You sure it's the alternator pulley?
To remove/replace the ribbed-belt is pretty easy, with a spanner and an old drill bit you can lock the tensioner back. The alternator pulley is held on with a big bolt. Seems a pretty easy job to DIY.
When my aux/v/ribbed belt was screeching it was in fact a seized aircon compressor & aircon clutch/pulley which ended up costing me over £1500 at the Audi garage.
And is a common problem ...
Assuming you have aircon / climate control ...
If it's actually a seized aircon clutch the garage is replacing then they're getting on for £100-£150+ for an OE part.
I'd make sure the garage has diagnosed it properly, it would seem expensive to replace the alternator pulley.
You can test yourself ... does the aircon disengage when you press the econ button?
If the screeching goes away when you press the econ button and comes back when you turn aircon back on I think it's the aircon compressor.
If the aircon doesn't disengage when you set the econ mode, then it's your aircon compressor clutch. Maybe.
Or if that all works as it should, I have no clue and you can ignore me. :icon_thumright:

If it the clutch type pulley you would need a special tool (shockingly!) to remove it... the pullies are fairly cheap...

Hi thanks,i have tested and wen i turn on the air con on the climate control.(the temp on the lowest possible the noise goes away)only came back wen i switch off the air con.just noticed that wen turning the steering wheel it makes more noise,but if i accelerate above 1000 rpm it goes away,now i am confused.
That does sound very much like an alternator pulley issue. It doesn't do it when you have the a/c on as you're putting extra load on the belt, or above 1000rpm as you're taking the inherent harsh diesel idle away. This issue only really becomes apparent on the Tdi as it makes the steering judder and 'chirp' if at idle speeds, because the 1.8t is a smoother engine it doesn't get affected with the issue even though the pulley does seize up just as commonly.
Its easy to change, and can even be done without removing the alternator if you use the special tool. Another option would be for you to remove the alternator yourself and take it in to a local garage and ask them to fit the new pulley for you, they'd probably only charge you £20 or so.
