Very much appreciated and I think that AMD would be very proud of that compliment as well as they did all of the donkey work.

I just had the idea and they made it happen.

It's in tomorrow for a bit of damper adjustment.

I'd like to think it sits better on the Supersports as the sidewalks are slightly beveled compared to the R888s and the fit is better.

No.

There is unfortunately no front camber adjustment although the TTRS TCAs may allow you to get some without having to do what I did!

What I wanted was a LOT more adjustment and grip and this was the only way of getting all of that and being able to adjust or set it up properly.

Currently it's a bit bouncy so its in for the bump/rebound and ride height to be adjusted a bit.

It's not been a cheap solution but being able to do this with a pretty costly hatch and retain the everyday usability is quite a result.

I'm still finding the limits of the Supersports which I'd recommend to anyone looking for an amazing all round tyre.

So.....as below,a pleasant hour or two spent at my favourite watering hole this morning.

AMD have adjusted the bump and rebound on the dampers,and cured an annoying bounce on high speed bumps,and also cured a couple of minor water leaks into the bargain.

Car feels better,holds the road more securely,and doesn't feel like it's floating over a series of bumps.

Good result,and thanks again!

I've had a car with Quaife torque vectoring diffs before,and it's traction and grip levels were amazing.

Right now,with an open diff,the car will squirm under hard acceleration,and if you use the TC,it will cut in anywhere up to 4th gear,so this should help in ironing that out.

It's funny how whenever you improve one area of a car radically,then another which was there but less obvious,can become the main issue.

I've only ever used them on 4WD cars(the last being a GpN Escort Cosworth),but the feedback I've had re FWD cars is much the same.

Excellent at dragging out the last bit of traction under difficult conditions,but may take a bit of getting used to,as there is a bit of a tendency to snatch when it picks up grip,and this was one of the criticisms of the first gen RS Turbo Focus,which could be very snappy,although later versions of the diffs are less aggressive.

Used to run one in my rally Golf many moons ago. Fantastic increase in traction, especially slower corners where you would normally spin an inside wheel. Might need a bit of adjustment in suspension set up though, as it will improve the front end grip so much, the rear may not want to go with it! I believe that the 'slippage' can be altered by changing the gear helix angles, but obviously that would mean a total strip down and rebuild (not sure that the gears would be available from Quaife anyway). Torque steer used to be dreadful, but that was before power steering was the norm. Sure you will enjoy the difference.

My experience on the Escort was different to an extent as it had 4WD,but what you noticed was almost irrespective of the road conditions,you would get traction.
The entire car was very snappy when it got near to the limits,as you'd expect,but amazingly quick thanks to ALS,and a very short ratio 'box(about 20mph/1000 rpm).

The Quaife diff has fixed setup as far as I'm aware,but for road use,there's no way you'd be altering it,and hopefully with the suspension setup I have now,we can iron out any changes fairly rapidly.
 
Had a very useful and rewarding chat with Owen Developments today.





Looks like one of these will be ideal for the next bit of work.....




The map puts the likely power right in the middle of the range,so unlike the current 3071,it will be well below it's maximum speeds,and capable of big boost levels,without excessive temps,AND,thanks to all the other good bits on this turbo,it should spool easily as quick as my current one.


This isn't quite the right map for comparison,as mine has a different A/r turbine,but is still decent for comparing the compressor maps.....





This goes onto the list of stuff for the worklist,and should available for July.

LOL...someone must have been really surprised when he tried that out!

My friends over on VAGOC have been persuading me to think about getting the head and intake manifold sorted as well,so the list is ever increasing at the moment,and due to time constraints and cash flow it may end up being done in stages.

The diff and turbo are booked though.
 
Lots of very helpful chats with Owen Dev's over the last few days,and with Revo today.

The advice from Revo is to go with a billet wheel GTX3076,and Owen recommend the 3576,but the other side of that is the quicker spool on the 3076,and as I can't reasonably get beyond it's map,this looks like being the one I'll go for.

Looking at the 3576 and 3076 maps,both will run to around 600bhp comfortably,so I may finally be able to make my mind up and order the thing.

a common misconception with the GTX range, is that they spool quicker than their normal GT counter parts. They don't. it will be nothing like your gt3071

I can only go with what Owen Developments and a few GTX users have told me.

Owen build and supply a lot of race turbos inc for the BTCC and the people I know who've used their GTX turbos have given similar feedback re spool times at given to rpms.

Mine will have a billet wheel as well.....
In any case the proof will be on the road but its also clear that the 3071 is maxed out.

I will obviously feed back when the work is done but feedback from trusted sources helps a lot also.
 
There's no replacement for displacement. Apart from forced induction, apparently.

Lets hope so!

I trust what Owen have told me but equally the info from some people I know who are already using a similar setup and also the advice from Revo.

It's going to be a GTX3076 with ported shroud,steel bearing cage,and maybe ceramic coated,all of which should add up to a starightforward 550bhp,without either exploring the limits of fuelling,or ragging anything else in the process.


Now I just have to go and buy the thing,and give Steve at AMD the bad news for digging out the current turbo!

I sometimes feel that way if its too early in the morning on a wet road!

Anyhow.....

The GTX is on order now along with the diff and the car is booked in.

The diff should cure the way it squirms under full throttle and the bigger turbo should be fun.
I'm not trying for any silly bhp increases but a touch more torque and maybe 550ish bhp would be about as far as its possible to go with the current manifold and fuel setup.

That still leaves room for a few more ideas.

I wasn't going to do any of this to the car when I bought it but so many people were remapping their cars and getting much more fun out of the car that I did the same.

It turned into a slippery slope....LOL.

What I wanted then and still want is an everyday driver that's both fast and reliable.
This is pretty close to being just right but still has room for a few more ideas.

It's awful....seeing it makes you want it.

The fun factor when you put you're right foot down must 100% be worth it all though.

I keep meaning to but never get around to it.

The fun factor is worth every penny especially compared to more expensive and often slower super cars.

you couldve had the gtx 76mm billet wheel added to your current turbo, do you know that?
just a different comp wheel and slightly more machined cover. Everything else is the same.
Would be cost effective thats all

This will have different aspect ratios,and a ported shroud plus I have plans for the old one,so this is the best option here.

P.S....your car should be pretty mean once it's all going.

Very nice list and parts.

Seriously though,the help I've had from people like Jonny and others in encouraging me to do this,plus his experience of the various turbo options available has been very useful.

AMDTuning and I hadn't done an S3 8P to this sort of level previously,so I think I've treated it not only as a great experience,but a learning opportunity as well.
They've built engines,raced cars,and know how to solve the problems that I keep coming up with,but every bit of extra information saves you finding out for yourself the things that don't work.

Owen Developments and Scott Hawkins in particular have been fantastic.
I honestly could not hope to have had more free advice,help and knowledge put into something which for them,cannot be a big project,and for that,I can only recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone else looking for a good big turbo,with some extras.

These guys are superb.

AGREED, Owen developments looks tremendous,and I must say AMD have done a SUPERB job on your car, I also have a great deal of respect for "Mr Cocker", I actually bought some of the std stuff from his white s3 a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time ago which was also a GREAT Car as is his TTRS (anyone who hasnt read his build thread over on vagoc really should as it is INSANE)but this takes any s3 build thread to another level Alex, seriously m8, fantastic thread, well done :beerchug:

So far,it's been great fun,and I hope it continues like this.

Jonny did some great work on the S3,and gave a few of us the right sort of place and level to aim for,and then go beyond,as Dan had done with Jonny's old car.
I can't use or really have a place for an R8,so pushing this is a good project,and with the bottom end of the engine built,it's safe enough to go for a bit more.

I've always had engines built and tuned incrementally rather than going for the maximum right away,so that you have a chance to find problems before they become too big.

The other thing I've learnt is to use tuners who build and/or race cars,as the expertise and attention to detail is so much better than many others,and they know where to look when something isn't quite right.
A good example of that was when the plastic top of the HPFP cracked a coupe of years back...AMD knew exactly what it was,and I doubt I would even have seen it.

One of the great things about this forum and VAGOC,is that if you ask,or mention you're doing something,loads of people will come along with very useful and helpful advice(and I'm NOT taking the p***,I actually mean it).

It does mean however that your original list of things starts to stretch out into a whole new build list.

My summer project now stands at:

Quaife LSD.
GTX3076 turbo.
Rear brakes and pads.

But after a few more suggestions the following are on the menu:

Induction manifold.....this was always on the cards but may get moved up.
Head work(valvegear and porting/flow).

Swap current WMI injector for larger.

Only good bit of news there is the engine doesn't need to come out as the pistons are 9.2:1 CR so no need to alter that.

And...it needs an MOT.
