, the roads you use, the amount of traffic, on motorways AND in towns

True, but I don't think I can go a full tank without putting my tie down

Other than what's already been mentioned above, the outside temperature affects the MPG too... when it's colder the MPG drops.
Oh and... tyre pressure - stating the obvious.
I'm not sure how much I get from a full tank lately since I fill up randomly when I see 'cheap' diesel prices... hehe. Anyway I log all my fill ups on an App called 'Mileage'.
According to the DIS I average around 45 MPG and that is pretty much combining all the different driving styles and conditions.

Also anyone know if using the turbo/boost alot reduces MPG? Can't quite put my finger on this one.

Edit: The DSGs has lower quoted MPG compared to non DSG models. As is with Quattros.

I've only had my 170 SB DSG for a couple of weeks, it's a 2010.

DIS says 520 miles range on fill up and first tank driving in D mode I saw about 440 miles and filled up with the DIS saying I had 55 miles remaining.

Second tank I drove in manual and filled up after 460 miles by which point light had been on a while and DIS said I only had 15 miles remaining.

I probably do 60%ish of my driving on motorway and the majority of the rest on fairly free flowing A and B roads, and rarely sit in traffic. Although on motorway I find myself sitting in the fast lane and probably at a constant speed that could be more efficient if I dropped back a little, although I certainly don't thrash around when I'm on A roads etc. It's hard to quantify MPG I think as everyone will drive differently.

I'd have liked to hit 500 miles to a tank with my normal driving style, but hey ho!

I have a remapped and dpf removed 170 quattro and get on average 500 miles to a tank, thats mixed major A road and back lane driving..

Thats somewhere in the region of 40 mpg... On a long motorway journey I will get 600-650+ to a tank

not sure there's ever a completely accurate way of measuring it unless you're sure your car's computers are 100% accurate and that when your car says you've travelled an exact mile, you actually have!

When my car was as low in fuel as I dared to let it get, the trip computer said I'd done 603 miles since filling it up and an indicated 55.3mpg over that 603 miles

however, When I refilled after this, it topped at 55.86 Litres which is obviously the EXACT amount it used over the 603 miles, which actually works out at 49.07mpg

ur about the same as me. I struggle to reach above 35mpg in town. If i hammer it its always around the 30 mark. The most i've ever seen is a tad under 50 after a motorway journey.
